so to sum up
- epic action movie fun summer blockbuster
- pumps up and inspires you
- came out in the 1990s
- bruce willis is in it, but i am unsure whether he lives
- world bands together to stop disaster

Sheesh. As far as I know there is only one movie that fits that entire description: Armageddon

Deep Impact is the more mature flick over all comparatively but it doesn't have Bruce Willis.
On the same genre 2012 might be up your alley, though it doesn't have Bruce Willis, and I won't spoil if it ends well or not.

YES i love this movie its so great haha thank you

keep the recommendations coming

Any recent post-apocalyptic movies I might not know about? I have seen Book of Eli, something like that is what I am looking for. Zombie apocalypse counts as well, but I think I have seen all the major ones there.

Do you know what flavor of post apocalypse you are looking for? Book of Eli was more hopeful and progressive where there are others that are definitely commenting on human depravity. Ex) The Road

Any, really. As I said I have seen all the Zombie ones but I'll check out The Road, sounds good thanks!

How about Serenity?
District 9?

erggg The Box

Notes on the Box: I did not like the Box because I have Never been a big proponent of existentialism. Before seeing this Movie you should probably either read No Exit or know the outline plot of No Exit as it is attempting to be a contemporary version of the same concept and alludes to the play regularly.

I know they aren't recent but I am also obligated to recommend Blade Runner and Aliens

I am making recommendations based on what people are asking for.

If you want something niche ask for something niche. Example: Feel good foreign film that features homosexuals: Bear Cub

When people ask for main stream sci fi from 2010 (almost always big budget), or something that stars Bruce Willis, I cant exactly mention some obscure production, particularly if they want something bearable to watch.

Otherwise I slip things in when appropriate. I wouldn't call 180 degrees South, Moon or Behind the Mask mainstream.

On such notes go see Chicago 10

Movies like Boondock Saints/American Gangster?

The Sequel to Boondock Saints just came out not too long ago.

What aspect of American Gangsters did you enjoy?
If you enjoyed the acting and historical aspect you could also try the movie that Denzel should have gotten his Oscar for: The Hurricane

He also had a great role in Malcom X

Otherwise if you like Denzel acting like a badass try: Training Day

It's kinda bad though =(.

Gangs of New York - a bit more theatrical
Casino - don't remember much except it is good
The Departed - you've probably heard/seen it already ... do yourself a favor and watch the better Hong Kong original (Infernal Affairs I, II, and III)
Goodfellas - don't remember much except it is good
Public Enemies - actually I'll probably recommend this as the closest to American Gangster albeit set in older times
Eastern Promises

Some of these might be more of heist, drama, thrillers than gangster movies. Sometimes genres get a bit mixed up in my head and my memory isn't too good.

I only looked back until 2001-ish so if you want I can see what I watched before then. Sorry if some might not seem enough sci-fi-ish to you. These I'd recommend:

Sunshine - probably the best recommendation I can give that fits as a sci-fi movie ... but it's also a little bit of a horror movie a la Event Horizon.
Star Trek
Avatar
Cloverfield - somewhat of an action blockbuster ... lots of ppl love it and lots hate it ... I liked it
The Host - yeah ... maybe more of a monster movie like Cloverfield, but eh ... sci-fi-ish ... I liked it, some ppl hate it
The Fountain - I absolutely love it ... the music is transcendent stuff by Mogwai but others hate it ... it's too epic a story to be done perfectly so as long as your expectations are dumbed down a bit then you'll be fine I think ... appreciate it more for the artistic-ness. This movie also fits in well with the pure sci-fi genre.
Children of Men - won a bunch of awards and is absolutely amazing even if it's considered a mainstream blockbuster hit
Eternal Sunshine on a Spotless Mind - absolutely amazing but it might be better off under the romantic genre category
Primer - Memonto-ish in terms of style ... about time travel ... a brain-bender of a movie
Solaris - another Moon-like film ... also fits in well as a pure sci-fi movie.
Minority Report
Equilibrium

These ... not so much but I guess they're ok for one time viewing:

Surrogates
The Time Traveler's Wife
Transformers - either one
Terminator Salvation - or any of them
Push - mutant powers
9 - if you like steampunkish animation
2012
Jumper
A Scanner Darkly - I hated it ... but if you're super philosophical you might like it.
Ultraviolet
Steamboy - Japanese anime movie but don't really remember if I like it enough to recommend it
aeon flux
Night Watch or Day Watch - the Russian movies
The Butterfly Effect
Cube - any of them ... a bit of a cult favorite

I've seen all of the above, but Primer is utter garbage and i had to stop watching The Fountain after like 15 minutes.

The Host - yeah ... maybe more of a monster movie like Cloverfield, but eh ... sci-fi-ish ... I liked it, some ppl hate it

haven't seen those, i guess i'll check out The Host. Avatar is too disneyish

The most recent "big" western movie was 3:10 to Yuma which is quite good. Seraphim Falls is also a slightly above average movie that most people probably haven't seen/heard before but falls firmly in the Western genre. There Will Be Blood, which won some big awards and is set it the Western-ish areas of America but isn't really a western shooter, is also another choice. There really aren't many true Westerns anymore =(.

Oh, and if you liked the first Cube and wanna watch more of the same thing then you'll like the sequels. The thing about the original Cube movie that will help you really appreciate it, is the fact that their budget was supersmall and they were able to reuse the environment to shoot the movie and tell the story in a very creative way. The sequels obviously got bigger budgets. Also note that I only saw Cube and Cube 2: Hypercube. I have not seen Cube Zero. I kinda view the Cube series like the Saw series in that the first one was a bit wow since it was original/creative/shocking ... but once you've seen it and know the general story ... the sequels become a bit more predictable (this isn't to say I didn't enjoy Cube 2 btw ... it was decent as a one-time viewing movie).

Edit: Feel free to tell me to politely shut up diggity =) ... I like to give movie recommendations as well.

Anything similar to the Cohen brothers out recently? More Burn After Reading and the Big Lebowski than their other stuff. Somthing like In Bruges.

Also do they make any movies like Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting anymore? Drug movies always seem to shake you to the core xD.

Thanks for recommending the Prestige btw, that was frekin sweet. Quite authentic too if you know some details on performance magic in general.
EG is a great example

Far be it from me to tell anyone to shut up

hey diggity i just recently watched cube and absolutely loved it. I was wondering if you would recommend any of the sequels or would i just waste my time watching them?

Wow I haven't heard of Cube. *stunned* I will go watch it asap.

also.... old school westerns with cowboys... and mexicans.... and 6 shooters and the stuff

3:10 to Yuma is the best recent western. Its entirely character driven. Very solid remake.

If you take a step in the recent past: Tombstone is incredible.

As far as Western Classics I have to recommend: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Under no circumstances should you go and see Appaloosa. It attempted to be character driven by creating characters that were intriguing in one aspect and utterly one dimensional in another. As a result the entire cast came off as unrealistic and shallow.

Anything similar to the Cohen brothers out recently? More Burn After Reading and the Big Lebowski than their other stuff. Somthing like In Bruges.

The Cohen Brothers are my personal favorites along side Michael Mann. Unfortunately their directing style is all over the place (compare Lebowski to Fargo and then to O Brother) and as such its difficult to recommend something "Cohen-esk".

For their serious stuff: Collateral (which is incidentally my favorite movie). For more goofy off beat stuff: either The Men Who Stare at Goats which is far more amusing when you know that a majority of it is "true" ahead of time and The Informant! which also has a nice truthy twinge to it.

Drug movies always seem to shake you to the core xD.

Unfortunately the majority of drug films I encode are about how great they are or how they should be legal.
