The masters buddy I practice with and who coaches me said something today that I'm a little confused by. He said that playing against people playing ridiculous non-standard builds will help you improve better than playing against people who are playing standard builds and trying to actually win.

If this is true, how does this work?

I ask because most of my ladder matches lately are versus people playing some sort of 1-2 base all-in or ridiculous cheese strategy....and I've been winning most of them because they're, simply, just bad. They're bad builds played by plat-level players, which makes them double-bad.

All my losses lately have been vs people who just play a safe, standard build and execute it as well as they can (as a plat level player).

So, my question is, if I can beat cheese, but I can't beat normal play, where does that leave me?

Oh, got an auto-uploader from my replays, so they're all available here:

http://www.sc-replay.com/player/72749-Xanthus.html

And my stream, is still here:

http://www.justin.tv/Reithan

Still looking for more friends to practice and play with. If you're interested, send me a message here on TL, or in game anytime! See you in game!

You didn't ask him how it is better or in what way does it help you improve.
All forms of practice are aimed to improve something, the question is: What does it help you improve, in what aspect of the game?

I'd assume he was alluding to your improved crisis management skills from responding to unexpected builds would carry over into a "standard" game, improving your ability to respond to normal builds with higher composure and efficiency.

However you should just ask him what he meant instead of asking us. We don't know him or what he was saying.

Play against your friends and have them flip a coin for cheesy build or standard build.

You basically have to be more active in your scouting, and think about the builds you want to use when you suspect cheese or eco cheese may be coming.

Makes you adapt your game based on what you are seeing.

Also, if you're plat you just need to learn how to macro better too....

Sorry, I should have specified, we were talking about drone timing, mainly.

If this were true, people at the top of the NA ladder would be dominating GSL's.
During practice session, I discovered very good build against zerg. -Bisu[Shield]

If he was talking about drone timing, he probably means that playing against non-standard builds will force you to make judgements about when it is safe to drone based on scouting, instead of just blindly making drones based off assumptions from when it's safe vs standard builds.
