Who's with me?! Also American popular music sucks. This is beyond awesome, you deserve an oscar for the idea alone. As for the topic, i'd say american entertainment is like teamliquid, it produces great stuff that gets drowend by a lot of crap but in the end it's still the best you get. Money is not that important, there needs to be a developed industry with many people involved who all profit from the large experience that the industry as a whole has. Tradition is the word i guess^^. I also dont think even an developed entertainment industry that isn't used to all the money could use it very well. A good idea has to come first, money probably broadens the possibilities but it would take some time for people getting used to naturally think of their ideas in this broadend space. In that sense i agree that it would really be interesting to see what the entertainment industries of some countries would produce that would have had access to american amounts of money for 20 years.

Of course there can still be the typical storyline of lost loves whom you meet again 10 years later, and the good guy disposing of the bad guy and takes the girl away. In fact, it'll be best if this all happens while the protagonist is about to answer the Million Dollar Question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire"..... + Show Spoiler + Slumdog Millionaire, if you haven't figured out already :p Maybe there is demand from people like the OP, who want something set in a different culture/country, which can be attributed to the success of the movie.

Check out "Departures" (2008), its an awesome Japanese movie dealing with the distant relationship modern people have with death. Its top100 on IMDB. Funny too. Check out Rotten tomatoes from time to time as well to see what new foreign film is out and give it a look. There are amazing movies out, but you have to search a bit to find them. The same with music. They don't bring in the money, but they are fantastic works of art. And when you find something nice, blog about it here so we can enjoy it as well.

Shows like Coupling (probably the best comedy show ever made), Peep Show, Jonathan Creek, Poirot and Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett. I can not begin to explain how great that series is, Jeremy Brett puts on one of the best performances ever in any context. What's even sicker about the performance is that he is dying towards the end of the series and still puts on a flawless performance. you're literally on smack if you think uk tv is any good outside of a few shows sure, we might have a bunch of good comedies but there have been about 4 watchable dramas produced in the past decade in the uk.

One thing I never got was why Mad Men never really took off, now I don't know how big it is in the US but outside of it, it's placed on obscure places on obscure times. It's a shame because it's actually one of the few decent series out of America at the moment.

And how many times do I have to see a book "brought to life" as a screenplay only for it to turn out that the director never read the book? :/

![]() i wonder - if you gave a non-US studio/director hundreds of millions of dollars to make a film, where would all that money be spent anyway? isn't there really only one place to dump it, into special effects and/or famous actors, and at that point how different would it really be from american cinema? it would definitely be interesting to see different cultures takes on the big budget movie though. the only thing i can think of that is somewhat analogous is bollywood, which i don't really dig :D

As far as the OP goes, there is shit entertainment everywhere. Everyone always assumes the grass is greener because all they hear about from other cultures is the stuff that's good enough to make its way onto their radar. For example lets say I finish watching "Spaced" and say holy crap UK TV must be way ahead of us! It's rare to see such a well written show on American television! Then you go through their lineup and its full of crap like "Demons." Same for some guy you get into "The Wire" or "Arrested Development", and he looks up some of the most popular shows in the US and is met by "Two and a Half Men" and "CSI." The point is that the good stuff is pretty rare in general. Although I will second Riptide and say there have been a pretty good string of comedy shows on BBC in recent years. so I'd check those out. "Spaced" in particular, especially if you're into Edgar Wrights style. Also Justin Bieber is Canadian. I swear if you guys subject us to another crappy pop culture phenomenon we're going to take another hockey team.

There's tons of quality shows/movies out there. That said, I absolutely agree and encourage seeing a wider range of entertainment. I think you'll find every thing has its strong and weak points, and there's going to be cliched, annoying or overdone themes everywhere. However, the good stuff you find will make it all worth it !
