Today while at my gym in the middle of my workout I decided to weigh myself out. I took my phone and other random shit out of my pocket and surprise surprise, I see and iPhone. I was honestly thinking if I should steal it or not... but then I thought about throughly and decided not too, keep in mind I have never stolen anything in my life and have had the opportunity to steal something worth 5,000 dollars.
I go to the front desk, tell the lady I found this phone, and she looks at my like I'm an idiot. She says "okay, give it to me" and I wtf.
Five seconds later and this black dude probably in his mid 30's comes from the front door and says thats mine, I just came back to get it. I was like cool, I gave it to him, deadlifted 189 kg's 4 times and felt like a boss!

Good Man ! Your not a idiot, the people who would look at you like that have no morals. Morals are something to live by, its not what you get its the feeling and gratitude.
I had a fortune cookie a long time ago and kept the fortune because its something I try and live by. It sits beside my best friends framed photo, newspaper obituary and pall-bearer flower from the funeral.
"We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
This is my moral code that could apply to many situations in life.

the real question is, will you ever know if it was really his?

It's good that you didn't steal it, but it's bizarre that you had to honestly contemplate whether to steal the phone or not, especially if you've never stolen anything before in your life.

yeah the guy was sweaty and had his keys and everything, he was probably coming back from his car and the first thing he said not even a second before he walked through the door was "yeah it's mine."

It sucks because every time I get the chance I always want to, knowing that I would literally have to do no work to get it, then I realize some guy probably busted his ass to buy it and I just return/turn it in.

From the way the story went, it sounds legit.
In the op he came to the desk from the front doors. He wasn't over hearing the conversation, so its impossible that he would have known about the iphone.
Why would he be looking for a iphone? He must have known it was missing, so it must be his.

This actually is normal. Many people would contemplate whether to steal the phone or not.
Its a nice expensive do-dad, your only human.

Not committing theft isn't exactly a good deed... but ok.
Maybe if it was a wallet full of cash with no ID and you can argue you have no way of finding its rightful owner, but to take a phone you see sitting around is just stealing since it's so easy to figure out to whom it belongs.
edit: ChefStarCraft, you're right, I guess if it was obvious the phone was lying around it was nice of him to turn it in.

The good dead was returning the phone. Not committing theft could have easily meant leaving it where he seen it, in this case someone else could have stolen it.
In my opinion it definitely is a good dead.

it's a good deed regardless of how simple it was. He could have just left it there.

not that stealing it would do any good anyways, you'd still have to wipe the system and pay for monthly service. It's not even worth it to go through all the hastle of selling it on ebay
|
i'd have grabbed it and sold it for quick 80 bucks or some shit
|
Yeah, you did the right thing for sure. But too bad it didn't belong to a hot girl or whatever. Could've maybe gotten a phone number.
