Cops, lately, have been major dicks. I don't know what the hell I did to piss them off, but it certainly worked. I feel like they're targeting me directly -_-.
For the past 2 years, my car has had tinted windows. Nothing major. Just 20%. You can practically see through them, but not at night. It doesn't really matter if they can see through at night because I usually drive with my windows down. I prefer that over the A/C while driving.
In the past 2 weeks, I've gotten 3 fucking tickets for my tint. I know most of you are going to say stupid bullshit like "But it's illegal!" I know that. Quit your fucking preaching and shut the fuck up. Every single time I've gotten a ticket, I was driving with my windows down and when I got pulled over (for no reason mind you), I got asked to pull up the window a bit.
What the fuck difference does it make to the officer if I have tints or not in that situation? It's fucking pissing me off now. If my windows were up, I say it's fair game. I don't care. But when my windows are down, what the fuck? -_- Other than these stupid tickets, my driving record is clean... /sigh
There's one thing I don't understand though. Why is front tint illegal in most states, but those decals that trucks usually put on the back windshield not? At least, the officer can see through my tint. Those decals on the back are damn impossible to see through, but those are legal? Makes no sense IMO, but whatever.
And something funny I found while researching tint laws and stuff:
Anyone know what the IC Code is for window tint is? And did I miss the memo somewhere, because I've been hearing a few friends of mine talking about how much this is being enforced during the summer? We were talking about it at work the other day, if nothing else I was thinking it's one of those fun stopping charges when you want/need one for a vehicle. Personally sounds like a day shifts version of the "plate light violation", IMO.
LOL @ a cop admitting that tint stops are pretty much bullshit and "fun stopping charges."

I believe here in Texas that if you receive proof that your car has the tint removed, the ticket will be dismissed. I just drive with sunglasses on, partly because i can't afford tint lol.
|
Pretty annoying that Cops do stupid crap like that just to fill their quota. I feel like if they wanted they could ticket anyone at almost anytime for some stupid violation that the driver would have no way of knowing it even existed.
|
Thats a bummer man. I have a 335i Coupe with HEAVY tints (you can barely see through them during the day) and have not been pulled over for them yet. Hopefully I stay lucky! Btw, how much does the ticket cost ?

Awesome car . I don't trust myself with that much power and couldn't afford it 2 years ago either . 325xi here.
Tint tickets vary by municipality here in NJ. They're usually $54 for the most part. I know some municipalities charge $75 or so.

I realize it's stupid. But it is the law, and you did break it. I don't see why you think you should be above it.
|
Just don't tint the fucking window? There's a law, just follow it. It's for the general safety of everyone to NOT have tinted windows

you're still breaking the law, though in your situation i'd say "sorry sir, fuse is blown can't roll the window up"
also, the rear window can be completely blocked/nonexistent - it's optional, and not required to drive

@ Joementum
Your decision seems rash. Consider this legal advice that has saved me thousands of dollars. My attorney advised me every time I receive a tint ticket to go and buy a $3 tint remover from Wal-Mart or any department store and save the receipt. Present the receipt to the court and you will not have to pay the sanction.
Have fun driving.

Cars with tinted windows are lame. Blocking my visibility all the time. Also the people who tint their lights, those are the gayest things I've ever seen!
|
AFAIK as long as the front window isn't tinted you should be fine. I had a Chrysler 300m with the back seat windows tinted and never got pulled over. Why not clear the front ones and ask for the tickets to be removed?
|
You're in their system ......
|
Have you ever been waved by a driver with front tint?
It's impossible to see.

I don't know the American law very well on this point but doesn't it also have something to do with the possibility to use the car for illegal activities as the police can't see inside it?
The fact that on the occasions you were stopped you had the windows down doesn't make a difference because there is still the possibility of having them up in other situations.
Also with heavily tinted windows when a cop stops you (for whatever reason) he can't see if you're pulling a gun on him or something. So if tinted windows were allowed those would always be used in robberies etc. and create a more dangerous work environment for the police.

No worries the police have their guns drawn and ready to fire no matter if your windows are tinted or not in every city I've been stopped in. So while on paper your point is valid, in real life it is not.

i wouldnt compare USA use of guns to the rest of the world...
In germany you are allowed to tint your backrow windows as dark as you want, just the front row side windows and the front window are not allowed to be tinted as long as you dont drive a government car.

This. If you've been ticketed before for this issue, when you're pulled over and they see a history that you haven't addressed(windows still tinted), you're going to get ticketed everytime.
|
I'm not sure how it works in other states, but I remember some of my high school friends getting tinted windows as some sort of prescription for sensitive eyes (this was in NJ). It might have been bullshit, but it's worth looking in to.
|
Look up your state's tint laws and make your windows compliant. You may have to peel the front tint if it's not allowed.
Depending on the state, there may be different tint levels for different types of vehicles. Usually trucks, SUVs, vans, etc. are allowed unlimited rear window tint.
|
Yeah I am stumped. "yo everytime I break the law I get a ticket" yes that is how it works. and if your a repeat offender, cops can easily see you driving and know you have tint and are therefor breaking the law. thats why there targeting you, Because you are a easy ticket. its 100% your own fault.
|
Is your front windshield tinted? If it is, why would having your windows down matter in the slightest?

Why would you even quote me? This guy that I'm quoting is talking about maybe in America police do x y z. I tell him in America they do a b c. You say I shouldn't compare America to the rest of the world. Please, please show me where I did that

QQ. What if you're driving at night and it's raining incredibly hard? Are you really going to keep your windows rolled down so you can see properly?
Tinted windows are illegal because they impair your vision, and thus impair your ability to drive safely - perhaps not dramatically, but driving is already dangerous enough as it is without hindering yourself for no good reason.
|
I think in Canada you can tint the side mirrors but not the front.
|
Looking cool definitely isn't worth increased danger on the road, why bother?

I was pulled over twice driving to ny and both times for my tint. It's 15% but legal in fl. Anyway I know the feeling

No, my front windshield is not tinted. My 2 front windows are. I do agree with you that tinting the front windshield is retarded.

It doesn't matter if I clear them or not. They won't drop the tickets. My plan was to actually get rid of the tint after getting my 1st ticket, but I had to work and didn't get the time to do it, so I drove with my windows down for the next couple of days. It still didn't stop the cops from being douchebags even though they didn't see my windows.

I'm sorry, but how in the fuck does having my windows (driver side/passenger side) block your visibility? Last I checked, you shouldn't be staring at other drivers while driving.

You're preaching to the wrong person, but it's more like "Yo, they didn't see that I had tinted windows, but stopped me just to fuck with me and forced me to show my tinted windows." They really had no reason to stop me the 2nd and 3rd time, but they did anyway. I wasn't speeding. I wasn't driving like an asshole. I was in my lane and had the cops just "randomly" stop me for no reason. I'm complaining more about the fact that it feels like I'm being harassed over such a petty issue when there are people doing much worse on a daily basis.

I can see properly without my windows down, but thanks for the concern. My tint isn't that dark. It's pretty easy to see through. The only time I have a hard time seeing through my windows is when my eyes aren't adjusted to the dark yet after I was just looking at something bright such as my computer screen.
On July 24 2011 06:08 Fontong wrote: Looking cool definitely isn't worth increased danger on the road, why bother?
I can argue that my tints have stopped the sun from blinding me many times, so they actually help me. My tint does not impair my vision as much as you think it does. I get the feeling that everyone thinks my tint is fucking dark black such as a 5% tint. It's not. It's only 20%. That's pretty damn easy to see through if you ask me. I haven't noticed any difference in my driving with or without tint. I can still see fine through both side mirrors and my rear view mirror with the tint. In the two years I've been driving with my tint on, I have never had to roll my windows down just to see through a mirror.

Ah curse all of those cops for giving you tickets for things that are against the law!!! Don't you just hate when you are trying to look cool and the cops are all up on you!
Get it fixed, its the law. And if you don't, then dont bitch when you get tickets.

Instead of bitching at you like the majority of this thread, I'd like to thank you, Mr. Joementum.
While the decision to have illegally tinted windows may seem foolish to some, your consistent, selfless donations to our underpaid, understaffed, and struggling police departments are helping to fill a large hole in their budgets.
I salute you!

Oh, don't worry. Our police departments definitely aren't struggling. A few tickets over a couple of years doesn't both me much anyway . It does when it happens 3 in 2 weeks though. I'm over it now however.

I agree, it's always nice to see upstanding citizens donate to governmental institutions.
Anyways, i would guess that they recognize your car, know that you have tinted windows, know that it's illegal and just want to make sure you actually remove the tint some day, so they stop you until you finally follow the law. I would guess that it's annoying for the police officers to see you driving with illegal car modifications (i.e. tinted windows) every day, mocking them by just paying the tickets instead of removing the cause ("I have money, i don't need to follow the law"... doesn't matter if it's true or not, that is what it looks like).
Should stop for a while if you change the paint of your car and get a fake beard.
