I saw a big dumb huge thread about this that is now locked and I couldn't respond. God that keeps happening lately.

Anyways, fwiw:

Imagine if Idra was still in Korea but he totally sucked (like artosis level maybe a little better).

Would anyone be saying "no he shouldn't be allowed to play!!"

No, they wouldn't.

Don't be jealous children

No. Koreans are genetically superior to the rest of the world in every way. Being in korea, as well, instantaneously increases your skill level.

I don't think it has anything to do with how good he's playing, it's more of a does he have an extreme advantage the other players in foreign tournaments. To which many people would argue yes.

Idra succeeded the moment he stepped onto Korean soil.

And "succeeding" is not only a very ambiguous word, but also one I never use in serious context or think about ever.

I don't think I've ever wished my opponent good luck prior to a game. When I play, I play to win. I hope every opponent I ever have is cursed with fucking terrible luck. I hope they're stuck playing underneath a stepladder with a black cat in attendance a

I mean you guys realize all the progamers of old and such all had elite little circles of practice partners back before teams were really anything other than sponsoring people to wear space suits.

Little E-gangs ensuring ongoing domination for the people already at the top of the ladder.

Funny rek, but to get somewhat serious...

"We simply did not want to stop someone from moving to Korea to pursue his dream of becoming a professional StarCraft player."

This is the main justification behind letting Idra and a few others participate.... and even rewriting the eligibility rules to ensure it is permissible. This, coupled with offering to reward foreigners for long-term service to the foreigner community is the only reason given by TSL staff from what I've seen for why they are eligible.

Supposing SC2 doesn't come out for a long time (not so far fetched lol) and the bw community continues to evolve, what we might find is more and more foreigners going to Korea and training like Idra and one or two others have done recently (granted it probably won't get better but bear with me). Eventually the level of 'foreigner' play eligible according to the current rules will be too high for anyone who doesn't go to train in Korea to compete with (imagine a tsl ladder with 100 Idras). Thus, this seems like an unsustainable system at its core for accomplishing the ultimate goals of the TSL. However, I don't anticipate this actually happening or there being many TSLs prior to sc2 so it isn't a big deal. Still, it is not a ridiculous argument to make that certain people shouldn't be allowed to participate (even if I want them to for personal reasons).

edit: ninja quote: "fundamental point that pokerstrategy is sponsoring TSL for it to be a popular and fun event" I disagree.

Everyone saying he can't play just misses the fundamental point that pokerstrategy is sponsoring TSL for it to be a popular and fun event. Hate him or love him, the only white player left in korea playing in that tournament makes it more fun, especially a controversial shit talker like Idra. Instead of being little jealous idiots not wanting to see Harry Potter build his Hogwarts bankroll you should just support the tournament.

And to those making the point that 'its racist to not let koreans play because ur letting idra play and he's in their same situation!' you are idiots too. Koreans polluting this tournament will not make it fun for the foreign audience. We already have the Korean leagues obviously.

And the whole Ret ordeal has shown us Koreans are atleast a little bit racist, so fuck them anyways

For me what is wrong is twofold. One, I think that it takes courage to speak out and should be fostered by society. Two, if you disagree please do so respectfully and do not fall back on prejudicial reasoning to justify your position.

I totally agree with you and as I know you know...thats just not the case right now. But yeah it's not far fetched at all to take certain things into consideration in the future if certain players could ruin the suspense and fun of a tournament. (But then again, if prizes are so big and events are so big we should look to the other foreign players to rise to the occasion and get better rather than focus on removing people who are too good...and well if the foreign players can't then thats just sad and don't know why ppl would throw so much money into events.)

But right now? With Idra? Please ppl. He's still B-team, he hasn't qualified in any korean leagues yet. Maybe he is the favorite, but he is totally beatable by foreigners.

And actually I truly believe the reason why IdrA has gone higher than the curve of foreigners in the past 2 years is not because he's living and playing with koreans, but merely a byproduct of that fact. It's the playing all day every day non stop that played the real role in him improving, rather than him playing those games against the koreans (of course that helps too but not the main factor imo). It's not Idra's fault all the top foreign players these days barely play compared to him. To punish him for slaving away for his 'dream' would be idiotic.

hahahahha.

honestly though, imagine a tournament without idra. he's one of the most exciting foreigners and the one i keep an eye on the most. aside from whether or not it is fair, banning a player should only be considered if it helps the overall foreigner scene and right now, i don't see how it even comes close. excluding idra would definitely hurt the legitimacy of any foreign tournament in my eyes. you see artosis posting these showmatches with korean b teamers to show that the skillgap between korea and the rest of the world is closing. saying idra is too good, or an autowin in any tournament would definitely be a step backwards.

To be honest this is the first TSL I've watched ... and the matches have been a bit eh. I have been generally disappointed by the quality of games.

It's not like IdrA is unbeatable... he loses plenty often. There's no reason to bar him from playing anything. There are plenty of foreigners capable of beating him if they practice hard enough.

I dunno ... with this much hype I expected the lower rounds to be quality matches ... but only a couple of series were any good imo.

i think if TSL 3 will exist! idra should be banned, we all know about his 2years in korea
and we all know foreigners can take 1,2, or maybe 3 games from idra , but when that happens?
1game of 200 imo
so idra is in other lvl of play atm.
