SF4 on the PC

I know next to nothing about the fighting game scene, but really want to get involved in it after sporadically watching some SF4 videos on youtube and watching goatrope play third strike. My only experience with fighting games is something around tekken 3 or 4 on the ps2, playing very casually.

So i was thinking about getting a fighting stick(?) and just playing it on the PC, but im not sure if there is really any sort of PC fighting game community. Would i have to get an xbox to get the proper experience?

From what I understand, the majority of the scene exists on console (and mostly xbox at that). For fighting games, i don't really understand why there is no cross-platform support :/ (or maybe there is, i have no idea )

I am one of the lonely SF4 on PC owners, please get it as I have no one to play against thus no inclination to play. Fighting games are so boring with no friends.

I'm really bad btw, so yeah...

Super SF4 isn't out for the PC and probably won't ever be, so we're stuck playing the original version. I think you can still find games but you'll miss out on any kind of tournament community and a much better game.

yeah if you want to get into the scene you should probably play Super SF4... which is out only for arcade/ps3/xbox360. The original SF4 is still a good game, but know that you're not playing the latest version of the game.

So xbox it is for me then, xbox is around £150 with a fighting stick being around £40 and SF4 and SSF4 being £15. Would i need to get both SF4 and SSF4 or just the latter?

lame -_-

Also, I would hold out on buying a stick because:
1. You may not stick (pun intended) with the game, therefore getting a stick will be a waste
2. A controller is probably better than a cheap stick ~$60

Obviously the best option is PC

The proper online ssf4 experience is on xbox for sure. But iIf you like 3S, you can try that (and some other fighters like ST) on GGPO (a pc matchmaker thing) for free. There's other PC clients like 2dfighter, but I don't have any experience with them.

I see no reason to get vanilla SF4 at this stage though. It's like expecting to play vanilla sc1.

Really though, try to find some people from your area in the SRK regional matchmaking section and just play with those guys for a while. That way, you'll meet the local people (which matters 10000x more for fighters than it would for sc) and be able to play on the new version, on a stick, for free! If you enjoy it, you can stick with it.

Also, if youre learning SSF4, pick an easy charge character to start with. Guile, Balrog, Honda, Bison, Blanka are all pretty good learning chars. Easy anti airs, relatively basic game plans, and charging forces you to hold back which forces you to block, and blocking is the most important aspect of every fighter.

You wouldn't spend a ton of money on sc gear when you're a bronze player, I see no reason drop so much cash on fighters right at the start =P

Most important part is to come hang out with us in the sf4 / fighting games thread once you do start playing !

If your going to play a fighting game super smash bros melee is the way to go its probably one of the most skilled games in the world also under sc obviously. You might want to play brawl its worse but ssbm is dying unfortunatley like broodwar

I play SF4 on the PC only because I don't really want to have to buy a TV and PS3/Xbox just for SSF4 (living in college residence). I have a PS3 and SSF4 at home back in Bahrain but I'm living in Canada now for college so I wasn't able to bring them over

I play with a stick and even though it isn't the best way to practice, SF4 on PC is a decent substitute I find. I meetup with friends every week to play SSF4. If you're like me and don't want to buy a console just for SSF4, PC SF4 is alright provided you can run it smoothly (any lag is bad lag).

For a stick, if it's your first one, I recommend Hori's Arcade Fighting Stick 3. Really good stick for it's price (I'm new to sticks too but at least this is what my veteran friends tell me XD. (Just so you know though, it's compatible with PS3 and PC but not PS2 and I'm not sure about Xbox)

I strongly disagree with this comparison. Although SF4 is definitely not the same as SSF4 and is not a perfect substitute for it, it is a decent starting point. By this I mean, assuming you don't choose to play with one of the ten added characters in SSF4 or use one of the new Ultra combos, you can at least practice your chars almost the same way. For example, you could play with Ryu and still practice the same combos such as shoryu > FADC> U1 and get that movement in your muscle memory. Although you won't be able to practice Ryu as well as a person who practices on SSF4, it will only be a minor difference when you play against him (although with the arrival of AE, I will be expecting the difference to increase).

However when it comes to Vanilla SC1 and BW, the added units change the game itself completely and I assume anyone on TL will be able to agree with this. Imagine SC1 without Medics, DTs, Corsairs, Lurkers, etc.

I understand why you compare the 2 games, but I still feel like the difference from vanilla to expansion is a LOT greater in SC-BW.

LOL, good one.

Anyway, OP, if you want to get into the tournament scene you need to play Super SF4 which is only on consoles at the moment (and may or may not ever be on PC). If you want to play casually you can pick up PC version, but you're not going to find a lot of competition. There are holdouts, though, if you check the SF4 forum on Shoryuken you can find people in you area to play against.

Regarding a stick, that's up to you. Good pad players are showing up all over these days. But IMO you'll be at a long-term advantage if you learn on a stick. It's the interface fighting games are designed for. Of course, you can always switch to stick once you're comfortable with fighting games and are sure it's worth spending the money.

Not sure I agree with this (as a Bison player myself). Newbie charge char players tend to become obsessed with holding downback and making sure they have charge, then wonder why they're having such a hard time with spacing/zoning and setting up offense.

Not saying he shouldn't start with a charge char, but he shouldn't use a charge char just because he's a newbie. There are better characters to learn fundamentals with IMO.
