All my friends seem to think that Starcraft is easy. You don't need to work at it. They are wrong! You do need to work at it. My friend wanted to learn how to get better at starcraft. Of course then when he thought he was good enough to play against me, and I utterly destroyed him, he gave up. I wanted him to actually get good, but he thought it was going to be easy. It really isn't that easy. Kind of a pointless blog I know, but sort of wanted to vent about that. I don't know too many people IRL that plays Starcraft. It would have been cool to have a friend that would play Starcraft with me.

Well if they're not good players then they're wrong?

I thought "than" in headline was out of pun.
But yeah, SC takes a lot of practice and consistency (just see idra). Tell your mates to watch some pro gamers replay.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough... They think that it takes no effort to get good at this game. They try and play it, because they think it takes no effort, and when they get absolutely crushed they hate it. Which is really kind of stupid, I think that they should really give it a chance.

Make him watch VODs since there are many games for people to watch on youtube. If this is EC2 then its really easy to find someone who casts games....If its BW then I suggest Korean commentary but if he insists on English commentary look for Moletrap,Klazart,NukeTheStars,RanshinDA and every single game uploaded on VioleTAK.
VODS generate interest to continue to play the game.

Have him play starcraft 2 first then play sc1
|
Are we talking BW or SC2?
BW has a larger learning curve because mechanics can only be gained over time, and it's more APM/multitasking dependent compared to SC2. SC2 is still quite hard for the average gamer/casual player, though.

tell him that the fun part about starcraft isnt becos of it's simplicity =D

i dont get how people can enjoy beating a game that's easy. =\ if you watch a movie you always get to the ending
|
It's both, I made him play both. And can a mod fix the title... I had like 12 hours of sleep so I feel kind of wonky, never having had that much sleep before. He also thinks that it's kind of stupid that there are progamers and stuff, I did make him sit through a few VODs. He was sort of interested. I guess after I played against him, just so I could see what level of play he was at, and him losing made him kind of sad.

Well it's the same with many things, people look at it and think "I could do that", but it's actually way harder than it looks.
A lot of people are really bad at getting others into the game though. They say stuff like "watch these VODs, download these replays, memorise these build orders, play 1000 games."
Sure that's what they have to do to get good, but newbies should be treated more like young children, you get them interested and self-motivated by teaching them in a more casual way before slamming 20 textbooks in front of them.

It's amazing how easy it is for people to understand how difficult starcraft is if they watch you play. Not like a replay, but have them sit behind/next to you and talk to them about the game while you're playing. As long as you are kind of fast and decent at sc then they'll understand after 1 game how hard it is.
At least that's how it is with everyone I've shown starcraft to.

It took awhile to get my friends into the whole starcraft scene as well but my general excitement and enthusiasm to watch live streams, tournaments, and VOD's forced them to pay attention. Then when SC2 came out, I just had to get them interested in laddering. They all don't play a lot, some more than others, but they all now watch live streams, VOD's, and are really into the whole e-sports scene with the GSL, IEM, HDH, and MLG tournaments.
EDIT: Like the poster said above me, getting them to watch you play will help a lot. I have a lot of LAN's at my house and them seeing me play, or watch sc / sc2 all the time helped a lot.

I didn't actually go like, "WATCH THESE GAMES AND YOU WILL LEARN!!!".
He had a lot of troubles with macro, or even A-moving. I kept trying to get him to A-move but he just wouldn't. He would right click separate units and some of his units would just stand there while the front 2 shot the zerglings or something.

why do you play against him play some 2v2s and such it'll be much funner try not to turn everything into a competition between you guys

All my friends think SC is too hard, they think it's work rather than fun and never play :/

Haha there is a certain amount of knowledge required to realize that your absolutely terrible at a game. My friends and I all used to think we were great until I discovered TL and PGT and starting to learn how to actually play the game.
