So I was playing my friend at SC2 last night betting $50 games (we're both Gold) and gradually my left bottom gum behind my back teeth started swelling.

FUUUUCK I wake up this morning and I am in severe pain. I do a bit of internet research and the answers vary, from rinsing my mouth with salt water, rubbing the swollen gum with oil, doing nothing, going to a dentist, not going to a dentist as there's nothing they can do unless the swelling comes down, needing just antibiotics, needing to have it surgically removed.

Blargh. I think I might end up going to the dentist. That's the good thing about the internet these days I guess, as I was just going to leave it for a few days to see what happened but apparently some people have said you need to get it sorted ASAP otherwise you might end up having to have your tooth extracted as the swollen gum infects their roots or something.

In other news... If you're reading this blog and still a teenager... Do good in school and don't waste your time on science, because everything is expensive once you grow up and having a physics degree is fucking useless unless you want to be a physics teacher. Do something that is in demand and will give you a stable income, like accounting or something.

Thanks for that - I'm a bit shocked that root canal treatment is required as it seems to be quite an extreme (i.e. expensive) step! I'm going to the dentist today so will post an update when I get back.

I'm planning to take a physics degree. How useless is it? or is it because you can't get a job?

Touche... I have a computer engineering degree and looking back maybe I should've done ChemE or Finance.

Don't waste your time on science? There's various studies of "science"; and not all of them are looking in bad shape to be fair.

Hey folks, thankfully the dentist said it was a reinfection of a wound that was caused due to having my wisdom teeth removed a few months ago, so no root canal is necessary as there is no tooth there to root canal. He prescribed me with some antibiotics and recommended that I use some dental mouthwash for the next week and it'll be back to normal after that. Altogether it came to sixty dollars.

+ Show Spoiler +
He also wants me to book a second appointment with him once it's all over to have my teeth cleaned, which will be another sixty dollar appointment.

With regards to studying physics... All I can say is that unless you're in the top five percentile of the class, you will struggle to find high paying work once you graduate. By all means take the degree if physics is your passion, but if your goal is to have a stable income and be able to provide for yourself and your family, it's much better (and easier) to just do an accounting degree. Even though physics requires the brightest students, many are duped into thinking that being good at it means anything for your future.

Good, actually. My friend graduated in it with an A average and his first job pays him $90,000 per annum.

Oh yeah, another thing for those thinking about doing physics - just ask any physics graduate whether they would retake the degree if they could turn back time. Too many stories of people graduating from it and ending up with some mediocre $30,000 per annum job because they couldn't get the top physics jobs that were reserved for the top two to three students out of a class of 300.

:O That's terrible (both the physics degree information and the teeth)

Could that qualify as malpractice (sort-of)? Not telling you to sue him, but does that mean it was sort of his fault that caused your infection...? >:[

...but that's good to know! Obviously I don't know where I will be and what I will want to do in five to ten years or so, but it's good that EE is a degree with "utility", so to speak.

I'm a chemistry major and I think science is perfectly fine. Although I wouldn't suggest either of the other two sciences (biology or physics ) to anyone who does not expect to get straight 4.0's in university as the workforce is so limiting for "average" students of these fields. However, I feel like there's a lot of potential for super hard working students of physics and biology.

On topic, I hope your gums fix themselves, that sounds like a huge inconvenience!
