I was waiting for some friends to show up at an art gallery this morning. One showed up, and it being 45 minutes before the opening of the gallery anyway, we decided to go get some coffee and then come back to wait for the rest of our friends.
We walk 3 blocks to Starbucks, at which point I open my wallet to find that instead of the $15ish I thought I had, I had $1.75. My friend suggested we go the the McDonald's up the street and look for an ATM.
We arrive at the McDonald's and see that there's no ATM inside. I decide at that point that McDonald's coffee is good enough, so while walking towards the counter and counting the money in my hands, I loudly announce to my friend "I guess this ghetto coffee will have to do."
I look up from the change in my hand to see that every single one of the staff behind the counter is black, and is giving me a disgusted look of confusion and anger. Sheepishly, I ordered a medium black coffee and got out of there as quickly as I could.
I'm an asshole. :X

Good fun read during work hour

starbucks is bullshit coffee dude. enjoy your sugar water. but fucking hilarious. i've been in positions like that before.
|
Art gallery... StarBucks... Hmmm, things are adding up.
|
Looks like you'll be wearing a fake mustache to that McDonalds from now on.
|
Good quote from a rapper.
"Ghetto aint a god damn adjective"
I hope you felt real bad after.
|
If not knowing how much money there is in your wallet means to be an asshole, so am I. It's not your fault dude, it's your wallet's fault.
|
Damn wallets stealing ur moneys. Fuck wallets.
|
Wait why were all the people working at this McDonald's black lol? I thought that they had some diversity quotas...

no kidding.. I'd be less concerned about being an asshole and more concerned about being a tool.

The part of town where the mcdonalds is might have alot of black people in it. The boss could be biased towards black people, too.
I hope you learned your lesson about using that as an adjective, OP.
Edit; but it's not like someone should take a racial offense towards the word. All types of races have lived in ghettos at one point or another (jews, immigrants on the east cost, black people). But you could take offense to it if you've lived in one before.

|
I fail to see how this makes you an asshole. To most young people ghetto is just another way of saying cheap. People can be so sensitive.
|
sounds like you wanted to get your ass beat lol
|
People in the states find ghetto to you a derogatory term? I had no idea, you can go around calling eachother spazzes but using ghetto as an adjective is a sin? :S
Though like the guy above said art gallery, starbucks... :X.

There's an asshole in side of us all.

Oh man, foot in mouth really sucks. I had a similar incident while working at a waterpark. All attendees have to wear these waterproof bracelets that we put on them as they come through the entrance. Anyway, this roughly 10-yr-old boy and his dad come up to the entrance and the son's limping a bit. I didn't look closely 'cause I was getting bracelets for them and I just casually said "Hey man, how are y'all today? Did you hurt your foot or something?" And I looked down and he just had a stub there... Holy crap did I ever switch the subject so fast and just tell them to have a nice day!
Looking before we speak doesn't happen all the time, haha.

Well theres another reason they could have been offended (which isnt really race-realted)
Lets say they all live in that area and don't have a lot of money, and thus don't get their $5 venti extra-hot vanilla lattes from starbucks like some people. Its possible that they could understand you calling the McDonalds coffee ghetto as you saying that you are better than them or that the stuff they serve/eat is not good enough for you.
But yes its true, the term ghetto has nothing to do with black people. Its actually quite sad that this correlation exists .

Reminds me of a funny incident...I was going to a baseball game with a couple buddies that I didn't know that well. I had played ball hockey with them a few tiems but other than that knew nothing about them. On our way to the stadium I noticed the one guy was walking with a pretty severe limp. Now I had just played bal hockey with him for a few hours the week before and didn't notice anything wrnog with how he was running. So I blurted out "hey man, why are you gimping it up? hurt your knee or something?"
Turns out he had a spinal birth defect o something and and had a bunch of surguries before the age of 12. He threatened to beat my ass then we all laughed it off. Haven't seen that guy since...lol

LOL oh man that must have been awkward.
At my work someone consistently called a woman "sir" and she got really pissed. (In my coworker's defense, she was wearing unisex/male clothing, had a buzz-cut, and a relatively deep voice). She actually refused to speak to him and came over to me, showed me her driver's license, pointing to the "Gender: F" and screamed WHAT DOES THAT SAY!?
hahahaha
|
Well that's what I meant... that the McDonald's stuff is cheap and not of high quality. I probably wouldn't of felt as bad if all the staff members hadn't looked at me the way they did. I might not have even made the correlation, but they certainly did.
The kid with the missing foot is so bad. I feel for you man. That's a lot worse than my story :X
If going to a free art exhibit with friends and drinking coffee from the most popular coffee chain in NA makes me a tool, then I guess I'm a tool.
The worst is always the look you get. That look that says "you've offended me", when you really didn't mean it. I remember once in a High School gym class someone was kicking volleyballs around while me and friends were trying to have a legitimate game. A stray kicked ball hits me in the leg, and as I'm picking it up I yell "Hey shitface stop kicking the ball around", only for my eyes to meet with the one Pakistani kid in the entire school who came to retrieve the ball. That look is so awful. I didn't mean it like that! I just- you hit me- I'm sor-! Yeah that sucks.

on a related note, I read on redflagdeals that McDonald's is giving free coffee for a week in Canada starting Feb 28!

hahaha So i wast watching this movie in theaters, there was a scene where this insane guy was talking about how everyone should be dead and he was like "and them niggers!!" I busted out laughing so hard, mainly because of how crazy he was acting, but turns out no one in the whole theater laughed, and black people were sitting behind me :\

Believe it or not most young people in cities use slang. I've never seen or heard of anybody being offended by it before now. I have people call the area I live in ghetto before and never taken it as an insult. I just think, yea, this place is pretty ghetto, so what?

People that live in a ghetto are sensitive to you using the place they live in as an adjective describing something unfavorable, yes. I don't see why it's wrong for them to be sensitive to that. It's like saying someone who is good with their money is being a Jew. It's kinda offensive.

that actually kind of is what the word ghetto means, or at least one definition.
also while your point is still good, the definitions of words change, language evolves.

Ghetto on Wikipedia Ghetto on Dictionary.com Ghetto on Urban Dictionary
"word which rich white girls use to describe almost everything thats not clad with lilly polos and pearls."
No, I really do not see the offense in this word. LOL. So, I agree that this does not make you look like an asshole. Just a rich white girl that doesn't have any lilly polos and pearls in their life.

While you might have offended some people, you didn't do it on purpose
Intent is more important than the crime because anyone can make a mistake
So in my book, no, you're not an asshole

A few posts above you,
"People that live in a ghetto are sensitive to you using the place they live in as an adjective describing something unfavorable, yes."
It's wrong because of that, it's just not respectful.
I think mac lethal sums it up well,
"Ghetto aint a god damn adjective, think about the single inner city mothers that are having kids, and raising them in impoverished conditions, knowing that surbanites use it as a method of description, thats some nerve, ghetto means low quality, or something that does not meet the standard of the suburbs"

Grandma said watch out for the pennies and the dollars will watch out for you.. or something like that. Point is coins are money too.
Also I have pretty much no money. I'm in college, live with my parents and work only a couple hours a week -_-

i love the whole starbucks debate. tbh its like $1.35 extra for a much better product, i dont understand everyones aggression towards starbucks.
and i personally think the coffee at Mc Donald's is actually quite good, hence them doing thoes giveaways trying to convince people of this. i only know this because of those free giveaways.
as for you feeling like an asshole? fuck em, they work at Mc Donald's, if they had such high standards they shouldn't be working there.

Not everyone has the option to work wherever they want to. You're incredible naive if you believe that they have a choice.

Oh boy, if that makes you sad...reminds me of that episode of the simpsons where the native american sheds a single tear when he sees a piece of trash blow by in the wind...while behind him the entire town has been turned in to one giant garbage dump. He turns around as the screen fades to black and lets out a horrible scream.

I hope they spit in your coffee. I would have.
How did your coffee taste?
But I am sure you'll be more conscious of what you say now lol, don't worry it happens sometimes.
|
If I were to work at that McDonalds I would've thought you were an asshole too, and I'm as white as they get lol. The fact that you're basically complaining about having to get inferior coffee that isn't up to your standards is offensive for everyone that works, eats or drinks there.
Still, stuff like that happens every day and most people wouldn't give a shit, let alone make a blog about it. The fact that you're blogging about it saying that you're an asshole means that you do feel you've been offensive. So, be more aware of your surroundings before joking around next time (if you were joking o_O).

Calling something "ghetto coffee" is obviously different than saying "I don't particularly like McDonalds' coffee". I hope I don't need to explain that further.

That and also that you act like you're slumming because you go to Mcdonalds. It doesn't make you a tool but it's some evidence for it. We'd need more information for a definitive answer. Do you wear snow hats in the middle of summer? Do you force yourself to enjoy soccer so you can be cool and sophisticated? etc.

Do you go to a McDonalds and ask black people for medium black coffee? Are you vegan? Do you visit art exhibits out of free will?
