So this weak I was scheduled 36.5 hours. I am part-time. I take a co-workers shift for today, which is an 8 hour shift, so I would have been at 44.5 hours. I walk in today and my supervisor tells me not to clock in until 3pm when the shift was for 1-9pm. The reason is because I would be 3 hours overtime and they would have to pay me time and a half.I told him I do not have a ride to bring me back and forth to work all day. He said "You can't just wait in the break room until 3?" Are you fucking kidding me? How the hell can you ask an employee to wait 2 hours in the break room? It is not my fault they did not realize I would go into overtime because I took a shift. We let them know and they said it was ok, they should have went over the hours. Anyway, I told him I will either work now or I am going home. They sent me home.

What's fucked up about the situation is that every full-time employee in there right now is getting payed time and a half because it is New Years Day. They would have to pay me time and a half for like 3 hours if they let me just work the shift.

sucks, man...I hear part-timers get this type of treatment way too often. I guess the best you could have done was to go home, relax, and enjoy your new year's the best you could...

Yea im guessing you work in a department store or grocery store or something? Managers and the "higher-ups" in these types of stores seriously don't give a fuck about any of their employees, expecially if they're young. I've worked at the same grocery for over 3 years and the store manager still treats me like a piece of shit. You should have probably just went home after he said to wait around, not like they can do anything about that.

That seems pretty stupid. I worked in a grocery store for a while back in high school. I wanted maybe 12-16 hours a week, so the deli manager decided to give me 36 for like a month long gauntlet. Then he ended it with a friday 5-11, saturday 2-11, sunday 2-11, monday 5-11, patch for 2 weeks. So I changed my hours, so I wouldn't work until 11 on weekdays, and a request to not work so many hours, so the guy started only giving me one 5 hour shift a week. Part-timers aren't treated so well haha.

I don't mind the hours, it's just fucked up what they did today. How the hell can you tell an employee to wait 2 hours in the break room before a shift?

Did they know you were taking your friends shifts? I know in my workplace they won't allow us to take upon an extra shift if it means putting us overtime, except in really rare circumstances. If you asked a supervisor about it they probably would have told you to just come in at 3, or you're not allowed to take the shift >.<

im sorry man looks like system wins again this time. most companies have a no OT for non-regular workers. getting the extra time through your coworkers shift meant that you will have to OT if they still follow your schedule, which is why they had to shave off the 2 hours. how they did it is immaterial. you could have asked for an early leave instead, say 1-7?

lesson here is always read the company manual. im sure it gave you time to enjoy the new year tho. get over it and welcome the new year with a fresh start!

Total BS by the employer, unless they assume you will keep track of your own hours and not agree to cover shifts that would put you into overtime...but like you said, the people you spoke to should have been on top of that.

Sorry to hear about this but this kind of shit is what you can expect when you are a part time worker. I'm a part time worker myself and my employer can call att 06.30 am and ask if a can work at 7 am, I can work 20 hours one week and 50-60 hours the next week. You just have to put up with it or else they might not call you at all :/

Next time be more careful so you don't accidentally get overtime hours because most people don't like that. Also when they tell you to stay 2 hours in the break room just eat it and ask the manager or supervisor if next time they could call you instead or stop you from switching into a shift that gives you overtime.

As long as you act apologetic and at fault they'll feel 100x more empathy towards you and next time they will either try and bend the rules or help you avoid the situation altogether.

That's what I would do (I've spent about 4 years in retail)

You should always figure out how to avoid overtime on your schedule ahead of time. Before you even came into work it would've been a good idea to ask whether they want you to come in 2 hours late or leave 2 hours early. Just assume 100% of the time that they don't want you doing overtime unless they specifically say "do overtime"/
