Day 12 now, and I think it's about time that I refine a tiny bit what I hope to do with these blogs. Basically, I want to give you good albums to listen to. Not necessarily the best (although if you think it's the best then go me!), but just something that you can put on and know that you will enjoy. Also, there's no point in listing albums you already listen to, so I'll try to either introduce you to new music, or to remind you of old music that you should listen to again. Hopefully I've been successful so far!

1. Moby - Play
What? Electronic
When? 1999
Why? A rock-inspired electronic album. There are so many good sounds on this album, it's unbelievable.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

2. The Smiths - The Smiths
What? Classic alt rock
When? 1984
Why? If Moby was strange for 1999, then this was absurd for 1984. Uplifting and eerie at the same time.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

3. Jedi Mind Tricks - Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell
What? Hip Hop
When? 2006
Why? Jedi Mind Tricks make some of the most thoughtful badass hip hop. Not many artists do that well these days.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

4. The Drones - Gala Mill
What? Sludge rock
When? 2006
Why? Like a tone-deaf Leonard Cohen on steroids with a constant, pissed-off drone in the background. It's amazing.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

5. Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance
What? Symphonic metal
When? 1999
Why? This is how symphonic metal should be done. Perfect growls, perfect female vocals, perfect music.
Show me! + Show Spoiler +

Let me know what you think of my choices for the day! It's a nice mix between contemporary and underground I think. Also, just to add to the message at the start, I am not a popular music fascist or anything. If the music's interesting firstly, and enjoyable secondly, then I'll listen to it. Unfortunately, most popular music falls outside of the first requirement. However, if I do decide to put a Kid Cudi mixtape up at some point (for example) then I don't want to be stoned because Kid Cudi is mainstream. Give it a listen, and if you don't like it, tell me why! Anyway, enough rambling.

Disclaimer: The title says that it is Daigomi's guide to good listening. That means its my opinion. Feel free to disagree as long as you provide reasons; I enjoy a good discussion as much as the next person. Also, I just like listening to music, I don't give a shit for the political implications of any music.

Day 4 - Eti307 - Wale sampling Yann Tiersen
Day 8 - - Name a song that samples Rodriguez's Sugar Man.
Day 9 - - Which arcade game's music is sampled in Percee P's 2 Brothers From The Gutter?

Play is one of my favorite albums ever, great pick. I'll check out the rest…The Smiths have been recommended to me many times but I find them hard to get into.

Based on your taste I am going to recommend you two bands:
1) Memoryhouse
2) Voxtrot

Holy shit, this The Drones track is so intense. Sick video clip too. I hope the rest of their music is just as good. Thanks for that.

Haha, these days I'm trying to figure out which albums people will mention as one of their favourites, and which albums I'll get into trouble for putting up. I expected to get into trouble for Play :p

The Smiths are a bit difficult to get into, because their music is so period specific. It's not like Led Zep that kicks as much ass now as it did in 1969. I don't really know how to explain what makes them awesome though. Like, the sound wasn't entirely unheard of at the time, you had Adam Ant making glam rock, groups like The Human League, having the relaxed vocal delivery. But what makes The Smiths so awesome is how they did all these things, but so much better than required. Like, if you listen to the guitar on This Charming man, it is really quite awesome. Added to this, they have this spooky but uplifting sound to them that few other bands have managed to capture. In the end though, either you get them or you don't :p

I love Voxtror, but I've never heard of memoryhouse. Any particular albums I should get?

I think that whole album is that good. The album does what all good sludge or doom does though, and kind of melds into one experience rather than specific tracks. I really love it!
