Today my sister tested it on my recommendation (girl, 2 months old): exactly as in the video. I'm sharing this because it's awesome, turn off your own little vuvuzela at will!

That's pretty cool! I'll remember that for like 10 years from now.

I remember learning about this in either psychology or bio class; the baby wants to be reminded of being in its mother's womb, which the water helps simulate.

Don't know if it always works with repeated exposure though, so I'll save this as a last-resort tactic when I have my own kid ^^

Lol, quick thinking. Thats cool to know, wish I would have known it a few months ago when my niece was a baby.

My sis said that it worked great the first time, and only reduced the crying the second and third time. So indeed, use it as a last resort :D

Is this why moving cars work to soothe them as well? Is it the constant background noise as well as the feeling of movement?
And also, can they become conditioned to this enough for it to stop working? Because babies always seem to be soothed by car rides, at least until they get old enough to stop caring.

I wonder why running water would remind a baby of the womb... Unless the mom is taking a wee, there's little of that sound around. I'll try it too with newborn twins... report back with the results.

Perhaps... it's the sound of blood rushing through the womb that they are used to, this is what the water emulates.
Not sure how much a car engine sounds like running water or pumping blood though =/

As a little kid, I remember I used to fall asleep next to the dryer whenever my mom was doing laundry. So even today I find the sound of the dryer running relaxing and it still makes me sleepy ^^

I'll have to try this on my niece tonite. She always seems to save up all her crying for when I come over and we're trying to watch the NBA finals....

Wow, that's imbalanced.

Might yet be useful.

My mother tells me that when I was a baby I was very calmed by the sounds of an airplane while we were flying. I flew a decent amount as a baby and never had issues with crying once I got on the plane. To this day I find it easy to fall asleep on planes with a sort of monotonous drone in the background.

When [Titus] landed a gnat came and entered his nose, and it knocked against his brain for seven years. One day as he was passing a blacksmith's it heard the noise of the hammer and stopped. He said; I see there is a remedy. So every day they brought a blacksmith who hammered before him. This went on for thirty days, but then the creature got used to it.

I've never tried running water but I can vouch for:

A warm bath
Gentle massage
Walking them in the pram
Taking them for a drive

If you play soothing music after they're born and keep the volume to a comfortable level during down time then they won't grow up needing dead silence to go to sleep. A set routine (think bath, massage, bed) will help them go to sleep easier too.

Don't have any babies of my own yet. Did help raise my younger brothers and some of the other 42 grandchildren on my father's side of the family though.

it sounds so much like the terran sc2 soundtrack to me wtf

maybe because it rains on steppes of war and i watch too many replays?

does anyone else here the terran music while listening to the rain?

I don't know how much gas we burned up driving fussy babies. Then we realized it was the sound that calmed them down, not so much the movement. That's when we started using a sound machine. The problem is we are away from home so much. I was researching out baby sleep and found the greatest solution. Ugh, you can't waste water. The only conceivable way is if you water your lawn and it evaporates and falls somewhere else, but that just changes distribution. You cannot waste water by running the tap.

Unless you mean it is expensive... but it is a tiny amount of cost on a utilities bill.

Continue using the tap to make babies shut up.

I've learned that most of the time my relative's babies cry they just want attention or to be picked up; babies are allergic to being on their backs.
