So I took a page out of DjWheats book and thought it would be a fun idea to try and mold my son, who is also 5, into a Starcraft 2 pro gamer.
This is a lot of work. It requires tons of patience, but is really fun to do. The biggest challenge we've had so far is maintaining focus. He's excelling at building drones and zerglings, and he can take out an AI on Very Easy, but he's really more concerned about taking overlords for walks and building assimilators on every gas node on the map.
It's important to keep in mind that Rome wasn't built in a day, so we are going to keep at it and see how it goes. I'm thinking it will be a little tricky for him to make sense of the minerals/gas/supply counters for a little while, but I'm proud to say that he is grasping the basics very well
Also, today I found a sequel to a game I played a million years ago called Majesty. It's a fantasy kingdom sim, kind of similar to My Life as King for the Wii, or maybe Settlers? I like kingdom sims like these, or Black and White (GODLY GAME, no pun intended). Has anyone played those games or anything like them? I'm going to beat Majesty 2 pretty quick and I need something for after!
Oh and hello Season 2! Didn't see you sneaking up there. I have not yet done my 1 placement match for 1v1, but I got diamond in 3's :D

That's cute, lol taking overlords on walks huh sounds like someone wants a dog :D lol good luck

Lol funny. I was trying to teach my 5 yr old son to play SC1 untill his mum decided it was too violent.. Then I sort of gave up and stuck with Mario / Sonic and old classic games.

Hahah, nice nice! I remember playing sc1 when I was 8'ish It'll set him up for life

This has to be one of the cutest things ever. Almost as cute as mini wheat wanting a 3DS and asking for one everyday for the past 2 weeks, as dj wheat posted on twitter. Other people's kids are the best *__* I won't ever need my own when I can get my daily dose of cute from other people. XD

I think when I was 4-5 I was just guided through the wc2 campaign. I think trying to Sparta your son through competitive Sc2 like that is a little bit harsh. Things should be fun before they become work.

Not to shamelessly promote my own TL Blog, but this is about my experiences as a stay at home dad as relates to e-sports and gaming. You might appreciate it.
As for not being able to focus yet, the key to better immersion might be the campaign. When he's interacting with something going on, maybe he'll be able to stay a bit more on track.
You could also play co-op vs the AI, and have him rescue you from the mean computer.

I don't want it to be misconstrued as me sitting here shouting build orders and tactics at a 5 year old. It was his idea to try playing tbh :S

I got what you meant. It made perfect sense to another dad with a youngling in need of training up to be a proper geek. You just wouldn't mind at all if you were able to produce a prodigy out of that fun father/son time.
