basic maintenance should be the same for all cars. i'm not so sure you want to be redlining your car everyday though, that sounds like a terrible idea.
you'll find out a lot more when you buy the car and read the manual. or you can try to look it up online or something.

Checked the RX-8 Club forums and most people seem to agree that it prevents build up of carbon in the engine/intake system, although it does say "you don't have to do it everyday, but it's good and healthy for the car".
Been reading up on whatever I can to help me understand over at www.rx8club.com (thanks ETT) and getting lessons on manual driving in the summer from my dads friend, where I'll obviously ask him a crap load of questions

mahnini, I believe the redlining is specific to the rotary engine. I think it's also good to redline conventional engines every once in a while (not necessarily every day) because of some buildup in your engine.

as long as you dont drive like a granny and give it a little gas every once and a while on a freeway on ramp carbon buildup should not be a major issue though i dont know if the rx8 has any specific problems with it. redlining your car everyday is a sure way to increase wear and tear for no reason.

Nope, no granny driving here The car does not appear to have a "specific" issue with it though, so I guess everyday may be too much, but once in a while would be good.

rx-8 is a great car. Almost as good as topgear is, haha.
I whole heartedly recommend it, the rotary engine may take a bit to get used to, but its really a blast

I was almost going to get one myself if not for the RX-7. Mazda's in general require a little more maintenance but if you're cool with that then the RX-8 is actually an excellent car. I am highly biased towards Wankel's though. :D

On your car dashboard it'll show you the RPM. It will go up in intervals and then near the end you'll see a thick redline. Redline'ing means making your RPM go up to that red line.

i dont know anything about cars, but i have some friends that are crazy over cars. they tell me that rotary engines are somewhat unreliable and consume more more fuel than normal engines, but anyways the rx8 looks like a cool car so lucky u =D

Check that link for the official RX-8 Manual I guess? Page 325-327 gives the maintenance schedule as per manufacturer.
I see a few around campus here at school owned by students - and they seem to be well maintained. Looks like a nice, aesthetically clean, sports car, and 232 hp from a 1.3 L engine - I'd buy one just for the novelty of having a wankel rotary lol.
I think I've spent like $3,000 on my car last year, and that's on a car that's supposed to be a money pit - so you could take that as an upper bound on yearly expense I guess.

It does say things like 5000 km replace, but I would rather be extra careful and do it at 4500 km but yeah pretty much what I thought seems to be what they wrote on the manual.
I totalled it down to ...
Financing - $815/month (For 48 months)
Insurance - $170/month (Insurance company told me they would be lowering it within a year for students most likely)
Gas - $180/month (For 3 fill ups of premium)
Everything Else - $20/month (This includes oil changes, air filters, etc most of which I would do myself so I just need to buy the actual thing)
In total $1200/month for keeping this car for the next 4 years, which I should be able to handle ... maybe I'll get in in less than a year
