Here is what I think about the Protoss race, my main race.
What I love about P:
1. Forcefields, the coolest and most skillful spell in the game.
2. Gateway units have fun micro, using the zealots to tank, keeping stalkers from running ahead.
3. Warpgates are fun and easy to use.
4. Blink micro
What really bums me out about P:
1. I feel like I have no viable harass option, harassing is like the best part of SC.
2. I feel like I have very few "poking" options. With P you are either fully engaged or nothing. You cannot outrun stimmed bio, you cannot disengage from marauders, You cannot run away from lings. This limits engagements to one big battle.
I played BW quite a bit, and its something I miss alot from that game. Remember when you could sit a few lots or goons outside a zergs nat, and if they came out with anything you could just walk back to your base without them raping you along the way? Running away was simple, and It allowed you to move around the map with some units without risking losing everything. If I saw an exposed 3rd I could move in with some units and shoot it a bit before running away. In SC2 my "poking" force is gonna get reamed by faster units while trying to run no matter how out of position their main army is.
P was the king of harass in BW, Stormdrops were so good, DT's were awesome because it didn't notify your opponent that their drones were getting raped, reavers were like siege tanks combined with banelings combined with russian roulette. It makes me sad playing SC2 to not have these capabilities.
On the plus side, this makes it kind of exciting to wait for the P expansion, as I really think a harass option for P is the only obvious thing any of the races are missing. But thats in a long, long, time.
I've tried doing phoenix play, but I just really dislike moving into the stargate tech which is such a gamble, and pheonixes are just so limited in the amount of damage they can cause because of requiring energy to even hit drones. I mean, there's a reason phoenix play is so rare.
I'll keep playing P, but its just a bummer that basically a whole primary aspect of the game (harass), I barely ever get to do.
EDIT: Why is the warp prism so goddamn pussy? Its like a wraith with some sort of terrible wasting disease....Maybe if blizz like tripled its health we could see some cool drop play.

Many of these reasons are why I'm practicing Terran now...

Actually, you can unengage as a Protoss. Just cut your enemy off with forcefields and kill whatever part of the army you severed then back off.
But you are right that Protoss doesn't have much harassing options besides late game storm drops and maybe Void rays. If there weren't Tanks in SC2 i'd play Protoss as my main race since they have the most fun army compositions

Chances are, you already used up your energy on forcefield/GS in the beginning of the battle :/ Yeah, i went back to zerg after frustration with protoss (though, i played zerg in beta and only switched when i saw how horrible tvz used to be)

Most Protosses i see (even at pro levels) spam ridiculous amounts of forcefields in battles, if they learned to be more energy effective with their sentries i bet you can have both enough energy for the actual battle and enough to retreat.
|
edit: ^yeah the spamming is a problem for me aswell, you have to be so fast sometimes, it's not easy to do it right so you don't have clustered up FF's
I started building a warp prism pretty early on (after 1-2 immortals) and load it with 2 immortals/4 stalker and just drop somewhere with 4-8 chargelots (depending on how late the game is and how many gates I have by then) that's pretty much the only harrass I see apart from void rays but that's shut down pretty fast So yeah, harrass is not a strength of the Protoss
ps: I wouldn't recommend forgetting all about your warp prism T.T (and don't show it to the opponent because then he's going to expect it because the warp prism is not often seen

After practising my VR micro all day yesterday, I have a feeling we might be able to convert them into the new Mutalisk

Really? Before speed?
This I have to see!
...on paper voids are like the worst harass unit imaginable.

You know how easy it is for collosus to kite bio units?? And why cant u run away from a zerg roach hydra army? they're so slow...You'd really hate Sc1 TvP lol

You can cause a lot of damage to a Terrans marines through forcing stims/whittling down their hp - plus they kill scvs ridiculously fast. Too bad turrets shut them down so hard

I have always thunk that phoenixes would be the new sexy for protoss. They are just so good in terms of harassment. At least compared to VRs.

Bio moves at 3.375 (stimmed), collossi move at 2.25.
I think you mean collossi can do some step micro with a bunch of gateway units blocking for them. They cannot kite bio, by definition you cannot kite a unit thats faster than you...good luck poking with collossi without getting caught.
Roaches move at 3 upgraded and not on creep. Your fastest unit (stalkers), move at 2.95, zealots (upped) move at 2.75. So even in ideal circumstances off creep you give roaches free hits on all of your units, if you continue to run then your collossi and HT fall out of your blob and get sniped.
But this isn't the problem, the problem is that people build speedlings, which move at 4.7 off creep, they cut you off and force the engagment wherever the Z wants, so you better be ready. Also, a good Z will creep spread, this makes all of their units even more mobile than yours.
So yeah, roach/hydra is slow compared to mutaling into roach (which is the most common build I see on ladder), but even that is faster than P even off of creep.
SC1 TvP? Yeah, played alot of that actually, you had tons of options to poke in that matchup.
Vultures bro.
Zeal/goon is faster than tank, so you could poke in with dragoons, retreat and outrun the tanks, and while you still take hits from vultures, they do almost no damage to goons so it didn't matter. Also, unsieged tanks are shit, so this gave you great windows to harass and book it before they can siege up.

This, this, this, to the max. I love going 2 early stalkers because I can poke at the beginning of the game, when stalkers are the fastest units. But that very, very quickly becomes false, and you're left with a big ball that can only push when the time is right.
