Tasteless = likes to repeat obvious shit in a overdramatized fashion like "here we can see him building a supply depot by his ramp, which is very useful because blah blah...." every. single. cast.
d.Apollo = judging from iem this guy just rarely makes any sense what so ever. Makes a lot of stupid predictions and super obvious statements, take this gem from tarson vs. dimaga: "reapers against roaches.... reapers can actually take them down because they can actually move backwards, forwards, left and right... and they do a lot of damage."
and I hate his accent.
Day[9] = talks overly abstract about simple things, goes on for thirty minutes about the importance of proper overlord scouting patterns. Makes weird noises.
Husky = well I'm not really sure about this guy but from what I've seen he likes to start out every game by declaring "I have so much shit to talk to you about today; number one... etc".. By midgame he might start commenting on the game anyway he's kinda funny I guess.
Chill = "uhm, I'm not really sure what's going on right now..." usually indicating the player is doing something horribly wrong. According to chill every player in every game ever played are deviating from some strange norm that apparently only chill is aware of.
Thegunrun = is equally as clueless as tasteless but makes up for it by sounding like an early morning jazz radio dj. Scan actually fills in with something relevant every once in a while.
Artosis = Perfection. Is so passionate about starcraft it shows through in all of his casts. Brings lots of relevant insightful comments on the game all while keeping up perfectly with the minimap.
what else?

HD = "this is HUUUUUUUUUUGE", "if this goes down it's gonna be HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE"
Incontrol = so good I don't know why he isn't doing more commentary. makes genuinely funny and witty jokes and knows what he's talking about
raelcun = has a minor case of the uptalk. sometimes when he's speaking it sounds like he's talking to a baby and makes me quite uncomfortable actually.

These are pretty accurate imo. Unfortunately I think there are a lot of casters who have annoying verbal tics.
But hey, I'll give them a little leeway if their actual casting is good.
|
True, why explain such simple things as walling and overlord pattern? I mean, people who aren't in diamond league aren't supposed to watch streams, right?
|
i think its nice that not all casters cast the same way, it's like different flavors for your sc2!
|
Tasteless = misusing the word "metagame"
SDM: likes inserting random quotes from "Sun Tzu Art of War" and apply it to the game. =D
|
Dustin Browder - "terrible terrible damage!"
now, on a more serious point, i have only really seen Day9, and I don't haven't found much of anything to complain about the way he casts other than how he stresses the significance of one tiny "blunder" of decision.
|
Day9's abstraction is why he's worth listening to.
|
Cholera - Random Reach story that makes you gay.

how fucking dare you diss day9, how fucking dare you, who the fuck do you think you are? you think you know shit? you know nothing, your not worthy to fucking lick the ground where that man has walked so just stfu and go back to 6pooling every game in gold.
but ya tastless really is just there for the "panda bear guy" and the "OMG" stuff
|
SDM/Artosis: bla bla bla *talks about something important about the game* Tasteless: That is very true.

Calm down. It's just somebody's opinion, even if you (and others) feel it is a misguided one.
I really appreciate the "abstract nonsense" day[9] gives (i.e. overlord scouting patterns). This gives a lot of people insight into something that they would not normally think about. If you take time to analyze a statement like
"Normally a player would send their overlord to position X, but Jaedong send it to position Y because of this and that. This helped him defeat player Z in the past, etc. etc."
This not only shows the hard work players put into the game, but why Jaedong has it "figured out" much better than a lot of other players. If you don't appreciate insightful things, then just don't talk about it - instead of saying IT SUCKS CUZ I SAID SO.
edit: typos

I figured since it was posted in a freaking live gsl thread during a game no one would have read it. The point of this thread was hearing other peoples remarks anyway ^.^
|
Tasteless personally has become a lot less interesting to listen to, but he started out so high that its still good, relative to other casters. I forget his name, and this is gonna sound really obscure, but maybe someone knows who I'm talking about, but there was a cast done a little while back with a caster who didn't specialize in SC2, he was mainly involved in something like HoN or something. He made a lot of mistakes relating to build orders and shit, but he had a really nice balance between excitement and trying to make relevant statements. With a little more experience in SC2 he'd be really good I think. Anyone help me out here?

Thanks man. Really appreciate that. I am going to probably start a youtube channel and do my own commentary there... once I get my graphics card and new case (2-3 days) I will start streaming with this kind of stuff in mind as well.

Sweet... I was always impressed with your "poise" when you do interviews... although I haven't heard many/any of your commentaries... any links hanging around?

God is Klaz still around? He first brought me into the SC scene... epic caster... I remember when he asked people to vote on his book and it got thousands of votes in a couple days and pissed off the whole community.

I'll take the time to apologize for every caster that doesn't cast in a way that perfectly suits you.
You may know why a supply depot goes at the ramp, but someone new to the game wont. I'ts much more important to help new players than it is to please people that already know everything thats going on.
Now, I know there are some TERRIBLE casters, but you mention a few of the best casters in sc2.
When John madden says "touchdown" and "first down" ect... Do you think anyone is screaming at their TV saying "WOOW so annoying, he says that EVERYTIME!"
|
Just wish Tasteless would stop saying: "That is so high level"...
Real players know when they see high level and noobs do not know high level when they see it... Thus this comment is as superfluous as it is annoying. Note to mention is the fact that you are casting the GSL- a tournament rife with ex-progamers and other up-and-coming gaoshou. Calling their play "high-level" seems redundant.
|
Chill is hilarious especially when hes mad.
|
My favorite english caster is no hd, but he always over-exaggerates. He's always like, this is so EPIC, this is HUGE, we are going to have an epic battle indeed. Husky is too annoying. And day9 is not as funny as he was in BW. The chill vs combat-ex commentary was golden, havn't found a good commentary from him so far in SC2

the gun run:
constantly making very weird sounds like 'hum' 'ahhh' ohh' 'hehe'. also, he cuts off his co-caster(s) WAY too much and not only is that very rude but very frustrating to listen to when you have two ppl talking at the same time.

Out of all the casters you mention, thegunrun is clearly the most clueless... Chill's casting I actually really like because I don't ladder much and it's nice to get insight on the current trends (use of "metagame" avoided!).
|
Tasteless referring to shallow cheese builds as: "Great strategy", "amazing play", "epic game" etc. It really hurts my heart... coming from the man who I listened to literally in awe when he was casting WCGs/Blizzard invitationals/Gomtv intel S1-2.
He's trying to sound professional and exciting while it's obvious he's bored of the game and doesn't play it at all. Artosis is there to save the day at least.

Yup, I agree that Tasteless is trying way too hard to convince the viewers that these are good games, but in reality most of them are horrible.

My favorite casters right now are Tasteless and Artosis. I don't think a lot of people are in a position to doubt their knowledge of SC2, especially on Artosis. Tasteless also does the best job for hype and making things entertaining, and even though most of TL is anal on deep analysis, Tasteless has basically perfected his casting style and its always great to listen to him.
Day[9]- IMO (emphasis on opinion) day9's casting is just slightly above average. Sometimes hit or miss, but his enthusiasm and day9 daily casting style are completely great. Does repeat the same things a lot though and I admit its not as mindblowing as broodwar analysis, but I give him credit for pushing out quality vods everyday. I'd say the most annoying thing are his "insane" fans.
Husky - OMGSOMEBATTLEISHAPPENINGIGOTTATALKREALLYFASTRIGHTNOW
HD - this is HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE
Chill - just a great caster. on point and hilarious
Incontrol - just hilarious and awesome at all times. not much more i can say
Chill + incontrol - show of a lifetime
I guess I don't find casters too annoying since I appreciate all the effort that goes into their streaming and uploading vods. I really hate casters though that think their viewer count is the shit and that makes them the shit because they can talk about StarCraft. Basically people who don't cast for the love of the game.
|
I think I have a weird preference in casters because the most community-popular ones are the ones I like least listening to.
I don't know what makes Tasteless so special to be completely honest.
HD and Husky for the longest time you could tell by their performance they were just some amateurs with a webcam and mic.
Chill is pretty good and actually self-criticizes himself so he can improve.
With Day[9] I share the same sentiments as Tasteless, I feel like almost anyone could do what he does speaking strictly about commentary but all the other great shit he does makes him a top choice.
InControl is probably my favorite. He's knowledgeable [ maybe not the most ] and doesn't fuck up the very simple basics like colors and names or calling probes drones/scvs. The right mix of situational humor and commentary. The white-ra cheese accent impression was the best lolol
Artosis kinda bothers me because he uses the So-so sentence structure all the time. Like I honestly haven't watched one cast where he doesn't say something like ' This timing is soooo soooo critical. ' He is knowledgeable I'll give you that.

aspiring amateur video game casters cast amateurishly, links at 11

What's wrong with putting emphasis on something like that?
It's really common in SC because you would be looking at a base and saying like "Wow he has a lot of units and hes going to moving out here in a minute. But over here at the zerg base he does have an expansion so we will see." It's just emphasis on the point that it's too early to call.
I think the main thing that bothers me about casters is just stupid buzzwords/phrases that are overused or just improperly used, or when the casters misspeak and don't correct themselves.
|
Day[9] = talks overly abstract about simple things, goes on for thirty minutes about the importance of proper overlord scouting patterns. So true, I remember when he went on about destructible rocks for 5 min, periodically checking what the players were doing. Though, what else are you gonna do besides watching supply depots being built.
If tasteless didn't say "uh" every other word I'd enjoy his casts a lot more, reminds me of that one annoying girl in high school that said "like" after every word.
Raelcun - Monotone voice that makes me feel like I'm listening to a museum recording for the blind. Husky - Starts screaming at stupid shit that could be inconsequential and I have to keep adjusting my volume cause I find out how loud he can really go. HD - Latches on to something and then talks/hints about that in his commentary for a day.
I like player/casters or casters who are just honest. It's fine that the "pro" casters have to make the game seem interesting, but when it's true, sometimes the "yeah, toss is done, game's over why are we still here?" needs to be said, kinda like when chill/inc tells you to leave the game in tlatck, need that in real games when someone's (usually bad) is dragging a game out for no reason.

It's annoying because they do it every time (think each sentence), for everything, not just when they want to emphasise.

Husky = i hate when he starts talking in middle of a game about RL ! god sake take it little bit seriously : )No really I cant say anything bad on Husky cause he did great job by casting games in Beta and i learn a lot from his casts.
