It does affect the artist, but record sales are still increasing so they're still making mo monies

piracy does not affect the artist at all.

Here's an even bolder statement:
piracy helps the sales ;]. It's better than any kind of advertisement.

I'd actually agree with this. I myself know many people (including me) who use blogspots to find music and try them before buying, if we like them, we buy them. But sometimes we run into other albums we've never even heard about and liked, so we buy those too.

People are all up in arms about piracy, but I think it helps the music industry more then it hurts it, because the average person who downloads will also buy the album, or at least another album they've found.

I can not claim to be an expert, but I find this to be a REAL bold statement.

Maybe it does not "affect" the superstars who have so much money they can't even count it, but I can not imagine the bulk of them are totally not affected...

I know they make a great deal of their money during life shows.

Piracy is not a "good" thing per-say. But, Eminem wouldn't make money off you buying his record. David Draiman (lead singer for Disturbed) was once interviewed about piracy and responded that he fully supported Napster(which was p2p) because it got people listening to their music and they don't make a dime off the record companies anyways. So, me, I'll always buy the album just to show support. You do help by boosting their numbers, even if they aren't directly profiting.

I saw this image on another forum, and it really upset me. Piracy is theft. You can rationalize it all you want, but at the end of the day most artists make content for the purpose of selling it and making money. If you take that content without paying them, you are stealing money from them. End of story.

Ya I read something similar here from an interview with Lady Gaga: + Show Spoiler +

She pretty much says artists can easily make 40 million to 100 million dollars by doing tours/concerts.

It is a problem of IP versus physical items. I don't think the picture says that piracy is good or not depriving the artists etc. of money but it is stating that due to the nature of the "product" (digital/IP) it should be handled a bit differently and this referred to as piracy, not as theft. However, the result is the same - loss of income/not generated income. Anyway, any further discussion will probably derail the thread so back on topic!

I like the new album. I listened to it and have to say it is much better than Relapse. You can see the influence of the drugs on Em's creative performance for sure, so I am glad that he is back to "normal" again.

Imo piracy is good for any artist, and its even better for new bands rather than ones that already have millions. I download tons of music, some of which id never heard of before. If i find I like the music alot, Id definitely support the artist by going to a live show when they come to my city, and possibly getting other merchandise like t-shirts and shit as well. If this didnt happen, I would probably only buy CDs that I knew were good, and wouldnt want to waste my money on shit that might suck. Then when all the bands whos music ive never heard before but could be awesome come to my city to play, I wouldnt go because Ive never even heard their music and again dont want to waste money on something that I might not like. Bands that are new or dont get on tv/radio need stuff like this to get their name out.

Downloading albums hurt record companies that publish the albums. In this case Eminem already has a record deal, he makes the money regardless. And I really don't care if I pirate $14 worth of music from someone who lives here.
