That's the book that was used for my French 1A-1B-2A classes @ community college ^^ Hope the online resources help...

Also you could buy the 3rd edition on amazon for like 30 bucks which is way cheaper than their $120 bullshit for the 4th edition, and the craziness it would cost for the 5th considering they have almost the same content...

I lived in France for 2 years, and I'd still be fluent if I hadn't hated the language with a passion. You aren't going to learn "conversational french" from a book, because a fair amount of the 'correct' grammar rules are just dropped or used inventively in normal speech.

And how near a future are we talking, because properly learning a language through a course is like 6 months of work to get even passably good at the language.

not that much. just one or two words here and there, and some accent.

Anyway how much time do you have in front of you op? And do you have any basis to work on?

It speak different but it's still the same words.

French is a really hard language to learn because every word has a gender.

If you want to learn I would recommend the tiny travellers books with premade phrases like :

"What direction is the restaurant"

"Where can I find a bus station"

These things will actually help you while being there. If you start with the basic and take a course, you will be no good and you wont uses any of this.

If you want to Skype to practice and play sc2 pm me.

I speak French and I keep meeting people who have taken 2-3 or even 4 years of French and school, and now they barely remember any of it.

If you want to actually speak the language you'll need to really work hard at it, and even then you'll always screw up with the gender of nouns which you just have to know because there's no "rule" to determine it. If you speak a lot of it you'll eventually know them but yeah...

Yeah, I'm French, and French pretty much sucks as a language. The genders for objects make no logical sense whatsoever and it's pretty much the same situation for the verb conjugations. Also, stupid exceptions are pretty much everywhere. Good luck!

I have a few months in front of me, I haven't made any actual plans yet, just I hope to go by Spring time next year for a month or two, maybe longer. So I have quite a bit of time ahead of me.

What about Rosetta Stone? Is that worth it?

So far my French skills are Bonjour, Para Les Ingles? and Sortie (exit i believe) the last time I was in France.

The reason I want to learn is because the last time I went to France, I really enjoyed both Paris and the French Rivera (I visited Nice for a few days). I hope to go back sometime soon, but I want to meet people and all of that stuff.

My blog post from 3 years ago is about my trip to France

Hahaha. That's some spanish-french combination. I think you mean Parlez-vous Anglais? It doesn't sound anything like the spanish "para" and "ingles".

Good luck! I hope people have some recommendations for learning french that is actually used. I learnt all the proper grammar and everything through years of school. I doubt it'd be very useful in conversational french.

Edit:

I listened to one of his for spanish while I was on a flight to El Salvador. He was quite good but one of the kids was so dumb and terrible. Really slowed down the entire process.

On the contrary, a lot of french can be very very picky about grammar and will correct whoever makes a mistake in front of them. Don't be offended by that, there is no hard feeling and it is quite common (nothing like "this fuckin amerloq' cant even speak properly") but i understand it can be hard to swallow.

The other advice i can give you is to be careful of being polite, most french wont mind if you are not fluent in french but they will if you are not polite (common politeness: bonjour/au revoir, use "vous" instead of "tu" and you shall be fine).

The method people told you above are great, however i strongly advise you to do the same thing as all people do to learn english: watch films in french.

subtitled if you're not confident with your french or if you dont know the film. A good thing is that although francophones dont produce much actions films, they do produce a lot of "slice of life" movies, in those there is everything you should know about everyday french.

Anyway if you want to talk over msn/hon just pm me. And good luck, it can be a quite hard langage to learn but it is worth it.

EDIT: i forgot: a lot of words are common in french and in englich ,learn the pronunciation in french of a word written in english and often it will work (well, the other times you'll make a fool out of yourself, but it happens to everyone in a foreing country).

Because it's traced back (more or less) to Latin, which also has noun cases. Although in Latin there are three cases (including a neutral case).

French is not the worst. I have heard that many East-European languages (Finnish and Russian?) has more than 10 cases.

Just be glad you don't have to decline everything like in Russian.
