Well thats my question for ya. Should I pick up on bw? like start playing it seriously (i played the campaign 3 times, 2 times with cheats ) and play on iccup for example. Is it too late and will I get killed by D- players? i really, really suck at bw and need serious training to compete at d level (yeah thats how bad i am). i think its never too late but it kinda seems like a case of: why wold i bother? i got testweek coming up (next week) so i have to study my balls/brains out and i dont know if i have spare time to train seriously. but bw seems really fun to play competitively, so should i bother? oh, and can somebody give me some tips on how to train for competitive bw and how i play on iccup ie. btw, i gotta buy bw again, i lost my copy oh and what should my nickname be? im thinking of KaZuJiN because im a huge tekken fan and kazuya and jin are my fav characters, anybody know a better nickname? or the same nickname but with other letters or signs or something?

thanks tl!

It's not too late to pick up BW, but the ICCUP field is really, really hard. Especially now that a ton of people switched over to SC2.

As far as "training" goes, you can watch VODS/check up on liquidpedia for play styles and builds. That being said, prepare yourself for a beating.

Well if you enjoy playing BW then I would say go for it. However if you aslo enjoy SC2 you might as well devote your time to SC2.
We know nothing.

@ graham, i watch proleague/msl/osl vods since 2008/2009, and by 'i watch' i mean like every game. thx for the advice

@ amestir, lol i dont have a good enough pc for sc2 and no money to buy one (being a poor 15year old sucks imo) so yeah if i had sc2 i would defenitely play sc 2 but as a spectator sport sc2 is pretty goddamn boring. yes goddamn, cause thats just how boring it is. bw for life!

Let's see if I can answer your post in a more organized fashion than it is written.

Yes, you should start playing broodwar competitively if you want to. If it's simply for your enjoyment, then go ahead and dive into iccup. You probably will be a D- player for a while as you practice to get better. I would suggest watching replays from the replay section to learn some builds, or VODs of pros, and then copying their build orders. Start with something standard for whatever your race is. (Really rough examples. Probably not the most standard either: 3 hatch muta ZvT, 5 hatch hydra ZvP, one hatch mutas ZvZ, 1 rax FE TvZ, siege FE TvP, 2 fact TvT, 1 gate robo PvT, fe PvZ, 1 gate robo PvP)

Start playing when you have the time. There is no rush.

Make whatever nickname you want.

You don't need to buy another copy because playing on iccup doesn't require it.

Have fun!

If you have the time for it sure. I know even when I was first starting out and went like 3-42 or something I still had a good time, getting things right and imporving feels awesome, as does any of those initial wins. Yes, if all you have done is play the campaign you'll get stomped pretty often by D and probably D- players, but as long as your aware of that and just having fun with the game and the proces of improvement it shouldn't be too bad.

As far as practicing I would definitly advise learning 3 standard builds for whatever race you pick, and practice them a few times in single player so you have a framework to go with. If you haven't watched much BW and don't have any idea for how each MU is supposed to play out it probbably wouldn't hurt to read a brief overview or whats some pro games of each of your three MU to get a very general sense of what you should be trying to do.

If your goal is to get better focus on executing your build well and macroing. Might not be for everyone but I ended up playing about 50 games against AI with my only goal being to constantly make workers, expand, and keep my money below 500 at all times. If I couldn't micro or do anything else that was fine, I just wanted to develop a sense of how to macro, get used to supply timings, etc. After I did that I stopped getting stomped by D- players and was able to hover around like 900-1000 D.

I'm going to teach a friend of mine how to play hunters next week or so. It's never too late, just be mentally prepared to get your ass handled too you for a couple of months.

Also it's kinda tricky too find good replays to learn from. The ones in the replay section here are more entertaining than educational. If you can find a rep-pack from a good player laddering that's much much better. Watch the games were he wins in under 10minutes and copy those builds.

Other than that, focus on being fast and hotkey buildings.

Good luck.

Since BW now has an even more niche following than before, ICCup is going to be hard. A D- player with a decent understanding of a game will still devastate a newbie. This is because D- doesn't immediately translate into Bronze in SC2.

In SC2, D- is basically high plat/diamond), and everyone below that are people still trying to get the hang of RTS and SC2 concepts. ICCup already had a niche following before and had fairly experienced gamers even if the rank didn't reflect it. That's because you literally had pro players absolutely at the top at A+.

Yeah, you will probably lose like 500 games and then maybe start winning some, seriously. Its tough, but its never too late for BW ^_^

The best advice i can give you is that dont overanalyze your shit, 90% of your time should go into playing imo, maybe 10% of watching replays when you dont have any clue why you lost. Its all about a proper build order and macro.

Also, if you want to get better fast just practice 1 match up a time 1 build a time, like play hundreds of barracks fast expansion TvZ's and dont mess around, just try to have a solid game all the time. I'd say everything from D to B is all about a proper build and good macro.

You will probably never reach B level though, maybe if you're super serious about this and willing to play a shit load of games and practice every day for months.

Can't you dl it off iccup instead of buying? I don't know if that helps, but it's worth knowing. You'll only be able to play LAN and the ladder, though. Personally, I find BW to be the most fun per minute anyone can have playing video games (outside of hanging out with friends and playing casually) and I enjoy playing a game or two each week even though I don't have time to keep in form.

Winning around 10min means that the player used a strategy that worked vs a good opponent. Cheese is winning under 5minutes. Longer games as in our replay section are entertaining and there is always something to learn from lategame play, but you should learn what strategys wins the game and figure out why.

10minutes is plenty of time in a game and a average game of sc is around 15minutes. I doubt that good players are planning out ahead that they are going to win the game after 30min with Arbiter+recall. On the other hand I guess you can watch longer games from a players rep-pack to see why the game did not end in under 10minutes.
