Some of these screen capturing programs allow for simultaneous audio recording as well. However, since that significantly increases the resulting file size, some perfer to just record the screen with it and use Audacity to record their commentary separately.

If you are making a commentary of a VOD, you can record your commentary with Audacity and then merge them with something like Movie Maker. If, however, you are making a commentary of a replay, then you need a screen capturing program. I used CamStudio to record mine and I know Diggity likes to use Growler Guncam. And I'm probably going to do something with my FPVODs, not a replay or anything like that.

While I cannot speak for everyone, at least I personally never managed to record in full screen mode (even when starting to record in-game). The resulting video always ended up being completely dark with some white spots.

EDIT: So for FPVODs I just record my stream then after I'm done I load it up and commentate overtop of it.

However, since that significantly increases the resulting file size, some perfer to just record the screen with it and use Audacity to record their commentary separately. Personally I don't see how anyone can stand over-complicating their work by recording the audio in a separate program when recording a game. It's just so pointless. The file size increase is microscopic at best, especially since you're dealing with video footage you're going to end up recompressing anyway if you're using fraps (which is more reliable than guncam and doesn't desync sound like camtasia has a habit of doing, at least for me), or in the knowledge that there's no way any kind of lossy or lossless sound compression is going to eat that 2gb size limit on youtube for a 10 minute video. Most programs except for fraps compress the audio in some way. Even a 10 hour mp3 is still tiny compared to a 10 hour h264 video. AAC is a much better codec than mp3, though. I absolutely despise Audacity and its terrible memory management, using it to record audio separately from starcraft is really just making your situation more difficult and time consuming. There is simply no reason to record audio separately from an ingame replay or during actual play. You have to sync it up afterwards, you have to deal with crappy interfaces, any kind of lag can screw up framerates or timing and make a mess of things... and you get absolutely nothing out of it. Anyways, since the OP isn't commentating while playing that isn't really an issue. But I've seen a few people mention this kind of thing before and I just can't understand why they would do something so silly. The newer versions of fraps fix the issue some cpus had with them recording software rendering (including all of mine) that lagged the hell out of starcraft. This makes fraps the #1 choice for recording starcraft now. Guncam is otherwise your second best choice, but it didn't work correctly sometimes for me and doesn't work on windows 7. I've always found camtasia to be absolutely awful because it always desynced the sound no matter what computer hardware I was running or what codecs I set it to use, plus it always ended up destroying the video quality. Camstudio and other programs based on Camtasia always gave me the same problems, at least with Starcraft. But fraps does make large videos - mostly unrelated to sound recording, it's because the fraps codec has very loose video compression - so have some free HD space. I have about two and a half terabytes dedicated just to uncompressed video recordings from games. Yesterday I commented a game of Starcraft about 50 minutes in length and that turned into about 27gb. It's easy enough just to tie that together in Virtual Dub or Staxrip and poop out a very small file for internet transfer or to cut it up into pooptube compatible lengths, but I use Vegas to do things like block out replay progress and such first. Typically I record 960x600 videos, sometimes 1920x1200 videos (which is what I'll be doing for sc2 beta), now those eat a lot of space. Guncam has the advantage of making fairly small files - except for the GCF files it stores data in, you'll want free space for those - but it's a little finicky sometimes. Since you already have FPVOD's recorded, all you need to do is record audio and then sync it. Which can be a bit annoying, especially if the audio ends up getting recorded at a different framerate than the video (I suspect this is where camtasia was giving me problems but all attempts to fix it failed). If you can, get Adobe Audition for this task rather than Audacity. Even Goldwave is a superior choice.

I believe day[9] uses livestream's actual procaster software, which works fine when you're not using fullscreen starcraft. I've never used it because of this limitation. Avidemux is also useful for splitting videos and the like.
