Protagonist
The main Character in MLA is Takeru, you were this whiny ass little bitch back in Unlimited, but you now are a true baller. Takeru basically goes back in time with all his new learned skills and knowledge that he learned in Unlimited and tries to change the outcome of Unlimited. Thus the title ML-Alternative.
Heroines-The characters that drive the story, <= this is a lie
I won't go into the heroines mainly because I feel they aren't important. The entire story is event driven, not character driven but they are Meiya-An oujo type character, she's a relative of the Shogun Chizuru-A leader type character, you call her Yinchou (Class rep) Kei-A quiet type character. likes Yakisoba Mikoto-A genki type character, daughter of a super spy Tamase-A Loli type character, she's the Daughter of a UN leader
Honestly I think the side cast were more important. For such a great story the main heroines didn't really get many shining moments, except Meiya which I can write alot about, but I won't because that means I'll have to do the same for the other characters, which I can't. especially Kei which I can say almost nothing about except for her love of Yakisoba lol.
Side Cast Professor Kouzuki- She's a genius, but she failed so hard in Unlimited, that's why you are here to make things right. She can be a bit of a villain at times. She's also kind of a sadist, and she's a person that wants to save the world even if staining her hands with blood.
Kasumi-She's quiet and likes to hang out with a Brain, she wakes you up every morning, and she can speak with BETA(read Zerg)
made by Kouzuki, She's also your girl friend, and unknown to your knowledge she's that brain that Kasumi likes to hang out with. Apparently BETA really likes Brains.
Major Walken-I will give you a spot here because you were an awesome American dude. You were baller till the end.
Tsukuyomi- A Japanese Imperial guard, devoted to protecting Japan, Meiya, and the Shogun Yuuhi.
Marimo- She's your teacher. Gives of a real mother like feel.
Oh, how'd Osanasomething go? The translation I got DIDN'T ***ING FINISH RAN'S ROUTE, the only herione I actually cared about. It's pretty hilarious either way but I was seriously disappointed. I finished El's before but can't get myself to do the other two after Ran's story busted halfway through.

I didn't read Ran's route, Osana is still on my computer though. Finished the Yukino and Puchin and Ezekiel routes

Me too but I got used to it. And the music, sound effects and the ****ING STORY makes it so worth it. If it really bugs you, then you could wait for the PS3 release. They could probably patch the artwork into the PC version.
MuvLuv Alternative is really really good. MuvLuv Extra, while IMO necessary to fully appreciate Alternative, was not nearly as good.
Extra was your super generic romantic comedy harem. Takeru is your generic harem male lead, indecisive and all that crap. Then in Unlimited, Takeru wakes up in an different world, where Humanity is getting wiped out by the Alien BETA. 80% of the population has been killed off over 30 years of war, and pretty much all of Eurasia has been lost.
Then Unlimited focuses on Takeru growing from a shitty /a/ hero, to a pretty badass /m/an. Unlimited gets bad-ended though. Takeru gets looped back to the beginning of Unlimited at the start of ML Alternative, and then is determined to stop the events that bad-ended Unlimited from happening again. Queue lots of awesome battles and stuff.
All the girls from Extra are present in Unlimited/Alternative. Since Humanity is getting its ass handed to them by the BETA, the draft age has been massively lowered, and girls are getting drafted. A huge portion of the men had already died out. So all the girls from Extra are basically reintroduced as soldiers, which gives Takeru a pretty large culture shock. And later on, pretty much every single one of them gets their own moment to be badasses. Especially Kei:
Blasterion, there is actually a pretty huge CG set for this game :p
