The Overlord’s Tale
After a beautiful EMP, the Science Vessel exhausted all of his energy. The commander ordered him to temporarily fall back.
The Vessel retreated and hid in an empty corner of the map. It was a peaceful valley, with no resources and no tactical important. A good spot to re-adjust and rest a bit.
Suddenly, a giant, flea-like creature, with long, draping tentacles, slowly hovered towards the Science Vessel.
“Who’s there?!” The Science Vessel immediately rose to full attention. He was apprehensive, and due to his lack of energy, he had no way to defend himself. He pared to run away.
“Relax, relax! I’m just like you – I have no attacking powers. I’m just a mere detector!” Even though his face was quite…ugly, the voice of the “flea” had a mesmerizing power. It was deep and full throated, and sounded very honest. Quite at odds with his evil-looking exterior. The Science Vessel let his guard down, but only a little.
“What do you mean just like me? One look at you and I can tell you’re with the Zerg. There was a whole swarm of you above the Zerg hatchery earlier. I didn’t get a chance to ask Observer-hyung what you are though…” The Science Vessel’s curiosity began to blossom. Besides, he reasoned, he can always run away if something happened.
“Oh, you don’t know me? Well, next time you see Observer, you can ask him – I am indeed just like you guys. As for all this talk about enemies and Zergs, well, we’re just all following orders, no? I’m just a scout. We’re all intellectuals here, no need to resort to violence like everybody else. Here, I’ll introduce myself. I’m an Overlord. And I know you’re the powerful and famous Science Vessel. You strike fear into the hearts of our troops to be honest.” The Overlord drawled on, seemingly very relaxed, and his ugly face seem to show the beginnings of a smile.
“Hmm, you do know what you’re talking about. But I’m still kind of suspicious…why do you need that many detectors? There was a whole swarm of you guys! You Zergs always swarm like locusts, and if you can’t even attack, don’t you take up supply count?” though putting on a façade of wariness, the Science Vessel is secretly quite pleased with the knowledge that he’s infamous among the enemy troops. The affirmation gave him a sense of pride that he rarely felt.
“You’re right, too right. That’s actually the reason I’m here,” the Overlord started bitterly. “To be honest, I’m not just a detector, I’m also a transporter. You Terran and Protoss units, whether you be detectors or transporters, have it easy. You guys are few and valuable, unlike us – you saw it yourself, we’re slow and abundant. No matter the mission, we often go out in control groups with only a couple survivors. Corsairs even view hunting us as a hobby. Our life is not easy.” The Overlord’s expression is becoming more and more tragic. “We don’t take up any supply – in fact we provide it. But because the front lines are erupting in giant engagements, there’s little need for transporting or that much supply. In fact, the commander…the commander has decided…that..we’re all going to be fed to the Defilers!” the Overlord broke down in tears.
“What?? This…this is too cruel, isn’t it?” this is the first time that the Science Vessel has heard of this kind of inhumane situation. Sympathy began to swell up. Even though he’s the enemy, but after all, if you have no attacking powers, you might as well be a civilian. He had seen Defilers eat Zerglings, and already wanted to threw up. But to think that there’s even larger-scale massacres going on, he began to feel the savageness of the Zerg.
“So,” the Overlord continued, “I’m just a deserter. Please, I beg you, please don’t tell my troops, please? When I said I was just like you, I was insulting you – how can I be worthy to be called you equal? Right now, all I want to do is find a peaceful, abandoned area and retire.”
“Man, how tragic. How about this? One of my allies has a technique that can convert enemy units to allied units. I can put in a good word for you – if you join the Protoss, I’m sure they’ll find some good use for you. You can transport and detect after all! But, um, you do move pretty slowly…I have a question…if you, when scouting, see enemy forces, what can you do about it with your slow movement speed? How do you follow them?” The Science Vessel had suppressed this question out of politeness, but he just couldn’t resist. Even though he’s quite sympathetic with the Overlord’s plight, he can’t help but feel how superior he was in comparison.
“Oh, if that happens, well, then I will activate my third ability. In the Zerg forces, this is one of my specialties.” The Overlord wiped his tears, and showed a relaxed expression.
“Wow, you can do even more? What is it?” The Science Vessel is even more curious now.
“My specialty is…chatting!” The Overlord laughed as he finished saying that.
Two Scourge appeared from the surrounding darkness, and using the vision of the Overlord, shot straight at the Science Vessel.
11’20”, the death of a Vessel.
