get this, the directions read: Microwave on high for 15 minutes
wtf I'm not trying to dry my laundry. This thing is gonna be radioactive or something? I'm honestly kind of worries because nothing should be in a microwave that long =\

Thing is huge. It even says on the box it's a pound of food:

You just said the reason, its a WHOLE POUND of food, thats why it takes 15 minutes. You don't want the center to be cold or even frozen still do you?

That's pretty standard for chicken pot pies that are frozen, Marie Callendar's ones are about that long too. I reccommend the oven though, it comes out better. I've microwaved them before for that long though, it's fine.

It needs to be in there longer so the heat can reach all the way inside the potpie. Otherwise you're going to be biting into a cold frozen center.

Trust me, I've tried it

I'd recommend using whatever the oven settings are, it's going to be mushy and gross and not nearly as enjoyable in the microwave :[ but that doesn't seem wrong to microwave that long it won't be radioactive.

There's some gravy and stuff spewing out the top and it SOUNDS like it's about to explode. I'd call the Hungry Man hotline but I'm sure they'd tell me it's all completely normal. And it still has 10 minutes to go. *is scared*

I definitely came into this thread (from the sidebar) expecting this to be about massacring chickens with a shotgun or about kilograms of cocaine.
Needless to say, i'm disappointed.
But at least you try and make boring parts of your life exciting. Wish I was that charismatic.

Well, roughly speaking, if we idealized your pie to being water, that would be roughly 454g of water, meaning that water, with its heat capacity of 4.184/4.186J/g°C would need roughly 3.80x10^5 Joules to get the contents to 200°C + another 1.51x10^5 Joules to convert it from ice to water. Assuming your microwaves outputs 1000W or 1000J/s, that's 531 seconds, or almost 9 minutes. Throw in the fact that microwaving food is going to bring in substantive losses of heat and other variables, and you've got 15 minutes.

It's 15 minutes because of its shape. If you dump it on a plate and break it up, you probably only need 5 minutes tops.

wtf you people are taking away all of the fun. And what's the fun in eating a pie if it's not shaped like a god damn pie?! I'm not breaking it up to save time, energy, the planet etc...
Also they should just put all that math for the directions, it'd go over a lot easier.

Even just frozen vegetables have instructions to microwave for 6+ minutes depending on the power of the microwave. I have a fairly decent microwave, and sometimes they even come out really cold still.

Turkey pot pies have even more ingredients, especially the turkey, which probably requires the most time to cook out of the whole thing. And Turkey isn't like red meat, where you can eat them "medium." It has to be fully cooked or you can get sick.

A paper I read voted these microwavable pot pies #1 on their list of things not to eat. May contain a whole days worth of sodium in just one serving. Usually HALF of a pie! But no one only eats half, lol.

You people need to stop ruining the fun in eating these 10 minute meals. We all know they aren't healthy, but god damn do they taste good. Hot pockets? More like fucking nerd pockets. What kind of nerd doesn't eat those things? Speaking of which, I haven't had one in about 2 weeks. I'm pretty sure that's a nerd sin.

The microwave radiation only goes about 2cm deep, so only the surface/bottom is going to be heated. From there, the heat has to dissipate into the center by itself (and a lot will dissipate into the air instead), that's why it takes so long.

My advice, if it says to microwave, always put it in the oven, only thing I microwave nowadays are the frozen burritos, but shit like the TV dinners, they may take a longass time but they will be much better from the oven, especially the Hungry Man Dinners.

Using a microwave to activate an object is very unlikely. You can determine the wavelength of the microwaves by putting marshmallows in and measuring the distance between the resulting peaks. If you then work out the energy carried by the EM waves, you'll begin to understand how microwaves actually work.

Essentially, microwaves heat up food by exciting electrons and vibrating molecules, specifically water. These are processes on the atomic and molecular scale. There is nowhere near enough energy to induce a nuclear reaction which is what you would need to make your food "radioactive".

The term "nuke" your food is very misleading.

Am I the only on who noticed that the pie in the picture is actually a turkey pot pie, despite the thread title's claim? That changes everything...

Unless its just some stock photo and not one the OP took.

I'd say to oven anything that'd take over 10 minutes in a microwave. Ovens are more cost/time efficient vs a microwave when large amounts of food are considered.

Ovens also make stuff taste a lot better than microwaves, since microwaves leave the food mushy, while ovens make it crispy.

We should have a contest on the longest use of a microwave. I got 23 minutes once.

Quality blog, made me chuckle. 5/5.

Yeah I don't microwave stuff that takes ages... I throw it in the oven at that point.

I microwave stuff to quickly defrost and then i toss it in a toaster of some sort. An example would be a jamaican patty- nuke for 45 seconds, toss in a toaster/oven for a couple of minutes. Way better than waiting ages for the toaster/oven to defrost and do its thang.
MBC/Liquid/TSM always.

I seem to recall hearing that modern microwaves don't have fixed positions for the maximum constructive interference anymore like the old ones used to (and that's not taking into account the annoyance of the rotating dish for conducting this experiment.
