I can't be professional here. As a fan it's difficult to be.

But to be honest it's a very very exciting time to be a foreign StarCraft fan. Let's compare it to what it was like even in the twilight of Brood War.

Remember when IdrA was in Korea? Remember when he was our last white hope? Well look at us now! We ship foreigners by the truckload to Korea! ThorZaIN, NaNiwa, the Liquid guys, FXO, Fenix, SaSe. Anyone with enough heart, practice and hard work on a decent team can land a spot in Korea. Back then you had to win a tournament and shit. The only one they had. Like ever.

Remember back when you had to watch StarCraft (or StarCraft 2) on Korean hours? Now not only do you have the option to pay for GOOD Korean VODs but StarCraft is on ALL THE TIME. IPL and NASL? They're fucking available on Eastern Time Primetime. What? Those aren't on? Tune into live IPL TV. Or listen to two whole hours of Inside The Game/ State of the Game coverage at a time. For free. Don't feel like that? Watch Go4SC2. Or a KOTH. Or any of the small tournaments going on. Not in the mood? Check out TL's streams, which has been topping out at a whopping 100 streams.

Remember TSL2? Remember how exciting it was to have a $10000 prize to the victor? That's so much money...

Oh wait, it's StarCraft 2 now. It's gotten to the point where players can make more than people with regular jobs now. Holy shit HuK pocketed almost $20000 in two consecutive weekends. PuMa took home $50000 after storming NASL. Winning ANY GSL will put you like $80000 in the black.

Our pro players have Twitters like celebrities do. And Facebook Fan Pages. We can live StarCraft 24/7, and thanks to player salaries and massive prize pools, so can the players.

Did I mention Liquipedia? We have a massive staff, and you can fucking read about anyone. Anytime.

I never would have dreamed of a scene like this a year ago. I doubt many others would have either.

And the game is still young. Heart of the Swarm. Legacy of the Void. New players (of incredible skill) are popping up each and every day. The best is yet to come.

Happy birthday, StarCraft II.

As someone who lives on the east coast, and therefore could only watch proleague matches two or three days a week if I didn't want to break my sleep schedule, it was difficult to follow starcraft. You had to wait a few days for vods to appear, in korean.

Now, any day of the week during primetime, I can watch live starcraft during primetime in some form, and I have multiple choices.

The scene has definitely grown, and it's not done growing yet. There's been a few growing pains (especially lately), but it seems to be heading in the right direction.

I knew none of this as we are in no way close geographically or in terms of friendship.

Yes. I've never met you outside of teamliquid, and you definitely are not responsible for me playing starcraft in any way.

The news for SC2 is much much better

Although I don't play SC2, it is interesting to see SC2 finally catching up to other large games. Prize money and event coverage still has some ways to go to catch up to some of the biggest at their peaks, but it is getting there. Always fun to see.
