Some Backstory: I played a very small amount of BW campaign in my first week of college. I loved the game, but knew that it wasn't a good time to pick up a wildly addictive hobby. So I put it on the shelf, and haven't played anything but a few casual console and flash games for about six years.
For the past couple years, I've been following the Korean Scene, and have watched many commentaries and VODs from the past decade. I first fell in love with the scene while watching the Savior vs Iris series commentated by Klazart. I read about all the units on Liquipedia, and studied TL strategy threads. I continued following the scene with Diggity and NukeTheStars, and in streams and Jon747/nevake videos, but still didn't have the hours to commit to playing the game. But now I do.
My goal is to attain a D+ rank on ICCUP. A TL thread said that by this point in BW history, the challenge to achieve even D+ is too great to attract new players. Sign me up!

If your user icon is correct in saying that you are Terran... then the best of luck to you! I've found Terran to be the toughest race to become established in -where you achieve a good level of comfort with the builds and timings.
There will definitely be some frustrating moments... when you real weaker players are beating you simply because they have builds that are easier to execute.

WELCOME TO BROOD WAR! =) It's great to see people giving SC2's predecessor a chance.
By the way, what race are you?

Really?!? Wow, I made D+ and still felt like i played like absolute crap. Maybe I am not as bad as I thought...

D+ is quite a challenge, but you can do it. I momentarily achieved it before falling back down to the D-/D edge, where I remain. Good luck, you'll probably get raped the first few dozen games. Message me on iccup(Lightwip) if you wanna play a few practice games.

tvz: 2 port wraith tvt: 2 port wraith tvp: strong fd
I'd start by learning some kinda bad semi-cheeses just to get you comfortable with the interface and everything. Late game sc must be really overwhelming for new players. ^^

Yeah with terran it can be tough starting out, especially vs protoss but don't give up! good luck man

Good luck, but its going to be tough!
My experience picking up BW recently:
I picked up BW around the time the sc2 beta came out and played about 200 games on iccup. Before that I played about 60 games on B.net. I had never played BW before, (or any video games for the last 10 years or so) but I played a lot of vanilla SC when I was a little kid.
I played zerg, which I think is somewhat easier for the beginner than terran, and I was pretty happy to even make it to a solid "D" rank in my second season. I think I peaked at about 1600 points after 150 games or so (about 110 ladder games, 40 non ladder), and my winrate was around 30% iirc.
My apm was generally around 90. Any terran who beat me usually had at least 150, which should give you some idea of the mechanical requirements of playing Terran. Although I think they may have a somewhat easier time from the point of view of decision making, at least against Zerg.
That said, I had tons of fun despite not playing very well. Even though I did a lot of losing, I found losing at BW much much more enjoyable than losing at SC2 because the largest difficulties in the beginning are generally mechanical - for your first few hundred games it will be very easy to find dozens of things you could have done better before you even really engage the opponent. This meant it was easy to see my own improvement even when my results didn't necessarily reflect that.

you are not gonna beat any zergs with a bad 2port
probably terrans too

Reaching D+ with Terran is going to be difficult
TvP is really hard at lower levels and most D D+ players are Protoss
Good luck~

Good luck man, that's a real challenge ! But as you know, no pain, no gain

Hey all, thanks very much for the support, and yes, I'm going to play Terran. I'm going through both campaigns now, since I never finished the first time. Based on my years of lurking, I've set a few goals to prepare somewhat for when I enter the arena (which will probably be in about a week). - Constantly pump workers, and expand when possible. - Keep the queues low, but more importantly, make sure there's no downtime. - Keep resources low. - Try not to get supply blocked, nor increase supply too soon. - Memorize and learn as many shortcuts and hot keys as possible.
After Campaign, I'll probably practice a build order per match-up before starting. And yes, I expect to lose. A lot.

Grr.....D+ Terran at this stage? Good luck dude!
