Augmenting Attacks Against Siege Using Overseers

Let's say I'm Zerg, facing off against an opponent with a bunch of tanks and vikings, and we're bumping against the food cap. I know from testing that corruptors and vikings are pretty evenly matched, food for food, so if I mass X food of corruptors against X food of mixed tanks and vikings, I'm going to crush his air pretty handily.

Trouble is, that leaves me with little or no food for ground forces, so I'm horribly vulnerable. I could sacrifice drones, but then I'm not in a position to rebuild as quickly after an exchange.

This is where overseers come in. Instead of going bonkers with corruptors, I roughly match his viking force and send them in with a handful of overseers, which proceed to drop infested terrans in his tank line. If my opponent attacks the overseers, my corruptors get free shots in and will comfortably kill off his air. If he focus-fires the corruptors, they'll fight him to a standstill while my infested terrans drop among his tanks. If he unsieges his tanks to prevent them killing each other, I can immediately charge in the ground army that I still had plenty of food for because my overseers didn't cost any.

Looking forward to trying this one. In a year or so.

Those are some good thoughts on strategy! Except, overseers are very expensive to make, and then you have to wait around for them to have enough energy in order to use their infested terran ability. Plus, you can only drop like one infested terran per overseer, it would be better to use this strategy with an overlord w/ drop = less expensive and it can hold many more units.

If it is a meching terran, they won't want to wait until max to push out, they will try to gain ground along the mid game while zerg is still macroing.

Those are just my thoughts! Good thinking though...

P.S. also remember, Vikings are a 'choose what to attack' unit, they can't attack both ground and air at the same time. They are either anti air, or anti ground, not both.

i assume he is refering to the situation where both zerg and terran are maxed, zerg has near unlimited minerals and gas in the bank and unlimited larvae and is still unable to break the terran army.

to OP,
seems like a valid idea but wouldnt it be countered by having a few turrets starcraft 1 style, and just landing the vikings. the turrets could target the overseers and the vikings would make short work of the infested terrans?

More of a tactic than a strategy - still, thanks

In principle you can drop two IT's per overseer (they recently had their energy cost reduced) but I agree it might be awkward waiting for their energy to fill up.

As far as using overlords and dropping units goes, you might be right - but then again you might not.

Consider: every unit you put in an overlord represents at least 1/2 a food you haven't got in your waiting ground army or in the corruptor ball. That may or may not prove significant

Also, IIRC, zerglings only have enough HP to attract a single siege tank shot each (no overkill). An infested terran attracts three, so you'd have to drop three zerglings to get the same splash effect as one IT. Plus overseers are a bit harder to kill.

I don't know - I'll try a few variations out based on your ideas and see what happens.

I did think of that. However, vikings are very vulnerable when they come to take off again if there are corruptors in the area, and the siege tanks will still fire at the ITs because the vikings can't one-shot them. Plus you can contaminate turrets, I think...

Needs proper testing, for sure.
