Episode 1 is the best!!
Ok, so I really couldn't be more wrong. + Show Spoiler + I am not an uber star wars guy, but hey, movies 4-6 are pretty good and like most of you probably, I was pretty disappointed by 1-3. I was wondering which movie you guys liked the most. If you could show a friend who had never watched a single one of them, which movie would you show them in the hopes of getting them hooked.
Personally I like ep.5 since there aren't any gremlins or strange celebrations, but just gritty emotional action.
Poll: Which Movie was the best? (Vote): Episode 1 The Phantom Menace (Vote): Episode 2 Attack of the Clones (Vote): Episode 3 Revenge of the Sith (Vote): Episode 4 A New Hope (Vote): Episode 5 The Empire Strikes Back (Vote): Episode 6 Return of The Jedi (Vote): They are all equally good. (Vote): They all suck nerd.
Edit: I fucked up searching and am just trying to save this, though doing so poorly...

Didn't i see this thread.. not.. a month ago ? wat

Episode 1 was actually the best of the new ones.
But nothing beats 4-6 of course. Especially 5.
|
crap, hope I didn't do the search for it wrong.

|
Episode 5. Also Jean-Luc Picard ftw.

I need to practice blogging in front of a mirror before trying this again, I'm just terrible.

Empire Strikes Back was fantastic in every way. I watched it when I was pretty young and remember feeling shocked and horribly betrayed when Lando opened his dining room to reveal Darth Vader and Stormtroopers.
Also Luke's Jedi training and Yoda are obviously unforgettable, and the final lightsaber battle between Luke and Vader was so full of emotion. I loved that despite how dark the movie's ending was, it left a glimmer of hope for Luke and the Rebellion.
Oh yeah, over break I watched all of that Phantom Menace review and I thought it was pretty spot on. One of its best points is that lightsaber fights (or any combat in any movie, for that matter) shouldn't be about cool moves or special effects but rather the tension between the characters involved. Most movies these days completely miss that…it's what made the first three Star Wars's fights to great. That scene where Luke just beats the shit out of Vader is fucking awesome.

I completely agree with that last part! With all the CGI I was expecting the fights and such to be just that much cooler and gripping but instead they were just cool, not emotional or anything. Heck in Episode 1 I was kinda rooting for Darth Maul because he had a cooler lightsaber. The character depth and what you are saying kinda go hand in hand too.

Episode 6, because it recalls me the time when I was 9 and could watch ewoks owning stormtrooper over and over, episode 5 was way too dark for me at this time and even if i would prefer episode 5 now it won't be as good as episode 6 in my youth.
|
I agree that episode 5 is the best one, but to actually answer your question, of course if I was showing just one to a person who hadn't seen Star Wars before, it would be episode 4.
|
Personally ive always liked episode 5..
but nothing beats Episode 6's most famous line
ITS A TRAP
|
A friend of mine who is a huge star wars fan, says that ideal order to show someone who has never seen any of them before is 4,5,1,2,3,6. So, to answer your question directly, i'm going to say that episode 4 is the first one you should show a friend.

Oh I just now see your main question: yea of course, you need to show Episode 4 first. It builds up to Episode 5 and 6 and basically creates the Star Wars universe. It's also a good movie. Showing anything else first would be criminal.
It's a pity that Episode 1 was so awful, since it would have been cool to be able to watch them in order (1-6) without thinking "holy shit this series must suck ass" after the first movie.

Empire Strikes Back should be an autowin.

ESB FTW
Episode 4 introduces the universe. Episode 6 ties up the story. Episode 5 really fleshes out the characters and their interactions with one another.

1, 2 and 3 made me fucking despite that prick lucas... i already hated him for the 'hd releases with new stuff (about 30sec)' to make bank, and then he mailed it in with those abysmal movies. if it wasnt for those three original ones, the three modern ones would be average, cliched as shit, cgi fests at best.

My Star Wars ranking: 5> 4 > 6 > 3 > 2 > 1.
I saw that review some time ago, it's fantastic, really funny and truly spot on about the movie.
|
I saw 4-6 when I was a child and I rewatched them recently. The dialogue seemed really cheesy and the action scenes suck compared to the ones from the new movies (obvious technological differences). But Return of the Jedi was the best. Carrie Fischer in a sexy metal bikini? Come on, hands down winner.
|
I goes with the episode 5 too but i love them all .
also for everyone who loved episode 5, go watch the special star wars family guys episode 5 (so hilarious just dont miss that)
they did episode 4 too =)
|
Star Wars in 3D-IMAX please, thats all I ask.
|
Episode 5 hands down.
Anybody else seen Fan Boys?
|
Damn this made me realise how ridiculously long it's been since I watched Star Wars. I would have picked episode 6 as favourite episode, but back when I was a little kid episode 5 was simply too dark for me. That means I havent seen star wars (4-6) in... at least 9 years. It's time to change that.
edit: OK screw that, episode 1 was released in 1999? then it was at least 11 years ago, probably more than that.
|
I'm surprised New Hope is below Jedi.
I always liked that one the best, it introduces everyone and has everything a great adventure film needs, with constant action and set pieces. Also I feel the 3 act system it uses is perfect and doesn't have any down time like the others. And Star Wars movies are just adventure films, so you shouldn't have too much downtime in them, which is why the prequels were shit despite looking amazing.
|
I'm sorry, but I hated episode 5 because it was the most boringest one. Episode 1 for the win.

i still like episode 6 the best, mainly because i love space dogfights, which episode 5 barely had at all
|
WOW, I am so surprised people think episode 5 is the best. I have watch the original trilogy probably 15 times and episode 5 was always my least favourite.
Episode 6 was always my favourite.
If you could show a friend who had never watched a single one of them, which movie would you show them in the hopes of getting them hooked. I see this as a completely different question. If I wanted to introduce someone to the original trilogy I would start with episode 4. It would be silly to start with episode 5 or 6. I would only show someone the new episodes if they already saw the original 3 because I dont think they are of the same level of quality.
edit: I remember why I didnt care for episode 5 as much as the other 2 now. The epic action sequence belongs at the END of a star wars movie.
|
Return of the jedi was my favorite as a kid, and still is.
|
4 is clearly the best. It's leagues ahead of all of the others. My ranking would be 4>5>6>3>1>2.
2 was really really bad. 1 didn't make a lick of sense, but it didn't offend me like 2 did.

nooooo
ep 6 was ruined by Ewoks! Also green lightsaber is just lame compared to the ice cold WHITE /LIGHT BLUE version. Outside of these Battle Of Hoth >> Battle of Endor, I mean AT-ATs are the coolest shit ever, and the whole ep 5 is dark so it's cool.
Imo 5 >= 4 > 6 >>> 3 > 1 > 2
Things to mention: ep 1's : saving grace is Darth Maul but Jar Jar Binks fucks it up. Pod racing is ridiculous. Too much comedy in this episode.
ep 2 : Dooku's saber is cool (arced grip). Yoda's fighting is ridiculous as shit. Wtf. The story is just not too interesting and unrealistic imo.
ep 3 : The love thread is just lame. Actually, most of the story is. There are some good parts though. The actor who plays Anakin just sucks. Cool action scenes, but Grevious is just uncool.

Don't you mean "a long time ago?" :p
I've always liked the sixth the best, although Empire Strikes Back has been growing on me since Hoth is so awesome. I agree that the first and second were pretty bad, but I didn't really mind the third. Even if you didn't enjoy the plot, at least the special effects were decent.
|
omg episode 3 was just absolutely amazing. maybe thats because its the only 1 ive seen in theatres, but idk
|
Oddly, I like six the most. Episode one is the best of 1-3.

I *really* agree with your edit.

I first saw them when I was really young so naturally I preferred the happy one with the teddy bears. All I remember liking about 5 was Lando.
I also preferred episode 3 of the new trilogy because I'm not watching them for character interaction. Most of the scenes with Anakin make me want to vomit. I just watch it for the lightsaber fights and Vader.
|
I'm planning to watch the whole series some time soon. I remember seeing some of it when I was younger but don't remember the movie. My question is:
WHAT ORDER DO I WATCH?
Amazing to shit or shit to amazing?
|
I liked the one with Princess Leia in the gold bikini.

I'd watch them 4-6 then 1-3, but I think 1-6 would make more sense. I didn't really have that option growing up...
|
Episode 6 is the favourite among children I think.
|
For me, 5 > 4 = 6 >>>> prequels
6 might have been up with 5 for me if not for the whole "Ewoks throwing rocks at stormtroopers to save the day" bit. What does that stormtrooper armor even do, anyway? Doesn't protect from blaster shots, or apparently even rocks.
