I was lucky enough to get an opportunity to travel to China as an ambassador for a school in Vancouver BC(BCIT). The trip starts in beijing leads to nanjing and ends up in shanghai. I thought I would share some of my amazing experiences so far and to possibly give some perspective in short form to my fellow TL comrades.

The great wall is truly work of art and quite a wonder to walk and gaze on. Was a bit packed when I was going though.
The shopping was such a fun adventure at the knock off shops. As soon as you come in you are greeted by a swarm of aggressively friendly pretty girls with gifts. "hey handsome white man come buy for pretty girlfriend" you know fun stuff like that. Prices begin at something like 1000 yen and most likely end up at around 100 if you haggle hard enough. Probably the highlight of my trip so far, I'd recommend anyone to go take a look if they get a chance.
If anyone knows of a place to get knock offs in shanghai or nanning let me know! I'm not done yet!
I am currently in my second day in nanning and the students here are exceptionally friendly. It makes up for the cockroaches crawling all over my room and the squat toilets. I'm truly at an awe of the people here though. I've never met anyone so caring and compassionate before. Wonderful place to be.
Tomorrow I need to take part in their talent show and do something special. I have no idea what to do though. maybe sing that rick roll song? If anyone has any ideas let me know =) and thanks for reading thus far.

Wow, very cool! You are lucky to get to travel as your school's ambassador... do they pay for any of your trip?
Be sure to take plenty of photos! I've heard that Beijing is a great city! Have fun!

So that's where you've been -_- Didn't know BCIT had programs like this. Congrats!

They pay for everything! I am very lucky to be going on their dime.

Chinese currency is called Yuan 元, not "yen". I guess you are new, you will learn. have fun. Beijing is fun.

u should apply Cedstick! Currently not there; deciding on a new program. I definitely will when I go back, though
Are you going to be back this September? We've found a lot of new players to strengthen our base-line-up on the CSL team, but we could really use your double Thor drops XD
Edit -- talent found: the last three words of that last sentence.

Think you mean yuan, not yen. You're in China, not Japan :D But seriously, your trip sounds awesome. Do you know what section of the wall you went to?
As far as the bargaining goes, just remember: if they're still smiling when you complete the transaction, they are making a lot more money off of you than they should The rule of thumb we used for larger purchases while in China was 1:10 for value you should assume:value they will ask for. If I was told something cost 300 yuan, I would counter with 30. If you understand any Chinese, check how the Chinese tourists do it and aggressively go after the lower price, and you will have the shopkeepers crying and telling you that you are tai lihai (too terrible!) in no time.
|
Haha that haggling market you went to was probably called Silk Street (if it was huge and in Beijing).
Yeah you should start with 10% of the asking price, but since ur a foreigner it's gonna be really hard to get it down to that.
The girls are pretty cute though...and they speak like 4 languages.
How did you survive Nanjing's weather?
