Just ranting for the day. Apologies in advance for spelling/ grammar mistakes, typing from my phone is no fun .
Anyways, I've wound up spending some time on other Starcraft fan sites and the official battle.net forums recently, because for some reason at my school TL got classified as "GPORN" (the fuck is that?) and got blocked by the schools firewall.
A recurring theme on these boards Seems to be the assumption that TL is just an elitist cesspool where boys with self esteem problems rule the banhammer.
And I mean, in a sense I think this could be true for some people (I'm always very curious when someones ban is reasoned by 'I have my reasons'). I'm not sure what it is, But at the same time, TL really is one of the most intelligent, thoughtful, and friendliest communities I've ever been a part of.
I really couldn't even begin to understand why people think that the moderation on this forum is a bad thing. 99% of the time when I see the red text under someones post It's easy to see what rule was broken, what part was out of line, or the post was just straight up dumb. I really don't post all too often, but when I do I do try and make it count.
And I mean, I really do appreciate the massive amount of work the mods do to keep the board clean and rid of (most) idiots. Going back to other communities right now is almost like getting culture shock. When I returned to WoW for a bit when cata was released I was absolutely disgusted by the community. Even what could be called the teamliquid of wow arena, arenajunkies.com, is virtually all trolls and assholes looking to ruin your day.
Anyways, my intention wasn't to suck up with this blog, so ill stop. I just wanted to highlight an extremely prevalent curiosity that for some reason is repeated in almost every off site TL related discussion I've seen so far.

"I have my reasons" is just an automated message whenever a mod doesn't feel like writing out the justifications.

GPORN: Shortened version of Gorilla Porn, i.e. There is a copious amount of Jinro Fan Art here.
On topic: I can kind of get where the elitist image comes from. You have some of the worlds best players here, and a lot of the frequent visitors to the site are ranked highly on the ladder. This can be off-putting to some people maybe. Another reason I could think of is that here, for the most part, you are responsible for your own losses in games. Take a normal post from the Bnet forums, whining about unit x, or race y, or OP strat z. If you make a post like that here, it's likely to get closed, keep trying and you're likely to get banned. The mods do a decent job keeping the forums clean :p. So you get people who are told that imbalance is not their problem and they need to improve, and they take it as a personal insult and label TL as elitists.
I've also noticed TL is quoted quite often when it comes down to factual disputes on other forums. TL is seen as a voice of authority, so this may be a contributing factor as well. People could see them as high and mighty because of a lot of the thorough analysis on the forums.
Also, I just thought of this. A lot of people on the Bnet forums came over from WoW it seems. An equivalent site to TL for WoW would probably be Elitist Jerks for arena PvP and serious PvE, who's name is quite self-explanatory. They seem to do a lot of analysis similar to what people on TL do, so it could be a carry over effect of people equating the two websites and their attitudes.
This is all hypothetical of course...

Teamliquid used to be such a relaxing and friendly place before SC2 rumors and the game got released. Due to the amount of users doubling or tripling due to sc2 it lost alot of community aspect since a hight percentage of the new users were really not that great. I'm sure most of the users from other forums are there because they been banned from tl.

TL doesn't have a high tolerance for idiocy.

Maybe they saw the Nada's Body thread.... lol.

Hmm during my stint with WoW over the summer I felt that elitistjerks was a stuffier environment. At least in creating spreadsheet formulas and general PvE number crunching, the atmosphere felt rather serious and sterile. On the other hand, arenajunkies held nonsense simply because it focused on competition in a game whose competitive tradition has no semblance of manner. I don't know how or if the noble BW chivalry carried over to the SC2 crowd, but I'm glad people at TL talk about manner as a serious discussion topic. In every other game, bad manner is just a fact of life and you're all sorts of a terrible newb if you'd like to contest it.
But yeah, Team Liquid is really something special in the world of gaming.

So wheres the "the World" part?

While TL isnt perfect and the mods might appear to be overly strict, its the best thing the SC community has and it sure as hell beats the crap out of all the other sites!

Basically if you are prepared to engage your brain before bashing out a post then you're going to be fine on TL. But if you don't, then you're going to get banned and repeatedly banned until you improve. Some people don't like that they can't shit all over this website heh.

As someone who (very pretentiously) believes that he has seen a good number of online communities, I can say that Team Liquid is by far the most mannered/constructive/disciplined.
It's quite a contrast, because often I bounce around between 4chan /a/ (meh), /g/ (crap), /r9k/ (lol), XtremeSystems (also a great place). (I'm the Loser777 there)
Places I used to be active on: bwhacks.com (you can guess what that stands for LOL), gamethreat.net (Also the Loser777 there lol) tom's hardware forums (for a short bit)
To be honest, if the moderation at TL weren't what it is... the amount of crap would just be ridiculous. At bwhacks.com, with a community size just a fraction of what TL is, the amount of garbage/flame/trollan is unthinkable compared with what TL has. I appreciate this community and it doesn't have to 100% adhere to what I see fit. I'm more than happy with what's going on here after having experienced the bottom of the barrel.

Despite TL being dumbed down a bit by the influx of new SC2 players, I'm sure all of the new users will eventually catch onto the level of maturity and intelligence that made the BW community so well respected amongst forum goers. Even with the plethora of poor posts and balance whining in the SC2 section and especially the Live Reports, TL is still worlds above any other online community.
I used to browse the official Command and Conquer forums up until after C&C4 was released, and I have concluded that official forums are never the place for mature, intelligent discussions.
Reddit is also quite awesome.

TL is the first online community that I have ever regularly participated in. It truly is a diamond in the rough of the intersludge.
