So recently my mind has been super cluttered, I'm forgetting things, my marks are ever so slightly dropping (enough to scare me), and I just feel generally distracted. And I think I've thought up a way to find some peace of mind.

I listen to that damn ipod way too much, to a point where I cannot walk anywhere without listening to it. And when I'm in transit for 3 hours a day, I think listening to music can be pretty draining. It's especially bad since for the last bunch of years, every moment has been filled with music playing on repeat in my head (I think there's a condition for that). And today I tried going sans music and it was nice, got to hear the sounds of the city, felt a bit of the old clarity.

So basically I'm going to do the worst scientific experiment of all time, chock full of extraneous variables, and see if cutting the music can get me back in action. Still playing my instruments though.

I like being able to shut out the talking people around me on buses etc. Turn on an audio book (or music) and I'm set. Also, it's hard to study with music. If I get too distracted I just listen to the brown noise from simplynoise.com. But you do need to take breaks. Especially if there is a sunset / sunrise / wonderful person / random amazing thing going on. Stop every thought in your head and just savor the moment. Life is unfolding in front of you. Theres a great book called "The power of now" by Eckhart Tolle. It deals a lot with finding peace of mind. I liked it a lot and would recommend it

Good luck. I don't think I listen to music as often as you do, but I'm very interested to hear (pun intended) how this goes.

i know how you feel op. sometimes music can auctally be a distraction more than making you concentrate.

i live in a small town, but when i travel to toronto on business. i never use an mp3 player. the sounds of the city are amazing and its soothing to be soaked into the sounds of the city. the sounds will be a extremely calming thing and most likely help you just feel more calm. music can be a stimulaint, and when you're mind is filled, music just makes things worse.

honestly just soak in the sounds. the only thing really annoying about transit in toronto is the awful squeel of the subways when they stop. but otherwise everything is soothing. i know sometimes i spend 8 hours in transit when i'm in toronto. i've never listened to music, but generally the sounds of the people and the sounds of the city make everything seem more majestic. you get a feeling of the world being a bigger place than you imagined. also when your in toronto, look at the history around you. take in the sights of the city on your travels. i find this helps you feel more calm in travels. espically if you're going through union, look around at the places there and the people. it amazing the stuff you will see

Right on the money, OP. Sometimes you've gotta take out your earphones and live in the world. Too easy these days to live in your own world. Unhealthy.
I have my ipod in at every opportunity but I make sure to spend a little time each day, while walking or on my break, to ground myself by listening to nothing at all.
