These aren't popular now, but back in those days (early 90s), gamebooks were all the rage. Anyone read them? I remember the immense joy I got from reading them and some of them were so good that they make great reading even now:

In particular, a couple really stand out in my memory. Create of Havoc by Steve Jackson:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creature_of_Havoc

Heart of Ice by Dave Morris:
http://mirabilis-yearofwonders.blogspot.com/2010/01/best-gamebook-ever-discover-for.html

Dave Morris has been kind enough of release an e-book of the Heart of Ice (see the link). I still have my copy of the Heart of Ice; it's in a tattered condition due to the countless hours spent reading and re-reading it. My Creature of Havoc copy has sadly been lost

They even made an iphone app for Create of Havoc!

Is this the 'choose your own adventure' thing?

Yeah, it's a "choose your own adventure" concept. But don't confuse it with the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series, the Fighting Fantasy, Lone Wolf and Virtual Reality series were much better!

Oh man, i used to have so many of these. Picked like 15+ up at a car boot sale. Some of them were insanely tough also! My friend got one of them on his iPhone. Warlock at firetop mountain i think ? Cool stuff.

The Fabled Lands series is somewhere online, like 8 books. Amazing stuff, i have the collection and re-read them so much as a kid. I think Dave Morris was a co-author on them

Yeah, fighting fantasy books were awesome. Later gamebooks had more streamlined and frankly better combat systems but for sheer variety you can't beat the FF books. The most memorable ones for me are the ones that slightly changed the format, like Robot Commando where you went about getting different mechs that you fought in, or The Legend of Zagor where you could pick from the 4 different classes at the start of the book and it just felt epic. Then you have Creature of Havoc which was a pain because of all the decoding you had to do! I guess I could go on for a while with these because there are so many I remember for different aspects.

Fabled lands app is here: http://flapp.sourceforge.net/
Great stuff, kinda feels like playing oblivion in text form.

Some of the Lone Wolf books have also been put online here. There is also an app to put them on your DS if you have a flashcart floating about. Kinda funny how it takes 5 minutes to play instead of an hour when you put it in this digital format.

I've read Robot Commando as well and that was an awesome book. Other FF books that I really enjoyed are Siege of Sardath, Rebel Planet, Tower of Destruction. There must be more, but I've forgotten their names

Does Azzur refer to Lord Azzur in Port Blacksand?

Busted....I was a HUGE fan of these books when I was a kid. I was more partial to The Way of the Tiger, however, and still read them on the can occasionally.

Just had a go at Heart of Ice, and appropriately froze to death. It's good, but I do prefer the larger scale of the Fabled lands books. You had six to go between, the story and artwork was great, and it was just epic.

Apparently they're re-releasing them this Christmas, and if they're successful, then they're going to write the other 6 which were never published. It would make me so happy if this happened...I'd love to play the whole 12 book series.
It is what you read when you don't have to that determines what you will be when you can't help it.
