Hello TL!
Sort of at a crossroads with my job atm. I currently work at a very small local store, where me and the boss are the only employees. I have been with the business for a little over 2 years now, and have garnered a somewhat cool relationship with him.
I am still making minimum wage, even after asking a few times for a payraise. I have been given the same answer all times, that being the store does not pull in enough money to allow him to give me a raise. While I am not too happy with the decision, I understand it.
However, as of the past 2 months or so, my schedule has become a complete mess. For some reason, my hours have become extremely random. I do not work on a set schedule, and its been pretty tough trying to arrange things to do outside of work. Along with this, my boss has decided that he can call me whenever, asking me to work either the same day or less than 10 hours from that point and expect me to do so without being able to say no. I have had to cancel previous plans quite a few times and it really has been frustrating my friends/family. Of the couple times I have said no to his inquiries or stated I would much rather not, he has stated to me "Well I can always find a new employee to fill the position if you can't." I may have taken it a little personally, but this seems to be extremely disrespectful to say to one of your employees.
The only reason I really stay with the job is the ease of it during school. During school months, it is fairly easy for me to get studying/papers done during the ton of slow time I have at work, which has worked out really great over the past 2 years. Also, as far a job goes, there is a large amount of down time to do various things, such as listen to music/watch movies on my ipod. However, this slow time can also make some days last extremely long when there is nothing to be done.
My question to all of you fine peoples: Should I go for a job with a little higher pay and somewhat more reliable hours with flexibility when I want to take days off, or just suck it up and stick with the job I know for the ease of work and slow time during school months. Appreciate the help. Thanks!

Man, that sounds like a pain (having to cancel plans).
Why not search while you're at it though? Couldn't hurt, right?

It's easier to look for a job while you have one. If possible try to seek out other employment. If you find a job you want instead give notice and explain some of the reasons why you left if you want to. You seem to have pretty good ones.

If you're looking for job alternatives, have you ever considered working for your school's library? Lots of down time, quiet, and you can get a lot of stuff done. They also pay pretty well.

I thought it sounded pretty bitchy too if I were to quit for that reason, but then I remember that this is a minimum wage job with no future at all that I can replace with a little effort.

seems like a pretty demanding job for getting paid just minimum wage. but yeah go search for a better one that is convenient with your school for ur hwksss

I love people who come to TL for advice.
I would love your job man, as I am unemployed. Be thankful for what you have. Though if I were in your position I would actually talk to him about it?

Lot's of places offer minimum wage employment with somewhat crappy working conditions. Find one with more flexible hours.

It's extremely bad to work as the only employee. You have no chance for promotions, and from what you wrote, no chance for raises.
What I suggest is to look for some other jobs, and use that as leverage to make your boss pay you more. After all you have been there for 2 years and you must be more valuable than any new recruits.

I'd look for a new job while staying at your old one.
Random hours No chance of pay raise Minimum wage
Employers should only be able to pick two. All three and you really should look for something better.

It sounds like your boss doesn't really care about you. You should try to work somewhere else.

Just look for a job while you have this one. I don't see why you should stick with this job the way you describe it.

It sounds like hes paying you to study with the odd interruption of a customer? If you've finished studying then leave. But if he's happy for you to study at work then that's a huge perk IMO, and one your unlikely to find elsewhere.

You should tell your boss you want to work accordingly to the old schedule again. And that if he want's to be able to call you to work extra on the day itself he has to pay irregularity pay. At least 150% of your normal wages. More even if he also expects you to cancel your previous plans on the spot.
If you can work again accordingly to your old schedule without the irregularities and you don't need the extra money I would stay as long as it's usefull for your schoolwork. But if you would rather have a little more cash and no problem with doing the schoolwork at home you should start looking for a new job.

Tell him exactly what you're telling us and if he doesn't agree to giving you better wages compared to what you do for the company you will quit. It's easy as that.

I dont think a lot of people are properly assessing OP's ability to utilize his down time for whatever he desires.
Being able to study and do homework, at work, is sooooooooooooooooooooooo crucial.
A lot of places won't allow that to occur, either on principle or the lack of down-time.
That down-time is invaluable...If i were you, i'd stick it out...Or only change if you find a MUCH better position.
I mean if you can bag a job that pays a pretty decent amount more, but doesn't work you as much..its basically the same thing as having downtime AT work.
