Caught using Bittorrent in school

I have no idea how schools know if you use bittorrent unless they actually look into it. God knows how many people use bittorrent in school and no one cares, but my gf got her internet locked because the school found "illegal" files on her computer. And truth to be told, she doesn't even use bittorrent that often, she used it for like 2 things she really needed and that was months ago, and she hasn't had anything illegal on her computer in months. So unless someone report on her, how can the school know?

has anyone had experience with this? I know another friend of mine at my school was using limewire, and got an email warning and that was it.

well those things are considered illegal even if you download 1 mp3 file or 1,000. it's still illegal to them

pretty sure this would only even matter if it was a college dorm

my advice is to tell her to tell them that she was unaware of illegal activity and perhaps someone else has accessed her computer, blah blah. EVERYONE has illegal shit on their comp in one shape or form (the way laws are now it's retarded, internet laws are in a state of flux and decision right now and probably won't be the same in 5-10 years)

the way they can know, is that companies flag certain names of things and then the ISP/wifi controllers just scan through everything thats comes in and goes out. Usually its brand new shit that MPAA or RIAA thinks they are losing money on the initial release of.
So stay away from new and popular stuff. (i got a letter from charter isp when moon 2009 was DL/UL'd and it was when the movie was brand spanking new on DVD)
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

i know and the weird thing is like they somehow was able to find the exact file she had downloaded. which was like 3 months ago. and she got rid of it long time ago too. she hasn't downloaded anything since, her computer has been restored while ago also.

it makes mad that they picked her of all people. I mean, they can't monitor these things, so they have to selective check people's download history right? I can't imagine they actually have a record of all the illegal download because then half of the college students would not have internet.

just get a ip proxy and they won't be able to track you down. I know michigan does the same tihng, but my friend torrented stuff all the time using that trick without getting once caught.

My neighbour used to work for the RCMP and he used Kazaa/Limewire/etc for illegal stuff lol

I think it's BS that the school even gives a crap. It's not like anything is going to happen to them...

My high school had it's own computer genius who rigged every computer, it would run daily scans and report unknown files to him, he also had every computer rigged to ghost everything daily if it wasnt saved to your account, and btw the accounts are all open to staff, I had to do digging to figure this out, the comps wouldnt even accept flash drives, althought I bypassed many of these xD and had starcraft illegally downloaded on the comp permanently, and I had I available to every computer

If you're concerned with using bittorrent, then you can directly download (ddl) to be safe.

Don't bittorrent on college connections. It's as simple as that. Unless you have a seedbox it's almost impossible to do it without them knowing. Best thing to do is to live offcampus if you wanna do that stuff.

So they are checking the Tracker to see what she is connecting to.

Bit Torrent is a bad way to go as far as stealing shit. I think everyone got spoiled that we were able to get away with it for so long. Look into Rapidshare/Megaupload communities to get what you need.

Oh btw don't say "absolutely needed," because unless it was the software for her dialysis machine there is an open source program that is better than what she wanted.

Maybe she really needed to play Mass Effect.

My school actually logs every single website you've been to. They know which website you've accessed, when you've accessed it, and how much data was transferred. Good luck doing any meaningful downloading if your school has a similar policy.
