(browser closed while typing, 2nd attempt to write blog)
I went on piratebay and randomly got a virus called "av.exe". It downloads itself without warning and starts spamming some messages about downloading and purchasing some phony antivirus software. Obviously it's fake, but it fucks with your computer, keeps bringing up pop-ups, and you can't open up any browsers.
So I spent a whole day trying to dl other antivirus stuff to get rid of it. I already had McAfee and Ad-Aware, maybe the McAfee got turned off somehow or it just sucks. Anyways, I think that it's gone but I'm not sure because I didn't see it deleted. This is just a vent blog.
Does anyone else have experiences with computer viruses?
avast anti virus is free and you can just register for free all they want is customer info, but you just get the license key that they email to you and you can use it after the 30 day trial. just google avast anti virus and it should be there, it works wonders and catches a lot of trojans lately.

I downloaded them both and ran the malwarebytes, when I ran the spybot it crashed twice midway or something, I don't know why. My computer really sucks.

I got it from visiting the site. I think I got rid of it, and no I didn't have to resort to safe mode b/c i stopped the av.exe from windows task manager and googled how to get rid of it from there.

If AV didn't work, than most AV's wouldn't have SCAN then FIX buttons.
intrudor's mostly right. AVs are far more effective at prevention than they are at removing viruses. But they're only good at prevention when they're up-to-date and only against older (usually 2+ days old) viruses.
If you have a virus on a sensitive computer, or just a really annoying one, it's time to nuke it from orbit wipe the drive, it's the only way to be sure.
Also, keep your browser updated and not IE. AFAIK Korea is the only retarded country that insists on adding ActiveX to every goddamn site, which will throw hissy fits and break if you don't install arbitrary code.

No, you're wrong.
Certain anti-virus programs are good at prevention, but there are certainly ones great at removing mal-ware. I think its absolutely disgusting that you (and so many other people) tell others to resort to reformatting and losing their data; thats ridiculous.
Mal-ware Bytes updates multiple times a day, and is one of the best removal programs out there. Also their support is extremely helpful and answers questions for free with care.
Just post on their site or whatever if what I suggests doesn't help, make sure you boot in safemode with networking.
Also, no, introudor isn't right, he said its for prevention, NOT removal, which is a down right lie.

Telling someone to reformat when its more than likely an extremely easy virus to get rid of isn't just stupid, its cruel.
