Some of you might know about match.com, in the UK at least its probably the biggest online dating service

As of know, i have come to believe its a big ass scam website (or one that is extremely poorly run and mostly swindles people's money) - probably shouldnt have punted 80 quid at it but there you go

Most people sign up to the website and will never be able to un-sign up, having their credit cards billed indefinitely. Also, removing email notifications or spam trying to get you to rejoin is almost impossible

You can only talk to other registered members on the website who pay, but there is no way to see who pays and who doesnt, so often youll send many messages, not realising that person actually cant talk back to you in any way at all

Their customer service is terrible, basically they got online email service, and they are only capable of sending 2-3 different automated emails, and not much else

Their login system is appalling (for a start they keep your password in some decryptable format instead of using an md5 hash or something)
At the moment, after opening my account, paying (80 quid >_>) and logging out, ive been locked out of my account and it seems to no longer exist - requesting a password request causes no email to be sent to me (inbox or junk) and ofc there is no way for me to contact them via some automated system. When i try to login, i get the same response every time - "your username or password has not been recognised" (note, im not an idiot, im 100% sure its right, ive got an email telling me when i signed up what it is in plain text)

My username obviously exists, since i cant sign up again using the same one
IHMO there must have been some screwup or corruption in their database, and i have no course of action to get it fixed

Probably shoulda done some research on the dubious practises and terrible customer service these guys provide, sucks i got scammed i guess. Learn my lesson next time and avoid online dating lol
Nice way to strike guys when they are down though.

I dont see myself being so desperate to have to rely on online-dating but thats a pretty big scam or just abusing those nasty loopholes.

women

they cost more and won't have sex with you until you pay them, but they only accept currency in the form of jewelry or food.

Meh, I wouldn't say someone is desperate for trying online dating. You know like half of all relationships are started on the internet nowadays. Either way, it sucks to hear that op. I hope you can get your money back somehow.
This is my quote.

Horrible usage of statistics, and extremely misleading.
- not all of relationships started lead to marriage.
What proportion of marriages are started from online relationship?
divorce rate may be less or more by relationships that are started online.
But, you know, you probably know these things.

Sorry dude that sucks.

Gotta do research on nearly any service. I've been on the inside of a few internet companies and seen the insides of more - way too many internet companies are either very badly run or are outright scams. Match.com has a huge number of complaints regarding fake internet profiles for example, and other complaints with the billing (that you've just experienced). Please don't let shiny marketing fool you.

If you watch TV and see some internet companies advertised there be extra cautious! There's all sorts of internet garbage advertised on TV. In fact I would go so far as to say that if it's an internet company offering some sort of service, and it's advertised on TV, assume it's crap unless you find out otherwise. There are a few exceptions though (GoDaddy isn't great but it's pretty good, and infinitely better than the scam artists on TV these days).

Lesson 2: Don't give out CC info online unless the company is trustworthy. Paypal is better - I don't like too many of Paypal's practices but it does prevent CC info from getting in the hands of worse people.

*edit* As for online dating it's not completely bad. One of my former coworkers has a wife he met online and they've got 3 kids and are happy (as far as I know). Good luck.

gonna try and give their customer service number a call (if it exists) when i get back into the UK and get it fixed

Cancelled any posssible recurring payments, might aswell try and get as much use out of the product as possible. If not i guess i could try and launch a dispute with paypal, but i doubt that is going anywhere right?

Kennigit spot on. Unlucky Vince, match.com did seem fucking retarded to me. Don't think it's a scam website but if you get in trouble just switch banks, they won't follow u. I happened to get scammed by a far more retarded scam and had to switch banks to avoid that. Lesson learned anyway!

Sorry to hear man. What a strange service to have. If it is so popular why is their system so unconventional and awkward. It could be worse. When I saw you say scam, I was thinking someone within the dating site was trying to swindle money from you. I heard alot of these cases.

I was under the impression that was a tongue-in-cheek way of getting people to come back to the site, their staff have an odd sense of humor.
