I just returned after 5 hours of writing non stop for a Final exam. Fucking insane how my mind is numb after this. So I ask you TL which was your longest Exam ever done? and did you pass it?

My exam was a 7 question exam about a Public Relations Case which I had to examine Boeing (The aeroplane manufacturer) and its crisis situation about the 6 year delay of the launch of their new Jumbo jet 787.
It isn't super hard but damm its tiring.

Well the United States standardized SAT (the exam that high schoolers take to get into a good college) is 3 hours and 45 minutes, which is probably the longest test that most Americans take. I've taken college exams that are around that long too. The worst was probably my math analysis (read as: Calculus 5) exam, which was about 3 hours and 30 minutes, and wasn't ridiculously easy like the SAT was -.-'

I think 3 hours was the longest exam I've ever done, it was engineering so there was a lot of thinking/calculating involved not non-stop writing but it was a bitch, a 5 hourer must be insane.

I think 3 hours (some 50% of module exam at the end of the uni year) is the longest single exam I've sat, however I did have one day during my A levels (required to enter University) where I had 3 exams during a day which also clashed with another subject I needed to sit an exam for. So I had to do 6 hours of exams then go to a teachers house and stay there overnight without communication and take the exam the next day .

That said my A levels weren't exactly brain taxing so I can't imagine any exam 5 hours long that actually required you to think. Must actually hurt after that long!

Physics exams in my highschool were really long, some people spent the entire day with them (7 hours). The longest for me was probably around 5 hours long.

Oh yeah they were usually about statics. Bigass problems.

And they were hard as hell, I was always a little afraid about rechecking my solutions because if I found a mistake in one then I would have to do it all over again. And the paper they gave us to write in was some recycled trash that looked like total shit if you ever considered erasing in it.

I didn't take it, but a physics professor at a college I went to once gave a 24 hour final. I believe there were 6 questions. You were also allowed to call any of your friends (not in the class) for help if you wanted - because it wouldn't matter anyway. :p

My longest exam was a 4.5 hour tort final with only one question / hypothetical. That exam was the last one I had in my first semester of law school, started at 4 and got out at 8:30. It was a pain in the ass, especially because you want to finish it up so bad so you can go party and enjoy winter break.

Algorithms and Data Structures: 8 hours

morning: 4 hours of exercices
afternoon: (1.5 hour writen theory and 0.5 hour oral exam ) x 2 although you had more time than you needed for the theory so it wasn't a full 4 hours of hard work.

Longest without breaks was probably history and chemistry on 1 day in high school: 4h40 non stop.

My longest test was a 37 page component and design techniques for digital systems. I think I finished in roughly three hours but it was so long that my professor had to leave the exam to catch a flight. The TA proctored the rest of the exam after he left.

Have had like 3 exams that were 6 hours long without any sort of books etc. - that is the shittiest I've ever experienced, not counting the 48-hours ones which aren't all that bad as you get to sit in the comfort of your own home and you can actually look stuff up that you can't remember.

oh, and there was a 24 hour take home population biology final exam. Which literally took me 24 straight hours...

That one was more painful than the time unlimited honors linear algebra take home final, which took 2 days.

Huh.. probably 2nd semester algebra exam, also at a quite shitty time.. it was 4 hours from 2 pm to 6 pm, so you had a lot of time to turn insane before the exam.

Take home exams are the worst, because you end up overworking on them.

My longest in class exam would be the comprehensive exam at the end of my masters, which was six hours long. Fortunately there was a one hour break in the middle.

We had all day exams back in grad school. You wake up then print the exam from a website at 9 am usually it was around 26 pages. The questions were from several different professors and from several different fields. Then you turn it in at 5 pm at school. All open book and open internet and open whatever, but that didn't help you. There was no way to look up stuff if you didn't already understand how to work the problems. Most stressful exams ever.

Two three hour exams back to back, one on contract law and one on business law. I was absolutely destroyed after that lol. Luckily passed with a 8 and 9 out of 10 respectively.

6 hours maths exam. I did 1/10th of the subject at best, had an ok mark though. Gotta love concours; Also had 5 hours of physics.
Worse days were 4 hours morning and afternoon, especially when it was that during basically 4 days.
4th week it started to be pretty annoying. And two years in a row, thanks to my brilliant choices^^
But the worst were orals. One hour a day was enough to exhaust me :/
Ahhh, the good old days. I'm not through with exams, but I'll never see that again.

6 hours. I only wrote like a couple of lines at a time, thinking a lot about exactly what to write and whatnot, then as I was closing in on the last hour, I was semi-panicking as I realized I still had a lot to write . I tend to make that mistake a lot, but at least the first half of it is usually pretty well written, I guess.

I remember one exam where I started at 8 o'clock and got home around 6. The actual answering of the questions didn't take that long, but you had to defend your answers during an oral exam. And those things take ages if their is only 1 professor for a whole bunch of people.
My own mistake though, I was finished quite early but wanted to make very VERY sure I didn't make any stupid mistakes. Little did I know the second part took that long...
I learned my lesson after that one.

An interview is always some sort of an examination, but an actual job has a lot longer examinations. In November I spend 3 days in front of a jury of customers defending and proving my designs during a design review.

For becoming a licensed professional engineer you take two 8-hour exams.

EIT (Engineer in Training) Covering all areas of Engineering, Civil, Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Computers as well as Physics, Economics and a few other topics.

PE (Professional Engineer) Specializes in area you work, electrical for me, with further specialization in either power, computers or circuits.

Passed both easily. Once you learn how to take exams, the length and subject really becomes irrelevant.

Most of my finals have 2-3 hour time-slots, but generally it's not all needed.

iirc all AP tests are about 3 hours, too.

Longest test I have taken so far is the FE Info. The first half is a general exam given to all engineers, the second half is specialized to your discipline, Mechanical Engineering for me, in total it ends up being like 8 hours or so.
Mixed with the breaks and logistics on top of the test itself this ends up taking an entire Saturday where you come in early in the morning and leave at 6:00 p.m. or so. The test is fully comprehensive so I had questions on a huge range of coursework from basic chemistry to strengths of materials to heat transfer/fluids. Thankfully, since the test covers such a huge breadth of subject matter they don't tend to have incredibly in depth problems and the pass rate is actually quite reasonable.

My longest was 6 hours for the putnam math competition. It's kind of like the USAMO except on crack. To give you an idea, each problem is worth 10 points, there are 120 points total, and the median score is often below 10 (actually, from my stats, from 1998-2006 the highest median score was 3 points, the others being 1 and 0)

This doesnt relate to test durations but I have a question about studying before exams. Lets say if you have 2 free hours before a test, basically a gap between another class... Would it be ideal to put in more study time into it or relax and try not be all hyped up about it?

I know its subjective since some can remain all calm and dandy about exams while others including me get really nervous, essentially the mind gets clouded.

I passed the exam got a 4/10 (60% right) but didn't pass the group work part we got a 3/10 so I have to take the exam again the 3.5 turns into a 3 FAIL. Very weirdly Im not that bummed out, I did pass so I know that its possible to pass the whole thing According to many other students I know that this is the hardest subject in the whole career so Im practically Finishing the hardest part of my career. Sadly I will have to study this again in 4 months hope I remember all this. FML.

The CPA test used to be a 2-day event. I'm glad we can break it up into separate days now (4 exams). But most of the "old-timer" CPAs I know had to do it this way. Insane.
