A friend of mine linked this video to me earlier today. I got to agree with this guy. More things should be given for free .

Companies that encourages personal creative thinking are the best.

There is a lot of really great research that comes to this same conclusion, its incredible that so few places try to create an environment that takes advantage of it

Isn't Google practicing exactly that? Stuff like Orkut and other cool things Google is providing came out of those "do what you want" sessions.

It's a very interesting concept, I hope more companies jump onto this!

100% agree with what this guy has to say. I very much fit the description of the kind of person he's talking about. I have a lot of hobbies, and nobody really understands why I do all of these things.

I've played guitar for 2 years, studied 13 foreign languages for 2-15 years depending on which one you're talking about, I'm into BW and SC2 and TF2 and eSports, I'm into programming — I've made all sorts of cool shit for my computer... even remade an old Telery.net game in C# — I've made BW and SC2 maps, one of which was the #2 most popular for the first 5 days of beta... I even majored in my worst subject in college! (I graduated last week, too...)
Fuck you, I have a degree in mathematics and I speak 12 languages. (I called the World Cup final in 2008 btw)

I was with him until the end. When he started describing wikipedia and linux, that was cool. Known examples of good products created by a group of skilled individuals with little pay, good stuff.. However, when he starts talking about a company with a greater purpose, and how that's what everyone wants - he misses the point completely.

What wikipedia/apache/Linux and the Australian-company example have in common is that it's social. Other people are involved giving a frame of reference for the work thats being done. Together they have a history and together they have a vision, right there, at the office or at the forum. People working together, making sure everyone is giving their input and ideas. In a way they are moving forward together, but at the same time they are moving forward individually. Just like like how a braid or a tapestry is made. If I had the choice of investing my whole self into a project like this, that would be more attractive then going up the career ladder for more money so that the boss is satisfied.

I don't think a lot of people get motivated by apple's or facebook's greater vision. Even if a company has a noble vision, that doesn't translate into a positive workplace environment. It sounds more like creating a conformity in order to maximize profit then giving people motivation for work.

I loved the art too, good for keeping focus.

Also, look around people. TL is driven by this. And I'm tuning into day[9] right now.

I saw a video and/or read about this a while back. The drawings are pretty cool though.
this was a TED talk wasn't it? Pretty sure the guy was an employee of google.

Blizzard should watch this imo.

..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

lol moreso i thought of wow.. Or any time anyone counters an argument regarding quality with "Oh but you're gonna buy it and it has made or going to make lots of money therefore its the best".

Kinda came to this conclusion before, but im curious what the "comfortable amount"of money is.

I hope companies really start to do something with their old-school motivational programs.
