Just to be clear to people who won't read the OP anyways, I won the game, there was no issue, just a potential issue.
I played a game, I won, and as he was about to leave the game was paused by him and the game showed:
<player> has left the game
There was no colon after the player name as there is in chat and the color looked normal. I went to the menu screen and there was a surrender option, but no score screen so I just clicked resume at which point he immediately (like impossibly quick reaction) left the game and the text was 100% identical.
I checked the replay, and this didn't show up so I can't show a screenshot or anything (wish I had captured it).
Is this just how it works when someone pauses and then leaves the game? Or is this some kind of hack?

You can see when someone leaves the game when it is paused, but it won't actually take effect until the game resumes. Some people just hit pause instead of surrender and don't bother to unpause before hitting the right option.

Oh, okay, that's weird. I was only really surprised because I got the "has left the game" message twice on screen and only once in the replay. Also if you could close the thread before it gets a million "he typed it in the chat" I'd appreciate it.
I am curious what would have happened if I had surrendered though....

Nothing, since he surrendered first. Same as clicking "view score screen."

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but are you sure you didn't misread the first text that you read because it probably said "<player name> has paused the game", and not "...has left the game"

Sorry for necroing but better then making a new thread IMO. Has anyone ever bothered reporting this? Just happened to me (and looking back probably happened a few times before, I guess I was lucky that my opponent thought that laughing at me afterwards would make him even cooler) and IMO its still cheating. Yes it kinda was my own fault because I didnt notice but this is still really abusive and just unfair. So anyone ever got any reply from blizzard about this?
I just thought that for some reason the menu didnt appear sometimes, this is why I wasnt surprised/confused, I guess thinking this means it has happened to me before and I kinda got used to it 
Still makes me want to puke, lost a few really stupid games today, then I get a 4gatev4gate and finally manage to concentrate and pull it off and then I loose like this -.- And the thought that some people go around doing this all the time is even sadder

Though what happened to you does suck and you really need to pay attention to this type of thing, that is not what happened to the OP.
His opponent paused the game first then legitimately surrendered. The game doesn't show the victory popup until the game is unpaused.

OP had a case where his opponent paused and then surrendered, but he unpaused and then the game client actually registered that his opponent had left.
The person who bumped the thread fell for the typing thing. They're two totally different things. Honestly, you should be falling for the typing "<player>: has left the game." Even if he were to fall for that, blizzard is unlikely to patch their game to make it harder for people to type troll messages like that in hopes that people actually press SURRENDER.
