PATCH 2.0 UPDATE- 6/28/11
-Numerous revisions given more recent performances of the players. -Idra changed from Jon Fitch to Kenny Florian, he's really mixed up his style and can no longer be considered a pure macro player. -MC changed from Shane Carwin to Jon Jones, he doesn't just do 1 or 2 base all-ins anymore but actually plays macro games. -Sanzenith changed from Overeem to Matt Serra, dropped out of Code A. ;_; -TLO changed from Anderson Silva to Anthony Pettis, Anderson is the best fighter in the world, and as much as I love TLO I think Pettis would be a better fit. -CombatEX changed from Nick Diaz to Tony Bonello, I actually like Nick Diaz and this gives me the opportunity to add an animated GIF, unprecedented! -Added Naniwa
I've always thought there to be a lot of similarities between professional Starcraft and MMA; two men, alone, duking it out with one another to determine who is superior. In their own way both sports have fairly intense training regimens, and there are many different styles that competitors adopt, which makes it all the more interesting when clashing styles meet in a matchup.
Anyway, the other day I was watching QXC play and thought to myself how his playstyle was similar to Chang Sung Jung, the Korean Zombie, who keeps coming forward recklessly and attacking his foe. After some thought I decided to draw comparisons between a number of progamers and MMA fighters. The following is what transpired:
Idra – Kenny Florian
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/ob64h.jpg)
The talent is there, he’s always acknowledged as one of the elite, but whenever it comes down to it and he gets his shot at the title he chokes.
Qxc – Korean Zombie (Chang Sung Jung)
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/fci9v.jpg)
Has an extremely aggressive style and never stops coming at you, sometimes recklessly aggressive.
Whitera – Randy Couture
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/VEQcW.jpg)
Should not be able to compete at high levels at his age but does so and has a fair amount of success even in the winter of his career. Has been around the scene for a very long time and regarded by many as a legend in the sport.
MC – Jon Jones
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/SyZl1.jpg)
Already acknowledged as one of the best, but only time will tell whether he truly becomes a legend.
Sanzenith – Matt Serra
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/7LJGN.jpg)
Seen as a huge underdog but managed to shock the world, had his 15 minutes of fame and then sank back into obscurity.
Huk – Mayhem Miller
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/OR4XO.jpg)
Don’t let the goofy personality fool you, he’s very skilled and his unconventional and unpredictable style has triumphed over many of the best.
Jinro – Antonio Silva
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/bRzGn.jpg)
You know, I couldn’t really akin Jinro’s fairly passive macro-Terran style to any fighter, but these guys both have awesome chins, so that’s the best I got.
Day9 – Bas Rutten
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/KvY1I.jpg)
Once a top competitor, now retired. He is still highly respected by the community and provides excellent high level commentary.
MVP – Forrest Griffin
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/iqXeY.jpg)
Former champion. Has huge heart and will soldier on long after he should have lost, and sometimes he’ll come back and take the win.
Liquid Tyler – Rickson Gracie
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/UthzP.jpg)
Lauded by many in the community for his world-class talent. Known for his claims of being capable of besting current champions.
Marineking – Shinya Aoki
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gXeVM.jpg)
Extremely talented at a single discipline.
TLO – Anthony Pettis
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/MieYF.jpg)
Highly talented and often surprises opponents with very creative moves.
Bomber – Eddie Alvarez
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/gbkq7.jpg)
Thought to be one of the best, but has not competed at the highest level and thus not quite proven himself.
Destiny – Chris Leben
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qvkBv.jpg)
Not the best, not the worst, but highly entertaining and a fan favorite.
Boxer – Fedor Emelianenko
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/qksaV.jpg)
Though now in a slump and is looking at retirement, is widely hailed as the greatest of all time and is a legend. Called "Emperor" by many.
Cruncher – Brandon Vera
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/jUNWB.jpg)
Initially considered a top prospect after some notable victories, a series of poor performances have dropped him down to the level of "mediocre".
July - Wanderlei Silva
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/sc92q.jpg)
Known for his relentless, aggressive style. He has had numerous victories in the past and has cemented himself as a legend.
CombatEX - Tony Bonello
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rbpXm.jpg)
A typical CombatEX match:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/XkD7j.gif)
TT1 - Josh Barnett
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/dTNFF.jpg)
Caught cheating in the past. Now seeks redemption.
Spanishiwa - Lyoto Machida
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/S5Jgn.jpg)
Known for his extremely unorthodox style that has been the bane of many opponents who failed to adapt.
Naniwa - George St. Pierre
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/2Bspn.jpg)
Extremely strong in all aspects of the game, not the most exciting to watch but always brings his A game and gets the win.

You made some really great comparisons here. I am impressed. The only one I really disagree on is Cruncher/Jones.
|
I'd probably go with MC as Anderson Silva and if you were looking for an up and comer I'd go with Phil Davis instead of Jones (although you did say prechampion hard to be up and coming at the top). But that's just my opinion, other than that good list :3
|
Jinro could be Silva's son.

|
hahaha, destiny looks so wonky. why is his beard photoshopped off?

Oh shit, I didn't even realize that was a shop. Better hotfix that...
|
Haha. I missed this the first time around. I'm not that much into MMA, but I'm familiar with the majority of the fighters and I've got to say, a lot of these comparisons were surprisingly good. Good job.

TLO – Anderson Silva
No Anderson Silva is the best P4P fighter in the world. He has a complete game, and has demolished and destroyed every single person in his weight class. Then stepped up to fight higher weight class and won just to show how pro he is.
and OH shit it's TLO what can I say about him he is god. Hmmmmmmm fuck but I don't think he is as great as the Spider :-)

It's just a comparison of certain aspects they have in common, not a complete comparison.
|
That was pretty damn cool!
|
Ret - BJ Penn Amazing talent, but when it comes to motivation they are not the best. When they do try their best, nobody can stop them.
Thorzain - Frankie Edgar Always the underdog, but everytime you see them fight/play you are impressed by them.
Also, I dont like the CombatEx - Diaz comparison, because Diaz is actually good.
Will edit if I get some more

Come on.. no one figured it out??

Those are very good. I was actually considering Thorzain - Edgar but it must've slipped my mind at some point.
I also had the same reservation about CombatEX - Diaz, but the trash-talking comparison was too good to pass up.

ahahahha, i loled at this thread...
|
One more

Cool idea. Agree and disagree with some. But good work nontheless. I mainly disagree with MC as Carwin!
|
|
The fact that combatex is on this list is mind blowing.... the blog was good until this pos appeared.... really disappointed.
|
Love MMA and Sc2 so this is AWESOME.
I disagree with :
MC as Carwin. TLO as Anderson Silva MVP as Forrest Griffin(Forrest should never have been champion, while MVP has been) San as Overeem(The Uberreem is way too good to be compared to San, the guy is a K1 champion multiple times, he needs to fight in the UFC and beat the HW division like a boss. Bas says it, I agree.)
I think MC as Anderson Silva. TLO has to be someone good, but not a champion with original strategy.
The rest are spectacular and here is why!
Idra is 100% Jon Fitch, you know what he wants to do and know he is great at it, but even so, generally you still lose because he makes you fall into it.
QXC wreckless agression can describe both men!
White-Ra and Randy Couture have the same history if you look at their match ups historically.
Huk and Mayhem Miller can alternate hosting Bully Beatdown and I would not realize they are changing hosts every other episode.
Chinro as Big Foot is great, they are both methodical fighters.
Day9 is the Bas of SC2.
Tyler as Rickson is so good, that I literally LoL'd outloud and I don't mean League of Legend.
Marine King is Leglock King.
Bomber the feared terran on ladder, Eddie Alvarez the feared lightweight in ALL tournaments he is in.
Wish you had found a chin strap photo of Chris Leben for the lulz, but 150% accurate here.
Boxer as Fedor, both emperors and accused of being robots at one time.
Cruncher as Vera, so accurate since he tauted being the first LHW/HW champion at the same time and Cruncher, to Idra caused upheave.
July is Wanderlei, both relentless aggression once they find a hole.
TT1 is Barnett because of cheating and steroid allegations, but both are insanely talented.
Spanishiwa is the Lyoto of our time. The man has made zerg fun to ALL, I don't get upset as a terran losing to the ice fisher build, into nydus and infestors owning my scv's. Much like people can't be mad at Lyoto for beating them with Karate.
Only thing Spanishiwa needs is to win a belt.
Sorry for the rant, but I am a die hard fan of both.

I read the whole post, and my only thought was that Machida looks like Ryu. He looks like he's just itching to throw out a hadouken.
|
wow really cool
didn't know all these characters were so closely related
|
since when was Combat a pro? lol
|
Haha I thought the last one was Ryu.
|
Awesome post! Tweeting this now :p
|
Pretty awesome write up, I lol'd at combatex and diaz as a comparision.
Also, whoever said BJ Penn and Ret was dead on!
|
The Machida pick is shopped to add the ryu headband, but dude looks like him.
|
I know nothing about MMA but I still enjoyed it. Found Spanishiwa's smile at the end hilarious after the pictures it followed
|
I thought it was about time for an update.
|
Wow that was a great update. I really have not followed MMA as much as i would love to, but this was well done. Good job!
|
I'd compare GSP to any high level TvT winner simply because they're usually boring with occasional spurts of excitement. I say TvT "winner" because yes it may be a boring style, but the man just doesn't lose.
By the way, I'm a big GSP fan but I'll admit most his fights are boring :/
