We let you down in the past. Twice in recent history (first this, and then this thread). But the Ottawa Starcraft Association lives on!

Nerds will now gather in the Ottawa region for the very first Ottawa-wide Starcraft 2 LAN. Book time off of work or call in sick, finish your assignments the day before or just don‘t do them, don’t get too drunk on the Friday night before, forget about a family member’s birthday, do whatever you need to do, but make it to this LAN.

The location will be the iPlay in Kanata. Their website is found here. The date will be Saturday November 27, 2010. It will run from 11 am until midnight. We have received a deal from them as well, the entire day will cost $25 each plus tax.

We will definitely be playing some BW as well, so if you’re not into the whole SC2 thing, you’ll find players (such as myself) who are itching to play without all this auto-mining, infinite unit and building selecting, smart casting bullshit.

There will be an Ottawa Starleague sanctioned tournament to determine who the best players in the Ottawa area are. There will be prizes (what they will be is still to be determined). More importantly - it's going to be a fucking blast!

Just remember - on the 27th, nerds will gather. And this time, we won't let you down.

Does iPlay have good computers? Can they run SC2 on ultra?

Their website shows pictures of their computers using old CRT monitors rather than LCDs and I'm concerned. I wouldn't pay to go there if my home computer performs better.

iPlay has good computers, but I'm not 100% sure if they can run SC2 on ultra. I've sent them an email and asked about it. I'll post whatever I get as a reply.

However, why would you want to play on Ultra? I've put my settings down to the minimum because if I don't, everything blends together too well, and it makes micromanagement so much more difficult..... Sure, for observing games, having it on a higher setting is nice to look at, but when playing, I can't stand it.....

Also, you don't simply go to a LAN to just sit behind a computer for the full ~12 hours and play Starcraft 2..... There's so much more to it.

When you go to a LAN, you have the ability to look at your opponent and smirk after you're banshee gets in his base and starts killing off his unprotected workers, and online play can never replicate that. Also, the anticipation and adrenaline rush of playing a tournament game against a player you can physically see is so much more intense than if you were in some online tournament. You can end up talking face-to-face with other players about strategies and tactics that you've never even thought of, or build orders that you will never find online. And so much more. There is so much you miss out without the social interaction that can only be provided by a LAN.....

Am I allowed to participate in the SC2 Tourney even if I never played it before? I will feel bad for winning the whole thing against people who have had so many months of practice. Also, if there is an SC:BW tourney, then I will be a dual title holder, I guess there is someone as great as Flash after all.
I don't need luck, luck is for noobs, good luck to you though

Can you post details about the format, how you will do the matchups, map selection, initial seeding, how many people you expect, etc.

Is there a registration page, or do you show up and pay on that day.

What are we allowed to bring. Headset / keyboard / mouse.

The maps will be from Blizzard's map pool (I'll decide what order they're played in), but if you and your opponent can agree on a different map, then I'd allow it (to an extent, nobody's gonna be playing "run ling run" in their game, if you know what I mean).

I'm not 100% sure about the format, but I don't like having a bunch of "best of 1's" until the higher rounds (because of how easy it is to get a lucky win against a better player in a single game), however, faster initial rounds will allow time for the later rounds to become best of 3 or 5, or even 7, so I'd like to start the matches off with either a pro-league setup (top 2 out of every 4 advance in the initial rounds, or I might do some kind of variant on that depending on the situation), or do it double-elimination best of 1 for the first chunk of the tourney, or even double elimination for the entire tourney (I haven't decided which way I want to do it yet) to ensure that we have time for the higher rounds to take longer.

The maps will be from Blizzard's map pool (I'll decide what order they're played in), but if you and your opponent can agree on a different map, then I'd allow it (to an extent, nobody's gonna be playing "run ling run" in their game, if you know what I mean).

Nobody will be directly seeded into higher rounds, and I'll figure out how the seeding into the higher rounds will work when we get to that point (it'll be based on how much time we have left, and how many people are left). I'll figure out the rest of the details later (it's impossible to design a tournament structure when you don't know how many people will be participating, especially since I'm cexpecting a lot of potential walk-ins). Obviously, I don't want to start the tournament right when we get there, but I'll probably make some cutoff point at 1 pm, and start the matches at 1:30, or something like that. That will give us a couple of hours to go through the initial rounds, and still a good chunk of time to do the later rounds.\

I'm expecting at least 50 to show. I'd like to grab more people, but I'm pretty sure I can grab at least 15 from the U of Ottawa alone (I have around 10 that are very likely to show so far, and I'm trying to get more).

I don't want to have any formal sign-ups for it, because there will possibly be a lot of walk-ins to the event, and I don't want to exclude them. I will, however, have some kind of sigh-up sheet for people to sign if they want to participate in the tournament once they are there.

Definitely bring your headset, keyboard, and mouse if you can. They have stuff there, but your own is definitely more comfortable.

For the map selection what I mean is what are the rules. For example,

Best of 3 it's common to have 1 set map, then the loser of 1st game, (and 2nd game if applicable) chooses the next maps out of a map pool that has been pre determined by the tournament host. This gives people enough time to practice the maps (and in the event new maps are released day before we already have the expectation of not having to get used to it).

If it's single round, the standard map to be used is usually announced so the various races know what to expect ahead of time.

The Blizzard ladder maps are going to be the map pool (since not everyone will know about other maps, like the ICCUP maps, but everyone will know about the ladder maps). Loser picks for any BoX rounds (I thought this was pretty much the standard in any non-major tournament, although I make make an exception for quarter/semi/final rounds and set the order myself). I'll announce the starting map in each round. Just know that you need to practice every matchup on every ladder map, if you're that serious about winning the tournament.

I can't give out a conclusive map order for the entire tournament, because I would need to set a cap on how many people can participate to do that, and end up having to turn people away if more show, or end up using a lot of byes if I've planned for more people showing up, and I don't want to do that, so I'm going to be doing this pretty much on the fly (I have a plan for it, but I'm expecting to have to make adjustments during the tournament, especially in the earlier stages).

I'm already expecting that it will take quite a bit of time to organize, and I won't be participating in the tournament myself to make sure this goes as smooth as possible.

Hey, this is a great idea guys. I am new to this forum but the idea of a tournament in Ottawa is really appealing. I will definitely be there if I can find time in school and maybe drag along some nooby friends.

Kennigit has the power to make that happen, but I really doubt he would..... The tournament section is not meant for this type of thing.....
