Hey folks!

Last night in the small hours of the morning, I was lucky enough to win a beta key in the giveaway! <3 Teamliquid.
Now I'd rather not have to whore off my flatmates computer all the damn time when I want to play. So I'm going to bump forward my plans to get a new computer. I was going to get one anyway before release day, but a beta key is a beta key, it is my duty to bump forward my plans and get on to that shit right away.

I've already decided I want to build my own. I've never done this before, but hopefully I'll be OK. I've done a lot of research in the past few weeks, and if the worst comes to the worst I can press-gang one of my tech-savvy friends in to rescuing me.

Just wanna run this build by you guys. Do feel free to shout if there's anything here that makes you wince or generally cry out in terror. My main issue is obviously if all the parts are compatible with each other, and whether I'm missing something important. This is my first time, better safe then sorry.

Just to give you an idea what I'm aiming for, I want a pretty high end gaming computer. Obviously SC2 is the priority here, but I want it to be capable of running all current games, hopefully for a while.

Anyway, here it is:
+ Show Spoiler +
CPU - Intel Core i7 860 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/172754
Motherboard - ASUS P7P55D iP55 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173451
Graphics - XFX HD 5850 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/200576
RAM - OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173107
Hard drive - Western Digital Caviar black 640gb - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150247
Case - Antec 300 Three Hundred Case - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/143854
Optical drive - Samsung SH-S223 22X DVD±RW/RAM/DL - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/145450
CPU cooler - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro rev 2 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176157
Case fans - 3 * Xilence Black 120mm Case Fan - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/151390
Wireless card - Linksys by Cisco Wireless-N Dual-Band PCI Adapter - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166269
Monitor - LG W2361V 23" LCD Widescreen Full HD Gaming monitor 1920x1080 300cd/m2 50,000:1 2ms - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/165288

Obviously I'm missing a power supply here. What will I need for this to run? I did ask this in FragKrag's thread a few weeks back but I can't find the post anymore :/

Another thing, the case fans.
• 2 front (not included) 120 mm fans to cool the hard drives
• 1 side (not included) 120 x 25 mm Fan to cool graphic cards

From the case specs, the fans I picked out are OK right?

Everything look OK? All compatible? Missing anything? Got any tips on when I get round to putting it together?

Thanks everyone!

PS - Is there any reason why there's not the option to preview your post first when creating a blog like you can with regular forum posts? Tis a little annoying ¬¬

The corsair 650 hx would work great for you, it will give plenty of room for potential crossfire/accessories in the future.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2848/13

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139012&cm_re=corsair_power_supply-_-17-139-012-_-Product

EDIT: As far as case fans go, Noctua are the best but expensive.
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/185137

You probably won't need any extra fans, as the 5850 is pretty low power, and the arctic freezer will keep that i7 cool as well. Unless you plan on overclocking, or playing games in a hot room.

About £1100. Bearing in mind that includes everything. Monitor, operating system, keyboard/mouse etc, the works. I only have this shitty laptop atm. Plus prices are generally higher here for computer parts then for America.

So 650 is enough for all that? I expected I'd need more. I went in to a computer shop earlier and he was saying like 800-1000w :s
He was saying some things that even I realised were wrong though, so I guess he just didn't know what he was talking about.

Yep, computer shop people usually get paid commission so of course you needed a big psu lol ;P

Here is a 5850 in crossfire with a core i7 920 peaking at 550 watts load.

EDIT: forgot my link ><

650 should be fine...

no way should you go 800+, thats straight up retard.

build looks good, similar to my comp I bought 2yrs ago but with an i7...Antec 300 is a great case.

Check Newegg for prices, its always been by far the cheapest for me.

So what's the difference between the Corsair TX and HX 650watt psu?

How about this one, would this be good also? http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159920

antec also makes very good power supplies, i'd be comfortable buying either
then again I also feel comfortable buying ocz so clearly i don't worry that much about quality, more about price =p

TX is non modular, not 80+ bronze (only 80+), and loses a 6 pin PCIe and an 8 pin PCIe. Not a big loss if you don't plan on doing Crossfire/SLi.

You would only need a 550ish W for that setup, and a good 650W PSU (like the 650HX) will power two 5850s in Crossfire :p

I think I'm going to splurge on a Sea Sonic X650 :>
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088&Tpk=sea sonic x650
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/190150

though at that cost, you'd be better off with something like the 750HX.

Edit: As for your case, I don't think the Antec 300 has too much room to hide cables, so I would definitely go for a modular PSU like the HX.

BTW, the side fan slot may be better left unoccupied. Cold air will be coming in from the bottom front of your case and be pulled out via the fans on top and top back. The side fan can create a crosswind blowing hot air around inside your case. Probably not much of a problem with your parts (more of an issue if you Crossfire/SLI) but, by the same token, the parts you have don't need whatever extra cooling that side fan might provide. I'd leave it off.

Antec does make nice power supplies, but Corsair tends to have better ones, and the HX line are damn nice modular PSUs. 550 should run your stuff fine, but the 650 should let you Crossfire that 5850 later if you need more power.

Like the build. Later on it'll probably be worth the expense to add in an SSD, but if you don't really have a desire for one you may be just fine waiting until Intel releases their new SSD's later this year. They'll be going with new Flash technology, meaning cheaper and larger drives (assuming their statements can be believed on the cost).

Thank you everyone! I've placed the order! \o/ You're all a bunch of heroes, where would I be without you <3
I decided to go for the Corsair 650 HX, but in all the excitement I must have let the beta key get to my head as I accidentally ordered the TX model instead ¬¬ I've emailed them to ask if I can change so hopefully that's still possible.
Now let's hope I don't break anything when putting it all together!

Yeah I did look in to that originally. But for me the price is still too high to justify it. In the future when hopefully prices have dropped I'll definitely consider it.

I'm gonna bump this, got a few questions now that the parts have arrived.

I've got everything in the case, but now I've gotta plug it all in to the mortherboard, which I'm finding the hardest. Unfortunately my friend who's good at this type of shit is away -_-

The sata cables that came with the power supply each have like 3 sata plugs, does that mean i can use the one cable to power the optical drive and the hard drive? Or does each one need it's own dedicated sata from the psu. If so, why's there 3 plugs on each one? Even if I can use the 1 cable it'll be hard as all the plugs are at weird angles. ¬¬

Also, the case fans. I thought they're meant to be plugged in to the motherboard? The only cables coming from the fans are those molex things. But the motherboard has ports for fans to be plugged in to. How do I go about that?

Hope these questions make sense, I realise they may seem dumb to some of you, but hey we've all gotta start somewhere. And I'm extra cautious when it's stuff worth this much,

You probably will need to buy adapters
for example
http://www.logicsupply.com/products/pwr_mf
Not that I'm recommending that one, it's just the first hit on google image search
You'll need either 3 or 4 pin ones, depending on which your fans are

You can use the SATA cables to power up to 3 drives, so that's 3 hard drives, a dvd drive and 2 hd's, or as few as 1 drive. If you can't reach the drives with 1 cable, then you can also use two cables. it just gets a bit messier

Than you KOFgokuon.
With the fans, they don't *need* to be plugged in to the motherboard right? I mean, it would still be enough just to have them plugged in to the psu? I currently have the fan at the back and top that came with the case. And I installed 2 at the front. Surely that's enough?

I'm sure that's fine
when you get it all running check your temps, if it's running too hot then add more
FWIW I only have 3 fans in mine
