The Letter P

So recently I've undergone a revamp of the way I type, after realizing that my right hand had atrocious accuracy. I was reaching 100+ wpm using just two fingers on my right hand, but attempting to use any more fingers resulted in tons of typos. I thought since I had a lot of free time I'd retrain my typing so that I can use more fingers.

Hundreds/thousands of TypeRacer games later, and I have successfully trained my right hand to type with proper technique. It's wonderful and feels so much better. Everything is going swell.

Except the letter P.

I'm trying to learn the use my right pinkie to type the letter, as the graphs are showing me, but it just feels ridiculously uncomfortable. I hit it 50% of the time, sometimes I hit [ and sometimes just miss. However if I use my ring finger, I would have to shift my fingers to the right, unaligning the middle finger and sometimes the index with the rest of the keys; this results in typos after I try to move my hand back into position.

So I'm stuck in a conundrum. What finger to you use to type the letter P? And how should I approach this peculiar problem? Ring or Pinky?

P is definatly a ringfinger key, just look at the position.

P
J K L

Index finger on J, middle on K, ring finger on L right in position to move to P without moving your hand. To hit it with the pinky you would need to move your hand.

I use my middle finger to type the letter P, usually. I think from playing too many videogames where I need to use my left hand to control most of the keyboard and my right hand to use the mouse that my left hand just started to take over like 70% of the typing duties, leaving only my right hand to type the letter in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard. After watching what my hands are doing as I type this post, I've realized that the only letters that I actually use for my right hand are, by row:

uiop
jkl
m

Definitely not optimal for speed typing, but I get by. I'm not really a SLOW typer, but I'm not going to win any awards for my typing prowess either.

I think everyone posting in this thread should mention what they do and their WPM. It would be interesting to see how they correlate, if they do.

I use my pinky. My average speed on http://www.typeracer.com is about 90 WPM.

Well our computer class in high school included learning how to write with all ten fingers and the correct way is that your pointing fingers are rested at F and J and you write P with your pinky. Still i don't really write in correct way now so i write P with ring finger.

I'm about 110 WPM average on the long run, can burst (for like a minute or so) up to 130 WPM (at 0 mistakes). So I'd say I'm a decent typist.

I never use my right hand pinky finger for anything except the enter key (I even reach = and \ keys with ring finger). So I use my ring finger for P, naturally. Actually doing capital P with right shift made me use my middle finger, hmmm...

Anyways, I recommend the ring finger.

Ring is the correct way to P. Thus you save your pinky for shift and punctuation; it's too short to reach P anyway.

I think I've been swayed. I'm going to continue to see how it's going but I think I'll ring it!

I'd say it depends.

When I write in english I use the ring finger. When I write in French, I use the middle finger, since me right hand is pushed further right to use accents (éèà). In your case though I'd definitely suggest using ring finger.

I actually really depends on the word.

For "perhaps," I use my ring finger, but for "play" I use my middle finger because it slides down to "l" faster and more accurately than my ring finger does.

I was wondering about the same question for 15 minutes as I suddenly realized that I type ";" with my ring finger. lol. (I'm coming to this post 9 years later)

For ";", it is definitely with the pinky finger. But P should be the ring finger.

If you observe the W key on the left hand, it is almost impossible to use the pinky. Mirror that to the right hand, you would definitely use your ring finger to press P. Not to mention that to press "=" and "-" that are typically labelled as for pinky on graphs, you must use your ring finger. To reach them with your pinky, you must shift your whole hand, while using your ring finger you can spread out your hand.

(I type around 85wpm and peak at 110wpm)

This topic has got me thinking. I learned type writing in school, apparently I'm quite old. My course suggests pinky for p, index fingers on f and j. The page you linked throws really weird results at me, something around 90-140 WPM values. It's quite annoying to type in a different language, really.

I am a typing monstrosity. I would make any typist cringe.

But I still manage 90+ WPM, so it works, I guess :/
