I wish I could get the video file of each game of NASL via an RSS feed of torrent files for a private tracker for pass holders.

Here is the setup the viewer would need to do: download and install a torrent program like µTorrent, go to the scheduler settings and set the schedule so bandwidth is used only when you're not normally using your computer (when you sleep/work/go to school), add an RSS feed URL that NASL provides, set the folder you want your downloads to go to. This all takes no more than 5 minutes.

Bam. 5 days a week you go on your PC to find all the files already downloaded to your computer to the folder of your choice, all organized into a spoiler free folder system.

And in fact, things could get even better. Do you want only Protoss games? Create a filter for your RSS feed to download only the files containing Protoss. Perhaps you want only recommended games? Of course, you'd have to take the NASL staff's word on what's recommended, but NASL can add a recommended tag so you can filter for recommended. Or you want only certain players? Make filters for their ID's. Don't want the pregame show? Filter it out.

So yeah this would take some setup from NASL, and ongoing maintenance. But they have the staff, don't they? Last I heard, they've turned away volunteer work, so I assume they've got the labor they need. Or could get it easily enough. They've got to create a private tracker with RSS for their site. They've got to cut their broadcast video into smaller files (one for each game) and label each one. They've got to place the files into a spoiler free folder structure. Then they've got to create a .torrent file each day and upload it to their tracker. It isn't a negligible amount of work but it isn't a huge amount of work either. And it doesn't really take any expertise. Any person who is somewhat "good with computers" and has google would find it all pretty easy. If they wanna provide a really nice service, they'd also maintain a seedbox, and those aren't expensive and don't add much more labor to the process.

Since JTV is doing all their streaming and holding all the vods, wouldn't this be something needed to be implemented by JTV? I mean, wouldn't hosting at minimum 10 1080p videos at probably 10-15m 5 days a week each be pretty huge to host and allow downloading from NASL.tv?

just copy gomtv lol

http://www.gomtv.net/records/index.gom you cant make it any easier to find the games you want to watch =)

The current NASL/JTV Vod system seems to suck alot. I hope they change it pretty soon. split games hq and lq .. spoiler free

The future is coming quickly. Just not quite yet I guess.
And yeah, the technology is already here, but it always takes some time before people actually start using it efficiantly.

The only issue i can see here is that people will download the files and pirate the shit out of them and rather than support the leauge by buying a season pass. Other than that it would be nice to have the vods to be on my computer and i could watch them whenever i.e put them on a laptop and watch on a plane or traveling

The main concern I would think is that there's nothing stopping those people from putting the torrents up on public trackers for people without season passes to download.

If they made their videos the same bitrate as their HQ stream (3000kbps) then they'd use 1.28GB per hour of video. For a 4 hour day they're looking at about 5GB worth of videos to upload that day. 45 days of divisional play would be 225GB worth of videos. Looks like their whole season would come in under 1TB even with more generous estimations. That is definitely something they could manage without jtv's help.

People are already doing that and they aren't hard to find. What Tyler is suggesting is something that will help people that already ARE paying or might WANT to pay in the future.

You can already download the VODs from JTV if you know how to do it.. it's fairly simple also.

I bought the NASL pass and instead of watching the VODs in my desk (i cant make it to the stream) i download them and then stream the VODs to my tv in my livingroom

Anyone with a pass could do the same and then upload the VODs to a torrent website

NASL vods are already on some torrent trackers lol. But I agree that NASL providing a torrent service would certainly make it easier for them. Nonetheless, they'd be inferior.

The idea is for NASL to provide the best service, and the official service, so you know you're consistently getting what you want, as soon as it's available, and you're supporting the people who are providing it.

The thing is, making a product inconvenient for pirates also makes it inconvenient for paying customers. This is old news. Just google DRM to get started on all the ways paying customers have been punished by companies because of the actions of pirates. I don't want to talk about that.

As far as I can tell, NASL has partnered with JTV for the purposes of distributing the live stream and the vods. Well, JTV is bad at distributing vods. They're godly with streams. But for vods, individual files are better than one big file. Files on our hard drives are better than a link to a web page with an embedded video player.

There are people that actually want to hit play, sit back and watch the entire broadcast as if it was live. They have what they want. For everyone else, we need to ask for what's best for us. My blog is doing just that. I detailed exactly what I want. If you want it too, or have some way to improve upon it, or another solution that's better in every way, say so!

It's a good idea but it's just one among many that would help improve NASL at this point. I think getting vods in lower quality and splitting them up between games and sorting out a lot of their website issues would be higher on the priority list (as far as the small improvements go)

Wasn't the original NASL trailer on blip? Why not just continue using blip for VODs?Its a shame that youtube announced their streaming after NASL partnered with JTV,with youtube they would have had great streaming and ultimate VOD experience.

This is a good idea, but why does it have to be through a torrent? Couldn't they break up the justin tv videos into individual games and post it on the website? Somewhat similar to GOM?

edit- Or they could do what the TSL is doing and put it up on youtube.

Not using a torrent requires enormous amounts of internet bandwidth and speed on their side, plus makes it much harder for the viewer to do the automation that Tyler is talking about (which is a great idea in my opinion, i would definitely make use of such a service if it were an option).

I would certainly like NASL to take a more active part in the VOD side of their broadcasting.
Although, they would have to do some redesigning of their website, because at the moment you cant open the front page without having spoilers leap out at you. While I was just trying to find the VODs for NASL I managed to find the results of every game I wanted to watch easily, but that was what I was looking.
As far as I can tell, it hasn't been made completely apparent how VODs are being handled. I know now that I'll have to go through Justin tv, and do so before I look at the NASL website, and I'm not entirely happy with that.

Going through justin.tv directly isn't perfect either, because comments are immediately visible next to each video. At least with GOMTv you have to scroll down to be able to see the comments. Thankfully I haven't been spoilered yet, but the potential is there.

There's a minimum of 10 games a day 5 days a week, it's a league not a tournament, with that many games happening every day it's hard not to spoil them. People like standings and stuff to be updated instantly. Go to any sports site and they generally have the scores from the games on the front page AS THEY HAPPEN. So I have no problem with NASL doing the same thing.

I think that torrents would be nice, or at the very least have a player like Gom's where you select the match and it lets you pick which game from the match to watch.

I'm afraid torrents are gonna take this over. Games are not live anyway, so if you not get spoiled, you can just dl torrents day after broadcast and enjoy when you want.
I did test it (I watched broadcast), and dl speed is great, very fast, and a lot of seeders, and its for day1.
When this thing gets popular and establish as the best SC league outside Korea (which is the plan), 90% of people will go for torrents.

I hope NASL crew can make it popular so they can survive and get budget from commercials, that would be awesome. Everyone watch it for free, but DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT COMMERCIALS, big prize pools, sponsors are happy, players are happy, crowd is delighted !!
I really want SC to take over the world

This might not be a 100% troll.

they could put comercials into the torrents and they would need only a minimum of actual bandwidth for them all seeing how you could put that all on the backs of seeders a day after you post it.

the torrents could be dl'ed off of the site itself to make sure people don't dl virus's and other things. whole thing is probably stupid to think of anyway but at least I wouldn't have to watch that shitty pregame or worry about missing a fun battle with the stream lagging.

I'd love this an option. I'd be easy to tie your private passkey to your jtv account so only subscribers could download the torrent.

As Tyler mentioned, this is only a matter of beating others to the punchline. Not a matter of whether it will happen or not. As SC2 continues to get more and more popular with more and more content, pirating is going to become more and more of a problem.

As it currently stands, the NASL's method of content distribution leaves much to be desired. It is very easy for someone to upload VODs to torrent sites and suddenly, there is a better method. Individual files for each match, locally available.

As a paying customer of NASL, I would download these torrents of individual matches Why? Its cleaner and easier. If the NASL is able to establish a really quick and seemless way for people to do this legitimately, they will be able to prevent *A LOT* of pirating.

The major deal breaker is the commercials. Torrents don't make commercials as easy of a thing to do, since you'd have to integrate it into the video. Which makes me think it would be better to just have ads in the lower portion of the screen which is essentially useless anyway.

What I imagine happening instead is NASL working with JTV to have individual VODs which do not have game spoiling comments immediately visible once you click it. But torrents with an RSS feed would be a really, really good thing.

Torrents of the SC2 scene are going to grow. Just a question of if these organizations can stay ahead of the game.

I definitely agree with Tyler; this would be an excellent service which I would greatly appreciate. Watching videos off of my hard drive is significantly more enjoyable than streaming them.

I haven't had to try to use J.tv's VoDs yet, but they look like a fairly frustrating experience.
