I am currently using an imperator, and it has cut itself out over various sc games but more importantly as an FPS player it skips when i react too fast to something, it could be to do with the fact im using a goliathus mousepad but from personal experience i would have to inform you to steer clear of it, shame i have to use it T.T.
The best setup i have ever used is the 518 on a steelseries QCK+, can't go wrong with that good ol setup x]

About the pad - dunno, got a cheap goliathus here and so far 2 years w/o any problems.
About the mouse - get something that's both comfortable and has good perfomance(how fast it'll go before it stops accelerating/starts skipping, whether it does weird stuff occasionally (philips twineye >.<), whether you can turn off drift control(probably gonna get some flame on me, but I can actually notice the difference), not the 583967dpi bullshit), not specs. How to check? ESReality are for real. The deathadder is missing from that page but they benchmarked it in their review. About the mx518 everybody keeps mentioning - totally worth it, only reason I ain't using it is that the MMB broke (excessive usage in SC2/blender3D/whatnot) and, well.... bulgarian warranty service >.< .

Deathadder + QcK Heavy is as close to perfection as I have found.

i looked into this for myself recently for a new laser mouse i bought. i hear the qck is good, and fairly cheap but i've heard that the traction on it can wear down fairly quickly in a few months.
it was close but i decided on the steelseries 4hd hard plastic mouse pad, which was specifically designed for laser mouses. it's 20 dollars, so it's medium priced and has a lot of cool features.
if they were in stock i would have gotten the icepad aka the experience i-2 glass mousepad, since it seemed that it was the most durable. i think the reason it's out of stock is because of their new aluminum one, but i didn't want to get that since it was too expensive and prone to finger prints.
hope that helped ^^

Thanks a lot for the advice guys.

I think I'm going to stick with the Imperator and the Qck mini. At 6.99, It won't be a problem if things go wrong.

Are you sure the mini is big enough? I had the medium sized QcK (Starcraft 2 version) and it was too small for me. Make sure you look at the dimensions and such.

I am an owner of 2 razer diamondbacks and 1 razer imperator. While the mice is very good overall, all my of them started at some point(between 3 and 9 months) randomly disconnecting from my computers. And trust me, its really frustrating to have your mouse disconnect in the middle of a game.
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.

All the stuff about mice being "gaming mice" and all their special features is BS. Go to a store and put your hand on each one. Find the one that best molds into your hand and buy it online. It's all about feeling good and comfortable.

that's the special thing with that exact mouse, IT FUCKING MOLDS INTO YOUR HAND. it's not just something you can get a comfy grip on, when you've got your hand on it it becomes a freaking part of your hand, THAT is how awesome it is.

I prefer cloth mousepads to hard ones (cheaper, more comfortable, don't destroy the mouse feet, etc), but I've heard people having issues with lazer mice and cloth mousepads. So I actually recommend a good optical mouse and a good mousepad.

I echo what has been said before: COMFORT > ALL. Try the mouse if at all possible, and then figure out which mouse is most comfortable.

I use a razer deathadder with a goliathus mousepad, and it works great, but you need to find the mouse for you.

Steelseries kinzu here.
Best mouse i've ever had ( tested deathadder, lolmx518, ime3.0, ), this one + a hard mat ( steelseries 4hd is perfect ) is the pure combo.

Definitely. The one I am using now is even smaller, you know those standard school/office ones?

Go with Logitech M100, thank me later and then buy 3 more for backup for less that some overhyped overpriced 'gaming' mouse.

Hey guys, I think it's time for me to upgrade my mouse and mouse pad

Since I am right handed, use a palm grip, and am currently using a logitech ergonomic mouse, I think I'm going to go with the Razer Imperator. (Objections can be raised now, lol.)

To go with the mouse however, I can't decide whether to go with the SteelSeries QcK mini or, as Razer tells me, the Sphex.

All I know is that the Imperator has a laser sensor, if that would make a differece. Also, the reason I would opt for a QcK mini instead of the regular one is because of size. I've been using those brandless mousepads that are 180x220x2mm for years now. Therefore, right now, I prefer the mini (but how good can it be at $7?) over the Sphex. If the Sphex is better though, I guess I could cope with its size.

Thanks for your help!

I have that exact setup that you are looking at and I cannot be happier. The mouse fits comfortably and glides very smoothly over the mouse pad. I definitely saw an improvement in my precision since I upgraded. Previously, I had a logitech mouse and some random hard gaming mouse pad.

My old mouse for reference:

Must've be the mousepad then, because the MX518 has almost flawless tracking. If it weren't for the mouse correction it'd be perfect. :p
