After a year of being unemployed, I was finally hired in November. At my last resort, Mcdonalds. Less than minimum wage, full time, pretty rubbish hours.

I was mildly surprised at what I found. The percieved notion of Mcdonalds is totally false; everything is taken very seriously, from quality to speed to cleanliness. It wasn't a doss, it was fucking hard work. A lot of people can't hack it & leave. Although it can be stressful, you're surrounded by (mostly) good people all day, you have a good laugh every day.

Although I was pretty terrible at first, and generally looked down on (I was the only new starter), after I came out of my shell a bit I got a bit more competent. When more new starters came in, I remembered what it was like and helped them out, and one of the managers mentioned being promoted to crew trainer; a step up from crew member & a lot below manager. It was an extra pound an hour that I desperately needed, and I pushed myself to improve, I learned every job in the store, stayed late every day, became the best mother fucking kitchen worker in that store. It may seem like just making burgers, but I am fucking good at making those burgers. I am as fast on grill as 3 crew members. Managers starting taking notice, I started running kitchen, I ran it during a £1000 sales hour easymode.

Again to my surprise, I didn't just enjoy going in to work, I fucking loved it. Everyone likes and respects me; even though I wasn't their boss the crew did what I said. There are some managers who have trouble getting respect, but they fucking do what I say. I feel bad sometimes and dislike some aspects of myself when I'm there; twice I've lost my rag and properly shouted at people, my friends as well.

Anyway, long story short I'm not being made crew trainer. I was told today I'm being made a Manager.

And I'm really, really fucking happy. Some of my friends kind of laughed a bit, and I tried to explain to them what a big deal it is, how much responsibility it is, how much pressure, how much work. It's a business and the success of that business is partly in my hands. It's a little intimidating that tomorrow when I turn up I have a staff that I am in charge of. And I really can't wait.

Anyway yeah I had to write a blog because I'm really happy! I never have to go pick up trash around the store again!

Great blog, love your attitude, and makes me happy that that you're happy

I've been in a similar situation as you, so I can relate. After quitting a job in IT many years ago, and finding myself desperately in need of a job, I worked for a couple months at a large chain supermarket, at the deli counter. The work was much harder than I expected, and in being able to persevere through it, it instilled in me a kind of pride that made me work even harder. Glad to see that your hard work has paid off.

5/5. I can imagine working at MCD would be very tough. You can come and work at mine though

I believe that the local MCD here in California was rated as one of the cleanest in the state. But dont take my word for it, I cant remember where or who told me that. :/

5/5! The only 'fast food'-type place that I worked at was Cinnabon, which was a fucking nightmare.

My girlfriend recently got a job at Burger King as well, and even though nobody ever really looks at that job with much praise, it's not exactly all that easy. And her promotion to supervisor is effective August 8th, which comes with $1,200 spending money for 3 months of training in Tennessee (hotel, travel, food paid for) in which she will make about another $3,000 before returning and making $10.04 starting off.

She actually works with 200% effort compared to everyone else in the restaurant, which makes me so happy to see that her work is paying off. I never really thought becoming a manager/supervisor for a fast food chain would be so neat.

What made you think that it wasn't professional. Mcdonalds has very strict quality control and guidelines. Atleast thats how I see it. Atleast thats how I view mcdonalds. What would make you think mcdonalds is not a serious professional business?

Allso, how can you make 'less than minimum wage' ?

Everyone always asks me whether it's true we spit in burgers, people snort when we say we use 100% beef or free range chickens, I've seen facebook groups about 'McSpastics'...obviously it's all ignorance but I would definitely say people generally under rate our standards.

And I am under 21 so my minimum wage is a pound less (or something near). Since it's a ridiculous law I just say less than minimum wage instead of minimum wage for my age group.

Thanks everyone for nice comments <3 ^^

I love your attitude. If you're gonna do it, do it right. I've heard many stories of fast promotions working in chain stores.

My friend worked at Panda Express with a 20 year old manager (I think, or maybe it was a position below it). Hot lesbian Vietnamese chick, lol.

Great job man. The most important thing about any job is the people that you work with. Any job will be awful if everyone there is a dick and you don't like them. Equally the worst jobs can be made fun just because the guys there are awesome and you have a laugh. Sounds like your doing well. Having managment experience is gonna look great on your C.V. experience is way more important that qualifications (at least in England) right now.

Really cool to read, especially since I'm pretty sure I'd end up being more apathetic about the work if I was in your shoes. Your level of work ethic and enthusiasm is impressive and something to aspire to, congratulations.

Congratulations and all the best for your new position!

But yeah despite the stereotype, I have heard from many people that McDonalds are actually very good employers and it's really meritocratic. If you work hard and become good at it, you'll get promoted really fast.

Nice job getting the promotion! :O

Yeah, lots of people blow it off as minor stuff when--although it may not require a bachelor's/master's education--it's really quite hard work.

gj, i dont know where this perceived notion of mc donalds being dirty comes from, mc donalds has to ensure that they have good enough quality, it is bad reputation if they get sued etc. although some of their food making processes can always be criticized as with nearly all fast food chains

having managerial experience is always a plus

That's awesome! :D I started working at a major retail clothing store in Feb and worked my ass off... now I'm the assistant manager! <3 I love it! It's great while I'm in college, and yes, managerial experience is wonderful for your resume. Good luck!
