Let me preface this by saying I have the UTMOST respect for day9, I've watched the hell out of his dailies and loved when he would do old casts (like the TSL, showmatches etc).
But I think the most surprising this about the tournament so far is the casting.
You'd think anything with day9 would be amazing, but it really hasn't been. More and more I've found myself just not even listening to them halfway through matches. Especially since day9 sounds like he lost his voice, they didn't have much excitement during today's matches (although the matches themselves were fantastic).
Not to hate on them at all, I just had high expectations and I feel like they're really not doing much more than your average youtube / ustream caster. It'd be fine for casual streaming but when they're put on a pedestal like that, it's not very good to be just ok anymore in my opinion.
Maybe day9 + d.apollo don't have the right chemistry or aren't used to each other enough for it to work well, but they definitely step on each others toes a lot during the matches.
And I know this is going to sound horrible, but I don't get what d.apollo is adding to the cast. He doesn't seem to have the extensive game knowledge, and he's not a fan favorite for casting as far as I've heard.
Thinking about the whole thing has also made me wonder... Where the hell is Tasteless!? I thought he would be everywhere now with sc2 and it hasn't happened yet. This tourney has given me a new appreciation for his ability to be exciting, insightful, and fun to listen to day after day for so many matches.

I always though of Day9 of more of a strategic analysis commentator rather than a super-exciting shoutcaster, he is THE BEST in that category, and hasnt d.apollo only been playing sc for a year or so?
Tasteless is going to be working with GOM isn't he? He just had a knee surgery so obviously he couldn't participate in IEM, although I dont think he intended to anyways.

I would disagree with you and that I think Day9 Apollo combo is doing great.
But, on the subject of Tasteless, I guess he's busy with the GSL?

I hope we get to see a Day9 and Tasteless combo at BlizzCon at least. :D That's be fucking brilliant.

Well it's probably a lot easier for tasteless to get excited and be an awesome commentator because he was the first person commentating korean masters playing a decade old game called brood war that was fascinating to spectate.
idk why you care so much tho. These dudes are commentating games for you, games that you wanted to watch, who gives a fuck if they aren't passionate enough, lets just watch the banelings explode and psi storms etc.

The plott brothers would be the best commentating duo imo. Day9 is the best caster when it comes to strategical analysis, while tasteless is the best at generating excitement and increasing the entertainment level.
|
My only beef with the commentating is appolo
|
I personally enjoy the commentary, appolo has a cool excitement to him almost childish you could say, and day9 is relaxed and enjoying himself. All good to me.
|
I like d.apollo's voice and enthusiasm but the stuff he's saying I find I disagree with a lot.
|
I'd assume Tasteless has a contract with GOMtv and can't do other events like IEM. I might be wrong.
Day9 and Apollo have done a pretty good job overall I think. Main issues I've had with them are the oooohs and aahhhhs along with the pitch drop in their voices which are redundant and of course the interrupting of each other.

I think the Day9 TV shows are better than the livecasting, but the announcing is still pretty good imo. The one thing about English RTS announcing I've noticed so far is that I've yet to hear a duo that has really GREAT chemistry, although most duos have perfectly okay chemistry. That's probably because chemistry comes with time, and there are few commentating duos in E-sports that have been allowed to get to know each other for years.

Day9 says everything there is to say, Dappollo can therefore only state useless things, and DAy9 always seems to talk over Dapollo when any battle occurs. I think its just chemistry, Day9 on his own is amazing and whenever he casts with Chill they both become really awesome and hilarious ("Chill, is your mic broken? I didn't hear you laughing at my joke so I assumed something was wrong")

Funny you mention the Day9+Chill casting combo, I was just rewatching some of the TSL2 vods and remarked at the chemistry between them.

I think Day9 is fantastic, in his own right. He has the experience to offer fantastic insight. He knows how to explain things to more casual viewers as well as adds a twist of humor to things that would otherwise be written off as normal. I did have a problem with the other caster though, not to say he's completely horrible.. he just felt lost. Like a little kid poking and ooh'ing at shiny lights, and didn't play the game. Aside from that personal opinion, they had little to no chemistry the first few days and Day9 had to struggle to get anything in between Apollo's endless mundane bantering. Pretty harsh and biased, but obviously just my opinion Maybe more experience between the two will offer a better experience.

I really think d.appollo is very bad. Half the time he is tripping over his own words and doesnt seem to be aware of what he is saying. day[9] + Husky and HD would be a lot better

I get bored of listening even to professional sports casters
