I am long-time community contributor and moderator for a large company in the Philippines, and I've been reading posts by people there recently. I now realize that the company is "damaged goods" on one level, but I am also ticked off that since there is already that existing image, that they can act like absolute dumb asses.
I've noticed that post quality has degraded abysmally since I started there around half a decade ago. Luckily, nobody knows or has the gall to turn it into a 4chan clone. *oh the horror*
Also, I am NOT a paid employee there; i.e. I am essentially the equivalent of a TL Banling, but I can wield considerable influence with regards to any forum changes that will happen.
Now to my question: How do you convert these people from being completely retarded posters who flame each other about lack of fairness at every opportunity to at least be semi constructive people? I cannot be there 24/7, and I have nearly no back-up on enforcement.
I hate being stuck in this, but I love laying the banhammer on an idiot. It's the best form of destressing.

I am sorry what?
You can report posts that you feel violate TL rules to moderators.

Lead by example is one of the best methods. Why don't you post a long, well-thought out post about the subject. And make a couple "examples" from the first few people who don't get how serious to take the subject. It helps if one of them is a long time member.

Silly Germans don't read the whole post...

You aren't giving much information to work with. This is a company forum so why not change company policy to punish people for misbehaving?

I wanted to report this person saying that this user generally doesn't read the threads before he responds but the report function was disabled for this users account.
What do I do in that case?

Sorry OP, my bad. Note to self: Don't operate heavy machinery or TL when sleep deprived.

The reason why there are trolls have been addressed by penny arcade a few years ago:
There will always be trolls

We can spin it off, kind of give it a catchy name...IRL Name? Real Name?
*snaps fingers*
REAL ID! It's brilliant! A clever use of "Real Name" and "Posting ID"
PERFECT!

I am SOOO quoting this. And I do PM someone with a red icon when I see bad stuff.
ETT/Frozen:
The company is in essence outsourcing its community moderation to a small group of people they can trust since they're swamped with work internally. I'm under an NDA so I can't publicly say which company this is and what forum/s I work in. However, from a single specific forum I specialize in, cost considerations have led them to rolling out a merger of the different forums, which will involve a wipe in the user accounts and posts of every person. That would provide me with the venue to actually do what ETT advises. I feel that the company's weakness is actually in PR and in marketing; their technical capabilities have evolved greatly since their founding half a decade ago (and I've been a major community member since that time... no wonder). I still have minor issues with their competence, but I know very well that they REALLY NEED to work on that PR.
Excludos:
I know trolls won't go away, but at the very least I'd like to start turning the place around and make it TL-like in the sense that it's inhospitable for stupid/noobish people who can't articulate well.
Oh by the way, I heard that Facebook Connect would be used on the forum... damnit it's a short step away from RealID. I could actually turn that to my advantage. > Makes it easier to check out people then Muhaha.

Yeah, the SC2 forum has become a mess, but I guess there is nothing we can do about it. There are shitload of people that doesnt know SC:BW or TL exist before SC2. Time has change -_-.
|
How about making it easier to report someone? As of right now (as far as I know) you have to find a moderator and pm him the name of the troll and the post..thats more work than just clicking a button.
I realize this means more work for the moderators as well (since it will undoubtedly be misused), but it would do wonders for making TL just a tad happier place...hopefully..

You can't.
Best you can do is to make a separate subforum for chitchat, serving as a shitfilter to the entire forum, like /b/ to 4chan.
