I, funkie, come here to ask you for advice, help and wisdom!.
KABOOM! (magic powder!)
I'm being offered the oportunity to go and work in Australia, and I need to know how's life there, and how are things done, how's the culture, and possibly, websites that would help me learn a lot more about the country itself.
Life in Australia is fairly cruisy and easy going. It really does depend on what you're doing and where you're living though. Generally it is the typical 5 day work week with a Friday/Saturday night on the piss. Sunday with close friends and family.
We're also big into our sports and outdoor activities. Camping/Hiking/Surfing/Boating/Fishing/Diving etc etc.. Which is good if you live in a city like Adelaide or Perth because otherwise you'll just be saving your money to go overseas. We are also very close to South-East Asia so you can have a island paradise holiday anytime you'd like.
If you can get into the mining or offshore sector you'll make a lot of money.
But it's hard to give precise information without knowing what you'll be doing and where you'll be living.
Well first, you must have a dislike for Kiwi's, observe:
GTFO tomatriedes!
Second - as mentioned above - which cities are your options?
If it's Melbourne at this time of the year (where I am right now) make sure you pack cold weather clothes, currently here at my desk in my house in west-melbourne it's 5 degrees, cbf turning the heater on.
If it's Sydney, I believe they are also kinda cold at this time of year too. If it's any other city though, you'll be fine in general warmish weather clothes - perth/darwin/brisbane don't get cold at all. Not sure about Adelaide - but if you're going to Adelaide, I refuse to help you any further.
I'm going to assume your options are Sydney or Melbourne btw;
For both Melbourne and Sydney, we both have a pretty laid back culture, drinking on Friday nights after work is a must, if you're in Sydney you go to Rugby or whatever, if you're down here in Melbourne there's always an AFL game to go to on the weekend. I'm told down here in Melbourne we're a lot more laid back than the Sydney folk, but I don't know about that.
Speaking of AFL, learn yourself our national football sport - it's a lot different to any other sport. I suppose it's a cross between American football, and rugby. Although it's quite manlier than both of those sports - especially American football.
As for websites... I'd firstly start with wiki, I'm pretty sure every countries 'page' on wiki is quite useful. From there, most foreigners seem to have a little trouble with our slang words and terminology - I'd suggest have a quick glance over a site that lists those types of things. Or I'm sure after a few more aussies post here you'll see a few things.
Other than that... sorta need more info on what your 'opportunity' is.
cheers mate
*Bed time for me, I'll check out the other posts in the morning*

There is far better things to do than drink your precious weekend and hanging on to the toilet bowl the following morning. Go out explore the country there's just so many beautiful places in Australia to discover!
Being that Australia is a multicultural nation you can easily find a myriad of social niches and pick whichever suits you best. I personally don't identify with the rugby/AFL/cricket niches as frankly I think they're really monotonous crappy sports and people tend to like them just for the sake of appearing like a 'true blue Aussie'.
That being said, It's a great country and shouldn't be a problem adjusting for most foreigners Best of luck yo!

Really, people actually do that? i don't believe you
Nah, just kidding, it is however the number one place to ask for help and guidance on employment, rent, schools etc.
Australia is very multicultural. If you work in a typical Australian company, chances are 50% or more of your colleagues will either come from another country or was born from parents who came from else where.
The cities on the southern coast and Tasmania are cold during winter, else where I guess are very hot. I live in Melbourne.
If you have any specific question to ask, I'll try to answer them.

I have better internet than most people on this site i'd imagine, I dunno about that. People who don't know how to get good plans have bad internet, yeah.
Anyway, it's the same as just about every other western country. You have nothing to be concerned about.

Yeah and also bring the biggest knife you can find, otherwise you may end up in this embarassing situation in which you're ridiculed for having an insufficient knife.
I suggest studying the GTR soundboard to acquaint yourself with our accent.
Australia is great mate, just be careful of all the different dangerous types of animals that will try to kill you if you get into the water, sharks, jellyfish, crocodiles, swimming knives, they're all in there.
