So I was floating around the awesome free games thread and I ended up on adult swim from the robot unicorn attack game, so I surfed around and ended up at this game Multitask.

My question: Does playing a multitasking game like this improve your StarCraft ability if your multitasking in SC is a weakness, or does it only make you better at multitasking with those specific skills and situations that appear in the Multitask game? Basically does it teach you some underlying brain usage that can be generalized, or is the learning that happens in your brain just centered on recognizing specific signals?

What do you think?

Also once the purple level comes in I die immediately in discussing this game.

As a second part, I remember in a Day9 daily someone asked what to do when beta is down and one of the things he said is play minesweeper. Is that kind of learning that happens in minesweeper that allows you get faster and faster at it and the transition of that fast accurate clicking to SC a similar process with similar value as that of the multitask game to SC multitasking? Or does something make the situation different.

I just picked up minesweeper again today too, but I set my best times 32 inter and 91 expert like 3 years ago and haven't beaten 120 expert in the past 2 years. I wonder how long it'll take/if I can get back that.

My sister is a freaking whiz she's got 22/75 best scores. (we never play beginner)

An interesting thing I just noted about coming back to Minesweeper: It stays exactly the same. I know when I've matched my previous level or surpassed it. If I were coming back to StarCraft after a break, I could surpass my previous level and win less, because of the evolution of the game and other players.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just like, your opinion man

I think as long as you don't focus too hard on this one specific map and try to 'beat' it all the damn time, you'll get something out of it. Trying to master this one map will likely bind you to a few limited scenarios which might end up counterproductive. But as long as you keep in mind the big picture(getting better at multitasking), you should improve with training tools such as this.

Ooh, love that game. My record is 346.
I don't think playing it would improve your StarCraft multitasking though. StarCraft multitasking is more about remembering to always keep doing stuff at different places on the map. In StarCraft, you don't have four screens showing your expansion and battles and the ability to control them all at once.
It might improve your multitasking a little bit, but I wouldn't hold my breath for any drastic changes.

I'm not really trying to use it personally I actually was posing it more as a theoretical question (that type of thing is more interesting to me than actually using the game).

I think that multitasking in other games can help your brain to develop multitasking skills that can be used towards starcraft, however I think the gains are far less than those you could gain by playing one of the ums maps that people use to get better at starcraft.

You guys are pretty good at minesweepers. I remember scores like 72 on intermediate (i think) and I was pretty impressed with myself. Doesn't necessarily mean you click faster than everyone else at starcraft necessarily. I think the reason is, the further you get into minesweepers, the more there is to think about, and eventually you have to go slow. In starcraft you always want to play fast.

Finally, yes starcraft skill level does seem to increase quickly, but it's more likely that you're just rusty if you find you're doing worse. Especially on bnet where the increase in skill level is slower.
